Kurt,,
I said that I would check into it and had a chance today, so I thought I would pass
along the information I got.
Now remember that all the information with state law refers to Washington, which
should be relatively similar to Utah.
Now this is NOT a grey market bike, it is a new exported bike that is road
worthy.
You need 2 things changed: 1. speedo must have miles (Canadian version does not)
2. must have an EPA sticker (Canadian
version does have)
So initially the only modification required is the speedo.
All Canadian taxes - PST (provincial sales tax) and GST (goods and services tax) are
refunded from US Customs on account that exported vehicles do not require to pay
taxes. If you licence it to ride on the road in Utah you will have to pay you local
state tax on the value. Finally the last factor that matters is that duty does apply
- - 10% on first $1000. and .7% on balance. So this means that on $5482.(the quoted
Canadian price from a dealer - with one left for '99) the duty applicable would be
$131.37 Canadian.
Here's how it adds up,,,
$5482.C = $3654US (@1.50%) Retail Price
$ 131.37 = $ 87.US (@ 1.50%) Duty Price
$------- = $ your local tax
$------- = $ speedo ($200.max)
____________________________
$3941.58 + local tax (ie.7%) = $ 4217.49
>From my discussion, I got that a lot of Americans do this on account he knew exactly
what all the perimeters where, he said that on a $5500 bike the savings will be app.
$400-$600 US, it really becomes a big savings once you start talking about $10K
bikes like the F4. He says on an average being right on the border they sell 10-15%
of their business to Americans.
FYI
Brian.

Brian, Vik, Hungree and others, thanks for all your help. I called Blackfoot in
Calgary yesterday and got a similar price, around $3,600 American. Then I started
making the calls to customs, the state, etc. It looks like there are distinct issues.
The GST is one. Blackfoot won't sell to an American unless they ship it via a bonded
shipper to a customs port. They offered to have one of their staff members appear on
the sale however. So, this does not seem to be a problem.
The state, Utah is very relaxed about things...all they want is paperwork including a
manufacturers statement of origin MSO and receipts. Then a customary safety check.
The big issue is customs as if you get this wrong they can confiscate the bike. I
couldn't get the Blackfoot sales rep to do anymore than check with one of his
colleagues who told him it isn't a problem because it is a street/dirt bike. He
wouldn't couldn't tell me if the bike has an EPA sticker. This is the biggee as it has
to meet the EPA standards and have a stamp, certificate or whatever. I searched online
for the EPA stuff and it will take some more work. I wonder if the speedo is a DOT
issue...if it is and (not a state) than that would have to be done before the bike
cleared customs. Your info is much more definitive. Can you give me a contact name?
I'm kind of up for an adventure and I'm having trouble getting anyone to match Gino's
4,300 for the DR350SE.
Thanks again,
Kurt

"Can anyone recommend a good tank bag that will fit the KLR other than
the one made by Kawasaki? I understand the Kawasaki one may not be too
durable."
I have the Kawasaki tank bag-- it proved to be a disappointment on a
recent trip. The expansion zipper fell off before I was able to use it.
Okay I asked for it... I should have known better than to take it out of
the box. The clear plastic separated from the black vinyl in no time
flat. My fault again... I was staring too intently at the map it was
holding. I ripped the rest of the plastic out, took it to a shoe repair
place and had them sew the little map slot shut and re-install the
errant zipper-- all for $2. You gotta love these Panamanian sweatshops!
I'm pleased as punch with it now. For what it's worth...

I just saw a pix and description in the "Fire + Steel" Accessories
catalog at my local dealer. Also a P/N. He couldn't find it on his
microfiche...
I can get the P/N if someone wants it.

Subject: (klr650) High Octane Fuel
The local motorcycle parts and accessories emporium has 5 gallon cans of
108 octane "Racing Fuel." It's about $5 a gallon, about the price of ethyl
at the pump in Canada, eh? As usual I have a laundry list of questions.
(If you do not ask, Grasshopper, how are you to know?). Here goes:
1) If used regularly, can this gas harm the engine? (Burn valves or such?)
2) Does timing or anything else (carburetion?) need to be adjusted?
3) 93 octane is the highest one can get out of the pump around here. Mixed
half and half you'd get about 100 octane. Anybody played around with this
before? How much faster will I be able to get to the next traffic jam?

I too shared a similar failure to Juan with my Kawasaki tank bag. The
plastic separated from the edge banding leaving the bag unclosable. Prior
to that I used it daily and liked the design and mounting method a lot. I
think mine is probably easily repaired by the local sailmaker, I am going to
try a different window material if possible. I would like to take this
opportunity to praise Tim Bernards side racks again. Too cool, too hip, too
now! No really great addition to the bike, superb craftsmanship, great fit
and finish. It is my understanding that Tim may have a new soft
luggage/rack innovation on the horizon but I won't steal his thunder.
I like my Kawasaki tank bag but I think it could be improved. A nice
addition would be a loop under the plastic to suspend a pocket watch or a
strapless wrist watch for easy viewing. Possibly a little more volume and
maybe side pockets for keys and stuff you don't want to fish for.

Guy, the higher octane will let you lug the engine a little lower on the tach,
but will not get you much without higher compression. Save you money and get

Fred,
Mine are due in the 12th. Cost, $47. They have supposedly been beefed up
from the original design. I`ll let you know if it`s thumbs up or down.

My approach was to cut and bend a piece of aluminum plate to bolt to the
exaust system underneith the RH side cover, preventing it from being
pressed into the hot muffler. The plate is oversized and hang down well
below the bottom of the panel, guargin the entire exhaust system. No
further heat damage to the side panels has occured. I have a piece of
sheepskin laced into the straps for the saddlebags as a seat cover, with
extra flaps of the sheepskin hanging down to protech the side panels from
the rubbing of the bags.
