Tom,

The KLR 600 Base service manual is for the '84 model and the KLR 650
Supplement is for models '87-'95.  There is no other supplements after the
A9 that I know of.  You still need both manuals to cover all aspects of the
later model KLRs.

    Oh, I already have both. I was just curious to see if Kawa had bothered to
do an update on the supplement.

Subject: (klr650) List is so quiet, new topic - KLR protection....

Man...I don't remember the list being this quiet in a long time! Sooooooooo,
I'll ask this question to maybe spark some discussion. Since the KLR Radiator
and Tank are so expensive to replace, does anybody make any kind of protection
along the lines of the Bernard side protector racks? Such as some type of
metal tank protector, or metal radiator guard? How about engine guards? Has
anybody ever dropped a bike with Aerostitch Tank Panniers on, and had them
save the tank and/or radiator? Maybe they're the answer for protection. Just a
few questions rattling around in the back of my mind on a slow night.........

Yup, me.  Did a 35 mph pavement crash last April and there is know doubt in my
mind that the Aerostich tank panniers saved the tank.  I have a tool roll in
the side that hit the pavement.

I've thought about this very problem before especially since I've dropped
the bike on its radiator side a couple of times, no damage yet.  I noticed
a KLR on the Dual Sport page that has rounded case guards (looks like bent
tubing, probably attached to the front engine mount), but I haven't heard
if it is sold by someone or if it is just a homemade thing (anybody know?).
 I seems that if the guards are wide enough and maybe a bit higher up
(closer) to the radiator it would provide pretty good protection for it.
I've never thought that the engine itself on the KLR needs much protection
because its pretty well tucked away, but that radiator is so tender, and so
exposed.

Since I don't know how to make links on e-mail, I'll just have to give
directions to the picture.  Its on the KLR page we all know and love, click
on "Anatomy of a KLR", then click on soft luggage.  The picture is towards
the bottom of that page, it has all the Kawasaki luggage on it and you can
just barely make out the case guards up front.  I also noticed that this
bike has the coolest exhaust I have ever seen for the KLR.  If anyone knows
who makes this exhaust, please let me know!

Carlos, that's Gino's rig in one of its many guises. The silencer is a Laser
Produro Exhaust and my guess is that the tubing you're looking at is a 5 star
engine protector (Gino was advertising this piece for a long time, you might
check to see if he still has it). I think you can order them from Ride West.

Subject: (klr650) Progressives installed while forks on the KLR650?.

Has anybody had any problems with installing Progressive fork springs with the
forks still on the bike? Seems like it would be alot quicker and easier? What
is the point of taking the forks off, unless you need new fork boots or
something?  More questions in the back of my mind (Also someone on the message
board) :)

I knew it! I knew it! I keep seeing KLR's with the panniers on there; and I
keep thinkin' to myself "Wow, in addition to a great useful product, I'd get
the bonus of tank protection!" I've been thinking about getting some, and at
$117.00, the price for protection ain't cheap. but it ain't too expensive
either. I'm 5'11", so they probably wouldn't interfere with my knees.

Jake, unless I blinked and missed it what we were talking about were Kawasaki side
protector guides ala Driveline's. The engine guards came up yesterday and come from 5
star and RideWest.

Fellow listers...

I've been kicking around the idea of putting together a list of people
who would be willing to provide a place to stay to touring or broken
down listers.  Nothing too taxing, just for a night; or two at the most.
Something along the the lines of what the BMW folks have going, but
maybe a little more simple.  Membership on the list would be the only
pre-requisite required for it's use.  I think this would serve as an
incentive for membership along with encouraging the spirit of mutual
assistance and generosity, not to mention the added security such a
policy might provide.  WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?  If the response is
positive I'll volunteer to carry the water on this project.  A
self-addressed stamped envelope would get you a questionnaire to look
over, fill out, and sign.  I'll also put out an e-mail with a Word
attachment for those of you who can work it that way.  A few rules and
common sense courtesies will also be printed on the document.  A
signature and remittance would constitute an acceptance of those
conditions.  I'll let you all mull this over for a few days before I
make a decision on whether or not to go forward with this.  I'd like to
also request that you send a carbon copy of any comments you may have to
the list, as I believe this is a topic that is best discussed in a forum
environment.  If this thing is a go, I'd be looking for a 28 February
deadline on the return of the questionnaires, and a
publishing/distribution of the list by no later than 30 April, in time
for the spring/summer touring season.  OVERSEAS LISTERS (such as myself)
are especially welcome (critical?).

On another note...  Sometimes the simplest ideas really are the best
ones...  I read a posting some time ago from someone who said they
bungeed a milk crate to the luggage plate of their KLR for local grocery
hauling.  I just got a hold of a crate a few days and man, what a
godsend!  The payload is amazing...  My bike has become critical to my
quality of life, given that the traffic down here is absolutely
horrendous.  My only difference is that I used a pair of 3/4 inch wide
nylon straps with the plastic slip-clips to secure it to my bike.  I
have about 5 or 6 of these straps, varying from 3 to 5 feet in length,
put together at an outdoor supply store.  Much better than bungees in
all regards: strength, adjustability, ease of use and removal, etc.  We
learn as we go I suppose...
