Sounds good to me. I just hope those suckers
will get me noticed... Thanks for writing, Jeff.
By the way, what's the list consensus (if there
could ever be one) on doing a chem treatment in
conjunction with a coolant change? Necessary?
Not necessary? What's up? Thanks in advance...

How many miles are on your bike? On higher mileage bikes, it might be worth
flushing the radiator with a flush treatment, but otherwise, just flushing
it out with high pressure water will be fine. BTW, you have to fill the
radiator up first, and fully, then the resevoir seperately. After you fill
the radiator and resevoir, run the motor and heat it up. Shut down and let
cool, then check the levels again, so trapped air in the pump and lines gets
burbed out.

go, girl!
all these adventure-seeking, klr-riding women motorcyclists are inspiring
the hell out of me. no kidding.
sarah's right (again 8^)- the bash plate is a GOOD thing.
i'm not familiar with the area, but i've got experience with long-distance
klr'ing and the two greatest additions i made comfort-wise were (Tim's)
highway pegs and a throttle lock. they provide many new seating positions
to alleve "monkey butt". incidentally, both have held up pretty well to my
more recent off-road abuses.
a good set of handguards (sorry guys, i still love the Acerbis rally pros)
protect you from the brush and, in my experience, the bike from hard ground
smacks. of course, in that vein, personal protection (head to toe,
including good boots) really should be mandatory. that includes weather
protection.
if it's real dusty, you might want an extra air filter.

There is also AfterShocks in Palo Alto, CA who rebuilt Beez's shock and
added a remote reservoir. His name is Phil Douglas and his shop # is
650-494-8849. I picked up a rear shock from Elden Carl and will be sending
it to Phil this week.

Azores huh, cool.
Cheapest replacement shock I know of would cost you probably half of what
you paid for your bike-or $250. Elden Carl in Southen California might have
one. Contact me if interested and I'll see if I can find his phone number.

Mind if I use your post for a little list lesson? A pitch for the list
archives. I just did a search on Combat Touring Boots and came up with
45 hits...the archives are an incredible tool for newbies to get up to
speed quickly on just about every KLR subject you can imagine. I love
the social aspect of the list as much as anyone but as a veteran it is
really refreshing when newer listers say, "I just came from a search of
the archives and from what I can gather..." Just a reminder...
My SO and I both have the CTB and like them a lot...they are plenty
comfortable and water resistant...they are made by SIDI...dogs like them
to...Bill Haycock had one stolen by a local pooch in Skip's
driveway...(g)

Hi Heather and welcome. Here is a website for Jeff and Linda who "as we
speak" have finished their Baja swing after a trip down the US west
coast. They're planning to continue down to South America. Jeff's riding
an A13 and Linda a DR650SE...their packing list is on this page...scroll
down to the bottom and it will give you plenty of ideas...also search
the archives on Gino's Tool Kit...
http://www.aracnet.com/~anspach/dress.html
Don't forget the tool kit has no wrench for the front axle nut (22mm)...
Regards,
Kurt

Subject: Re: (klr650) helicoil alternative
Over the years I have repaired threads in almost every German and Japanese
auto ever made. I have inserted spark plug holes in about a bazillion VW
engines (ask me about Champion spark plug threads sometime). I have used
Helicoil products and other brands of thread insert repair products.
Helicoil makes a good product but it is my experience that in areas of
frequent use the coil will back out with the bolt, plug, or stud. I think
Timesert makes a superior product. It is actually a sleeve, not a coil, and
can be loctited in place, never to move again. Wurth sells them.
Here is one of their websites, www.wurthwest.com
Click on products and then on thread repair and you will see what I am
talking about.
This is a wholesale jobber company and I don't know if you can order direct,
if not I am sure they can refer to a local dealer.
By the way these are German products mostly, they are of a very high
quality. The "Rost Off" penetrating lube is unmatched in it's performance.
I am quite sure that if a BMW ever broke this is what the factory would want
it repaired with!
Hey they never break, what was I thinking.

Subject: (klr650) KLR 650- oil in exhaust
Hello listers,
Today I went to take the bike out for a ride.
Checking it over I notice oil coming from my exhaust pipe.
Checked my oil level, it was low.
Added approximately 2/3 of a quart to bring to proper level.
When I started it it smoked.
I had run it the day before on a fairly tame ride and didn't notice
any unusual noises or faulty operation.
I'm fearing the worst, any ideas before I tear this thing apart?
As always, many thanks.

