I've drooled about the KTM Adventure exhaustively. Unfortuantely it isn't
sold in Canada. And while I could bomb across the line to the States and
pick one up, the D.O.T. (dept. of transportation) won't permit it to be
licenced for some reason.

I had to head to the university today and decided what the heck and ride the
KLR. Its about a 300km round trip and I figured the flurries in the weather
forecast would never hit before I got back.
So I blast down to Calgary. It was nice and warm....well okay 3 degress
C...I got away with wearing my summer gloves and electric grips. Sunny...a
really nice ride...especially since I was the only bike on the highway.
Got to the U and sat through a mtg. As I was leaving the U a KLR makes a
left turn in front of me. He had a wicked aluminum box set up. Imagine an
aluminum top box and touratech side boxes all fused into one so it looked
like a upside down "U" ....and was attached to teh KLR rack. I had seen
them on Euro Transalps, but heard they were discontinued even in Europe.
The guy had a two light head start on me so I had to blast. 120kph in a 60
zone, but luckily no cops. He turns into a side street so I am following
him all over this neighbourhood trying to catch up without killing
anyone...including myself.
Eventually he stops and I park next to him...and expalin why I am following
him. I look at his box up close and ...yikes......its plywood painted
silver!! What a drag. It looked great from 50 ft though!
Oh well I want lockable storage on my bike so I am going to take some
measurements and see if a local fabricator can whip something up. I'll go
with the single tail box with side extensions taht hang down for simplicity.
I can't justify $900US for comercial aluminum boxes so we'll see if this
proves to be cheaper.
BTW- rode through some serious flurries on the way home. I wish I had my
camera. I stopped to put on some warmer gloves and my KLR was white!
Cheers,
Vik

That may be true if it was a pre-96 model. They redesigned the bike from the
ground up in 96 and it will pull the lungs out of most singles.

Subject: (klr650) [NKLR] Note to self:watch for trailers
On my way home from Port Orange today, I saw an impatient young lad on
an overly customized Harley decide the right lane (slow lane) traffic in
front of him was going WAY to slow. As the truck to his immediate left
passed (he was riding the centerline pretty tight), he whipped the
fun-handle to a near double digit RPM and proceeded to blast past the
car in front of him. As it turned out, the truck he was hoping to slot
in behind was towing a flat utility trailer. It clipped him nicely even
with the rear axle and the dancing began. I thought he might hold it
together for a moment there but alas he succumbed to a high speed wobble
and rear wheel deformity that sent him sprawling into the ditch. As
those of us immediately behind him braked to avoid pancaking him, before
we knew it we were past his carcass and too far ahead to slow for
assistance without causing further melee. I regret that I didn't get a
chance to stop and assist but saw MANY vehicles stop to respond. I fear
he did not fair so well as he was (1) driving in excess of 80 mph, (2)
wearing a butter dish for a helmet, (3) wearing jeans, a sleeveless
t-shirt and short mesh-back gloves and boots (I think). If he is able to
turn his head after all of this, I hope he learned a quick head turn is
invaluable for avoiding the dreaded flat bed, stealth trailer. I was
re-reminded of it today(first told of its existence in a MSF course
years ago).

Today on the way home from church, we were passed by a Buell S1 weaving
through traffic. What was strange was that th rider was using hand signals
for his lane changes (which were numerous). My astute wife asked why he was
using hand signals on such a new bike. Good question. He had to stop to make a
turn into a gas station and he had his winker on, so his signal(s) seemed to
be fine. What would possess someone to take their hand off the bars while
scooting through traffic to signal when all they had to do was move their
thumb and be much safer? Am I missing something here? Am I becoming and old
fart and out of touch with what is cool? (that can't possibly be it).

Jake, while you're in there take some pictures and do a procedure write-up for the
web/newsletter. How about getting a grease fitting on the swingarm link?

You got it, you noticed him. So did every other driver around. Just what he
wanted. Many riders feel hand signals are unusual enough that cagers notice
them more than the "teeny leettle weenkers" many bikes have.
If you had spent any time on a Gold Wing you'd be used to taking one (or
more) hand off the bars... do it all the time to change the cassette, adjust
the air vents, scratch something, switch from AM to FM, grab a Pepsi from
the passenger, stuff like that. :)
We haven't met, but I'm sure you're still very cool.

Well, it looks like I will not be able to obtain a high output stator from
Electrex. They do offer a 300 watt regulator for the KLR 650. Fred knows a
shop that rewrap's stators, so a solution is available. You may want to
check out your local "serious" bike shops, you know, where they live, eat,
and sleep motorcycles, that type of shop. BMW shops tend to be of this
type, they may be able to help you get your stator rewrapped for higher
output.
I just don't want to take my stator out without a drop-in replacement in
hand!

Can anyone see a problem with mounting this directly to the KLR rack? Would
it need other supports?

I have already been down that route. I have two ammo cans from 50 cal ball
linked ammo, maybe 60L each. Problem is they are made of heavy gauge steel
and weigh a ton empty - 20lbs each.
So I tried, but the boxes are just too damn heavy. Otherwise they are
great....waterproof, tough etc...
Hell if you want I'll give you a good deal on to ammo cans..=)
