One day I'm getting oodles of messages, all neat and tidy; and the next I'm getting' this
mish-mash "digest" thing! Can I go back? What did I do to deserve this?

|I just purchased Progressive fork springs, Russell stainless steel brake
|lines, and Aceerbis Rally Pro guards from Fred Hink. The spacer they
|talk about isn't included with the springs. Is it inside the forks? Is
|it supposed to be 4.5 inches? I understand PVC pipe works. Is it
|reliabl? Do you have to take forks and wheels off or just drain the oil,
|loosen top triple clamp bolts, and pull old ones out and put new ones
|in?
Ron, you can find lots of info at the archive search site:
http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650
The stock spacer length is 51/2" so you either cut an inch off or go the PVC route...I've
never heard of a problem they are very strong. No, you don't have to take the forks or
wheels off but you do have to support your bike and take the weight off the front end or
you have some rockets going off and your fork collapsing...
|My Russell brake lines have a warning about not intended for street use.
|Is this a problem since I will probably do at least 75% street riding on
|these? Any tricks I need to know about putting them on?
Just a disclaimer for legal purposes..the spring and brakelines are the best thing you can
do for your KLR
|
|The aceerbis Rally Pros seems like I need to modify my Trottle sleeve to
|put the bolt through it? Any advice on this? Will I need to make any
|other mods to them to get them on?
|
Yeah, they'll need some loving...

Save your time. I spent it for you. It took me a solid six months to
decide and I could have not been happier. The KLR is by far the best
of its class. I don't think you can put the F650 in that class though.
It's the price that will keep it out. And maybe the weight. Did I
mention the price? Let me see... about $5500.00 set up the KLR to your
liking (and what ever these listers can talk you into) heh, heh, heh...
What is the F650 going for?
> Unfortunately, I can't find one to demo.
Yup, Sold already I'll bet. Kawasaki only makes so many of the KLR's a
year I understand, generally sold out by the end of spring. GET IT
QUICK. (er.. that was my ego taking over, you know, do like me and
you'll do good and all that stuff).
> Do you know how the KLR's ride would compare with the BMW F650? I
rode the F650 today and was impressed. Has plenty of power.
The KLR has all the power I want, even for two up. But you have to
realize my last ride only had 137 dyno ponies at the rear wheel, two
inches off the ground and did not like to turn.
> Is the KLR smooth?
As far as riding comfort, yes. It has even, predictable power and is
very nimble in traffic as well as the river road I just happen to ride
home on.
>Does it buzz?
That would be the sound of sheer joy the rider makes.
Look close at both, let your heart make the choice. That is what this
is all about.

Hello Per,
Good to hear from you, for awhile I thought everyone in Europe had a
T/A. (just kidding).
I agree that the maintenance items you mentioned are important, but I
know hitting a auto or a tree is the quickest way to kill a
bike.(economically)
For that reason I feel safety is the most important thing in
accumulating high miles on a KLR. I try not to ride so fast I have to
rely on my brakes too often. Unless your racing If you have to use the
brakes you're going too fast.
Actually I haven't checked my valves in 50k miles, kind of a sick
experiment to see what happens. I use my ears to listen to the motor and
gauge the valves that way. I also whenever possible ride slowly the
first mile (under 3k rpm), then 50-60 mph for a minimum of 15 mins, then
slow down for another mile or so before shutting off. I don't warm up
the motor while the bike is leaning left on the sidestand.
I continously vary the rpm's while riding and don't go over 5700 rpms
(usually). I use high grade quality motor oil. And I never doubt the
excellent reliability of the KLR650. Oh yeah I use chevron w/ techroline
92 octane and/or 76/Unocal 92 Octane always!! Don't forget the inline
fuel filter too.

Hi there
I have a 1989 KLR 650 with 35,000 miles on the clock.
My bike tells the same story as Conalls' below.
Burns no oil and still has all the power left. I use it almost every day
commuting.
Took mine on a trip to Germany this summer (on vacation). That trip alone
was about 1250 miles and the KLR went flawless.
In my opinion the 4 secrets are (in order of importance)
1. Change oil and filter regularly
2. Adjust the balancer chain properly (and often)
3. Check (and, if necessary adjust) the valveclearances from time to time
4. Keep the airfilter clean, really important if you ride in the dirt
often.
What are your secrets?
Keep your frontwheels up!

Just a comment: This is a pretty big downside because if you drop the bike you
are almost GUARANTEED to put dents in your gas tank. This is a lesson I learn

If anyone is still interested in viewing the Kawasaki (wanabe 60's
Triumph even though Kawasaki made them back then too) retro-machine you
can find one at this Euro site. I have to admit it is interesting.
http://www.motomag.com/nouveau/munich/kaw6501.htm
I wonder if it sounds as good as it looks. I wonder if you can get a
sissy bar/luggage rack for it. I wonder if it's got plenty of room for
two up distance riding. Hey....wait a minute....I wonder if it will
ever be sold in the U.S..

today. But it takes a 100 mile ride to really find out what it's
like.
Again, my datum is not really everybodys. Comparing to what I have
been riding for the last few years, the KLR's seat is a "lazy-boy"
compared to an upside-down "wicker basket". I have put not more than
150 miles at a time on without stretching the legs, but that was with
two-up, placing me more forward than normal, still no numbutt feeling...
> Do you still have the stock seat on your KLR650, or have you
replaced it with something else? What other add-on's have you done?
I have only added a set of Kawasaki saddle bags and gasoline to my
ride. Nothing else... YET!
I am thinking about the "required" mods: Stainless steel overbraid
front brake line and progressive fork springs.
Do the right thing Luke, feel the force, it is drawing you to the KLR
side...

Many of you have tried (and liked) my GearCalc program. With everyone on the
list adjusting their valves I decided to make a new creation: KLR ShimCalc.
You can download ShimCalc at: www.ironjungle.com Then click on the software
link.
The software gets an overwhelming thumbs up from the Beta site testers; Kurt,
Fred, and Gino.
Like GearCalc; ShimCalc is FREEware. Enjoy it. If you have a suggestion
please send me and email.
Regards,
Pat Austin, TX '97 @ 10.5K
The program description reads:
- ------------------------------
KLR valve clearance adjustment just got simpler with ShimCalc. The "mechanic"
inputs the measured clearance, the current shim size and the desired clearance
for each valve. The program outputs the new shims needed, the Kawasaki P/N for
the shims needed, and identifies any shims that can be reused.
In addition, ShimCalc has a quick reference screen for factory specs, a notes
area (for mileage, date, etc.), and can provide a printout to bring to your
favorite parts person for ordering and maintenance records.
Requires Windows 3.x, Windows 95, or Windows NT