Subject: RE: (klr650) essentials for a baja adventure
Heather,
In addition to Sarah's comments, I would suggest a spare shift lever, an =
extra inner tube, a spare fuse for your headlight, check to see that =
your spokes are consistently taut, get Mexican Insurance & have a great =
time.
I'm also adding a post from another list that you may find helpful =
concerning travel in Baja:
Hello all,
The season for us to take mid winter motorcycle trips to Baja is
drawing close. Whether riding down on a touring or dual sport bike, or
hauling your dirt bike or ATV there, the following may help.
Here is a list of links that could be of use to anyone planning to
travel to Baja, and even some that concern mainland Mexico as well.
Rather than describe each of them, I think people should go through them
and find what they need for their trip.
I want to stress that Mexican vehicle insurance should be considered a
MUST. Without it you are only setting yourself up for real problems
should anything happen. Usually if you are going to be there for more
than 10 days, the Annual insurance is a better deal.=20
Along with that, Emergency Medical Evacuation insurance is available
for only $50/year. In the case of a severe motorcycle accident, this
could mean the difference between life and death. Of course, none of us
will ever have an accident there, will we?
I suggest that people contact Discover Baja, the first link below, for
information on both of the above items. To get insurance through them,
you must join the club ($39/year), which is well worth the convenience
they afford you. You can call before your trip, take care of your
insurance over the phone, tell them what day to activate it, and you are
done! Won't have to stop at the border for it this way.
However, a stop on the Mexican side will be necessary now, as the
Mexican government has instituted a new annual "fee" for traveling in
Baja. If you are caught without it, the fine can be more than you want
to bother with. The last I heard, you have to stop at the "tourist"
office, get a form, go to a bank and pay the $15 dollar fee, go back to
the tourist office to have it validated. There was talk of them
streamlining this so it could all be handled at the tourist office.
Again, Discover Baja can update you on this.

http://Mexico-travel.com/como/como_eng/como001.htm
http://www.mexonline.com/drivemex.htm
http://www.bajaexpo.com/
http://www.mexonline.com/baja/links.htm
I would like to mention that in ANY book on Baja that the traveler
should not take everything as "gospel". In Mexico, things change
constantly. What you have found on a previous trip may not be there now.
Gas is one of these. While the stations have been improved, and gas is
not the problem it used to be, there are exceptions to this. One is the
"station" at Catavina. It may be at the Hotel La Pinta, or it may be
across the street at the "station", or it may not even be available.
Also, any reference to gas available from barrels in remote areas, or
even along Hwy. 1, MAY NOT be there, no matter what has been written in
any book. The best map of Baja is available from International Travel
Maps of Vancouver, BC Canada, and most good book or map shops will carry
it. I do not agree with others that the AAA map is one to be relied on.
Travelers should be aware when in Baja you are usually many miles away
from medical help. If anything happens that you should need care for,
plan on having a first aid kit. But the best plan is to NOT put yourself
in any unnecessary exposure to injury. I have seen people hiking around
the rocks on the shore of the Sea of Cortez slip and fall on a very
sharp rock, cutting themselves so bad they had to rush back to the U.S.
for proper treatment. Others have gotten bit by Rattlesnakes, which can
be very serious. Personally I have only seen one rattlesnake in my 29
years of traveling there, but they do exist. I'm just lucky, are you?
I hope all of the above will help you have a wonderful trip in Baja. It
is a wonderful place, but remember, it is a third world country. Their
laws are different than ours, but you must abide by them. If you go to
jail for some problem while there, there is NOTHING the U.S. government
can do to get you out. They may be able to help find you a lawyer, or
get you more humane treatment, but that's about it. And be aware, having
a gun, or drugs, WILL get you the ticket that says, "go to Jail, go
directly to Jail, do not stop!". Don't let this be you.
Above all, have fun! Baja is a wonderful place, enjoy it, DON'T rush
through it, take your time. If this is your first trip there, plan on
about one half of what you think you can do. If anyone has questions
that cannot be answered by the above, feel free to contact me by e-mail. =
Feel free to pass this along to other lists that could benefit from
this information.

You're not crazy!!! My first off-road anything was with a fully luggaged =
KLR on a dirt road in Baja on my first motorcycle camping
trip with no support vehicles except the other motorcyclists I was with. =
You're gonna love it. :)

How old are/how many miles on the chain/sprockets? You might consider =
changing those if they're getting to the end of their
lifespan. You can fix a hole in an oil case with jb weld and sand, but =
it's no fun at all...
Change the oil before you leave, then you'll be set there. (Bring an =
extra quart though in case you start burning it or something.
You should have an aftermarket bash plate -- Fred, you may get a phone =
call -- Fred tends to carry the things that make KLR owners
wish they had a bigger credit limit...
Aftermarket handguards are recommended, although not entirely necessary =
the way the aftermarket bash plate is.
Definitely have a spare shift lever on board -- the stock one has a =
habit of bending into modern art.
That's what I can think of off the top of my head. Anyone else?
