Sounds cool, but if I was on a trip beyond 4 or 5 or 6 gallons I'd want a
steel tank that can be repaired using a welder or epoxy.

I knew this would be a warm, furry evening. Just when LA is posting
record lows, people close their houses and crank up the heat. No factor
for HVAC ventilation and excess carbon monoxide (over and above normal
dose). Where's Hiro?
I'll make sure your question is first on the list.

Subject: (klr650) Smaller Tank?
I know I'm going to sound like a heretic around here, especially with all of
this talk about needing to carry MORE gas, for Gods sake, but I have a
question.
Will a KLR 600 tank fit on a 650? I rarely need 6 gallons of fuel, and my
tank was filled with epoxy to fix a leak by some Mensa graduate in the dim
distant past, so I want to get another tank, and would like something smaller.
In a perfect world, I'd like my Urban Assault Vehicle to look more like a dirt
track bike than the Exxon Valdez. I know that there are plastic tanks
available, but the one I'm familiar with also holds something like 5 gallons.
Anybody? Any ideas? I can do some mount fabrication if necessary.

EXCELLENT POINT TOM!!!!! Those thoughts have been on my mind throughout
this whole dialogue. So glad you saw fit to highlight them. Too often
these "other factors" get lost in our quest to go
"higher-farther-and-faster." Nothing could eliminate our off-road fun
faster than some half wit torching a few thousand acres of Northern
California outback, not to mention the sheer waste and stupidity of such
an incident. I agree, let's think about what we're doing...

Subject: (klr650) wilderness values
i will not take any "motorheads" advice on voting down more wilderness. more
natural lands are imperative as a mitigation to our "effect" of creating a
desert out of every type of "land use" we create. we are already in an
overpopulation situation. and these last remaining wild lands are to valuable
for cleanliness & quantity of water, air, biodiversity, open space, habitat
for the other biology & services we depend upon and recreation oportunities
much more important than our pastime of riding over the land on motors. that
includes jet skiis & snowmobiles. motorcycles (and all motors)
morally should be deligated to practical, functional purposes, like
transportation inorder to reach natural areas where we can do higher quality
forms of recreation in (such as hiking, non-motorized, less impact forms,
natural expressons, climbing, river running,
mountaineering, mtn. biking, forms that require our own physical interaction,
appropriate technology, more sustainable, healthier, etc.) we need to look
beyond our own self interest (riding motrcycles) and think of the greater
good. can we do that?
we've never done it yet. we need to change our attitudes to healthier less
impact choices.
hey i love to motorcycle- but i use it for transportation- not the final
recreation goal-
the other non-motorized forms of recreation are more fun, healthier (on mind &
body) and gentlier on our future.
i will always vote to preserve nature during this era of subsidized fossil
fuels (changing our attitude to devalue nature) we do nothing to give back to
nature, we always take & take. it can't go on much longer and still keep our
quality of life high.
if your an astute naturalist you already have seen severe degradation in
wildlife, rivers, all freshwater habitats, the ocean, the forests (4% of
pristine old growth left, etc.) riding motorcycles is nothing compared to the
pleasures of enjoying the wonder of nature- naturally.
don't lose your perspective.

I always strive to Mark. It seems to me that you've fallen short
this time. Is the 'overpopulation situation' you're talking about
the same one that was preached back in school? Then don't support
crisis hotlines, support abortion! And while you're at it don't preach
to me that your mtn.biking or rafting are somehow closer to God
than my preference for moto. When will we have enough preserves
for your taste? I'm not supporting opening areas that have already
been set aside, but where does it end? I have found a way to enjoy
nature while on my motorcycle. Hiking to the top of Half Dome is a
different kind of enjoyment. I want and now have both. I suggest you
rethink your perspective.

Ron,
There are several places you could stick it, but only one of them is
worth the effort. Since I`m a macho male, I choose to carry mine somewhere
more readily accessible. I carry my 9" Halon bottle in the side pouch of my
Eclipse tank bag. Great for runaway camp fires.

Agreed.
But making it a wilderness area means that noone can go in it. At least, that's
what I've been able to gather from having read a Draft Environmental Impact
Statement from the BLM about one of my favorite pieces of desert.
Have you read any more about this than what's on the commonly available news
servers (watered-down pap IMHO)?

Mark,
I don`t want to start another "non-KLR" discussion here, but I will say
that while I respect your opinions and agree to a point with some of them,
you can`t go stating that what is "recreation" to you, should be "recreation
" for everyone else. For your views to be respected, you have to respect the
views of others, whether you agree or not. Just because you don`t use your
motorcycle for recreation, doesn`t give you or anyone else the right to
dictate that I shouldn`t use MY bike for recreation. That`s your choice, and
while we still have a Constitution and a Republic form of government, I have
MY choice.
One last thing; here in Montana , we are having a serious problem with
damaged areas in our wilderness areas due to soil erosion caused by , guess
what, too much mountain bike use and too high a density of hikers wearing
aggressively soled footwear. Go figure.
I mountain bike quite a bit and was doing so long before it was a fad,
but because I only ride Forest Service roads, everyone else should limit
their travel to the same, right Mark?
That`s a very small amount of my .02 worth, and all I`ll say. I promise

Hello All,
My '96 came to me with a Cobra exhaust (yes, very loud) and a K&N jet kit
(I'm not sure what size jet or what groove the needle is set at). The top
of the air box was drilled out with 15 1/2" holes and the air filter was
stock. The pilot screw plug has also been removed but I do not know how
many turns out the screw has been reset at. All this seemed to be in
balance, I had no flat spots, the bike started easily, idled smoothly and
pulled well from idle to redline.
Yesterday I put in a K&N air filter and the performance changed. It still
starts easily, and idles well. It pulls strongly from 5000 rpm on up, maybe
even a little stronger than before The trouble is a sense of "flatness" in
the midrange, between 2000 and 4500 rpm at less than full throttle.
I've been to the archives and searched for and read many of the posts that
pertain to setting up/rejetting/adjusting carbs. I'm a bit lost, I must
admit. Your input as to logical sequence of steps to resolve this condition
would be greatly appreciated. HELP!
Thaks,
Guy Cheney
