Not that I'm expecting a flood of personal e-mail after this, but for the
record, my e-mail address has changed from alarsen@rapidnet.net to
nookie@telus.net.
My old ISP just wasn't up to snuff...
Cheers,

Crikey, the heck with that $65 anti-fog solution, just get a Fog City stick
on thing for around $15 I think. I've got one on my Shoei RF800 and it
works perfectly.

heya. speaking of horrors...
>Two questions: How often people find problems like this with dealers?

yup. i was in a hurry to get some 'streetier' tires on my bike for a recent
2000 mile road trip. got a great price on tires and install... BUT... when
he put the rear tire back on, he put BOTH brake pads on the right of the
disk rotor. so basically i ground aluminum caliper for 200 miles before it
started to feel funny.
a mechanic is just some guy in a shop, but he's just some guy just like you
(unless you are a gal). he might be great, or he could be weak. but he's
not some wizrd with an inate way of doing bike repair the "right" way.
>Second question: Is there a good way to make this 2 left-handed, 10 thumbs

a class might be good, but i found the best way is to learn along the way.
get to understand your bike, and pay attention when things sound or feel
different. take it to someoen who knows how to explain the problem to you,
or get the manual and try to translate it from mechanic to english.
disassemble the part carefully, and try to understand the physics involved.
draw pictures about it. get the right tools; you are a tool-using ape, make
the best out of it.
above all, learn from your mistakes.

YES! that manual rocks! in fact, i would recommend that whatever vehicle
you buy, you also buy that VW manual, if you want to learn how to work on
mechanical items in general.

true. there is a basic assumed knowledge. i know about timing chains
because i dropped one once into the engine of my datsun 510, and found that
to be a very exxpenssive mistake. i had to disassemble almost the whole

I'll go with Fred on this.
There aren't many ways to fix it. If you _really_ wanted to fix it,
you would need another head or maybe the bores could be welded,
the head stress relieved and then the journals rebored. It would
probably be cheaper to get another head unless you had compelling
reasons to keep the original.
Gone are the days of Z900s with their individual, replacable cam
bearing shells.

In the words of the Australain Toyota advert, "Bugger".
I was out roadtesting the muffler on Sunday night when the engine
made some internal noises and stopped. At that stage I was
accelerating from a set of lights.
I'm assuming I've slipped the camchain so I'll flip the lid on the
head this week and check.
Just as well it didn't let go at full power on the dyno, that would
have been much more embarassing.
No big drama as long as it's an easy fix...
If the fix is more involved, then it's just more time and money.
The only other hassle is that I didn't get a chance to dyno the
exhaust.
If there are fixes to be made that would in theory change the
efficiency of the motor and cloud subsequent dyno tests, then it's
no big deal to put the stock muffler back on and fit the DynoJet
recommended DJ136 main jet and graph a new baseline.
As is the custom, "it was going really well, just before it went bang"
"Bugger".
