I'm considering the Nolan N100, Nolan X1001, Arai Quantum, Arai Dual-Sport.
I've never heard any comments or recommendations regarding the Dual-Sport.
Anyone out there care to comment/suggest?

Well, it was bound to happen. I got a call this morning from a happy owner
of a brand new BMW F650 wanting to subscribe to DSN. He told me about the
great deal "about $8,400" and all of the accessories he ordered for it. He
said he had been contemplating the KTM 640 R Adventure, "...but the F650 won

Arai DS helmet is great.. you can switch visors in seconds or install the
dual sport peak with a couple screws. Its a nice quality helmet. My dislikes
are that wind comes up from under it right into your eyes drying them out.
Also, it fogs up worse than most of my other lids in the winter. I bought
something from dennis kirk that covers the bottom opening of the helmet
around the neck to keep the wind out. The fog is still a problem.

Subject: Re: (klr650) Buying in Canada...NKLR
I have never researched importing bikes from Canada but I know a little
about brining cars in. The statement about the Ca. emissions sticker is
correct, however emissions has absolutely nothing to do with the $300. That
law was passed to recover sales tax lost in the state as a result of people
crossing from Ca. to Ore. where there is no sales tax, thus beating the
state of Ca. out of several thousand dollars worth of tribute on each new
car. Once here the non Ca. vehicles pass exactly the same emissions test.
Its a revenue thing. Bikes don't ever get tested so its a farce. I know
people that have brought cars and trucks not sold here in from Canada
Toyota Land Cruiser Pickups....nice rig... and Volkswagen crewcab
transporters....equally cool). They pulled the statue of liberty play and
registered them in another state first before bringing them here. One
potential snag is the vehicle label..emissions and id placard. If you look
at cars on a Canadian lot some of them have labels printed in FRENCH...oui.
This freaks out simple minded DMV and US customs clerks...NO NO. Find one
in English and its real simple. I know of one guy that brought a VW
EUROVAN CREWCAB in from Toronto. When the Canadian customs people asked him
where he intended to register it he replied New Jersey, the Canucks promptly
refunded 100% of his Canadian sales tax. In New Jersey they registered it
as a used car for $75 bucks or so.....no tax. Pretty slick. The English
language paper work is critical.

I talked with Redline M/C in North Palm Beach, Florida and they said that
one of their distributors confirmed Arai D/S helmets were in stock. The

Subject: (klr650) How to Carry Extra Fuel?
List,
I need to figure out how to carry a couple of gallons of fuel on the KLR.
Since it's only for a couple of trip legs this summer, the first obvious
choice is on the rear rack, but I wondered if anyone had some suggestions
to carry a temporary fuel container forward of the rider? I got a water
bottle on the crossbar already.

Some one was working on a fuel cell that fit where the skid plate would be.

From:
Subject: (klr650) Bash Plates... I need your input!
So I was thinking in the shower this morning, (where I do my best design
work;-)), I'm trrying to figure a way to increase my fuel capacity. I
could always add a fuel cell to the rear rack but I don't want to give
up my topcase, It is just too convienient when I stop and need to be
able to lock up my gear. I could expand the capacity of the standard
fuel tank, but the bike is already kinda top heavy and I'm concerned
that increasing the tank size by 4.9 gallons may make it sooo top heavy
that it falls over on the side stand. Plus it's going to be tricky
increasing the capacity that much and still keeping the petcock the
lowest part of the tank.
Then I think, why is it such a tough problem? Other bikes can expand
their tank. The KLR already has a large tank. OK, where else could I add
a fuel cell and lower the center of gravity. Nowhere, the bike is packed
into the frame pretty tightly.Hmmm, The bike is taller than most with no
spare room in the frame, what's wrong with this picture??? Ground
clearance, I got more ground clearance than other road bikes. What if I
make a fuel cell, basically the area of the skid plate and a depth and
shape that would hold 4.9 gallons... This is an intriging idea that I
think will work, I'll need to rig a fuel pump to refill the main tank
but that shouldn't be a problem.
OK, Here is the question, Has anyone ever pierced an aftermarket bash
plate? Remember I don't go offroad so I really don't need the ground
clearance. However, I still need to figure out how heavy to make the
cell construction, I want to use an aftermarket bash plate as a standard
if, in all the collective bashing miles you guys have done, no one hase
ever pierced one.
Thanks in advance,

Yeah, that was me. I still have the prototypes in the garage but dropped
work on it for a few reasons:
1) 3.x gal was the right configuration. It allowed for the best fabrication
techniques etc. but I wanted 4.9 gallons. The more I worked on shapes and
ideal configurations the lower the tank capacity got.
2) I had intended to use the bash plate mounting points and after analysis I
got to wondering if the 5mm mounts would be strong enough.
3) I never solved the plumbing problem. With unlimited funds, the cleanest
solution would be to buy a CA gastank and run a line from the aux tank to a
fuel pump to the extra vent in the CA tank.

Subject: (klr650) KLR Side Protector/Support
I just picked up Kawasaki part # K99994-498 which is completely different than
Kawasaki's initial photo. First it is for the right side only with no
matching left side bracket offered. Second it is a single fairly heavy metal
bracket that keeps the saddle bag off the exhaust but still allows it to rub
on the plastic side plate. This is not a well thought out part and I don't
think offers any competion for Tim Bernard's excellent product. Price is
$40.95 but if it doesn't work well cheap doesn't mean much.

Prototypes? You got prototypes? Does that mean you fabricated tanks, or

I built cardboard and plywood prototypes of various capacities that I
installed and tested for road worthiness. I setup an Excel spreadsheet to
calculate the volumes as I played with the dimensions. Then transferred the
dimensions to Visio and printed out the designs.
