Subject: (klr650) Duro tires
I saw a post early on Duro 60/40 tires and would like to try a set. Does
anyone know where I can mail order a set. I didn't see any in Dennis Kirk
or Chaparral. The web-site does not have a dealer list or etc. I was going
to get the IRC GP110 but the duros sound equal, if not better and cost less
from previous posts.

I e-mailed both addresses on the web site asking for dealer or distributor
info but as yet have not gotten a reply. I have asked two dealer friends if
they have any info and so far the answer is no. Duro seems to be strong in
the ATV tire market so I am going to try checking with a local ATV type shop
and if I get any info will post it to the list.

Subject: (klr650) Thermostat
My bike (A12, 3,500 miles) has had two thermostats this year. Both behaved
identically.
If riding on the highway or paved back roads, the temperature gauge needle
stays far to the left side of the gauge, just off the cold position,
regardless of the outside temperature. If chugging along in second gear on
dirt roads, the needle stays in the middle of the gauge, regardless of the
outside temperature.
The needle has never gone past the middle of the gauge, regardless of the
speed or outside temperature.
The original thermostat was replaced, under warranty, to repair a coolant
leak at the thermostat housing.
On my bike then, the road speed of the bike, not the outside temperature or
motor RPM, determines how hot the motor runs. This behavior is reminiscent
of the behavior of car engines that had the thermostat removed for some
reason.
If I was just a casual observer, I would say that the KLR cooling system is
generally set up to overcool the engine. This is a good thing. Thanks.

Brian,
Good questions all; keep on asking em'. When I first joined this list, I asked
some of the same questions, as do most of the new owners wanting to improve
their bikes.
(Needle Adjustment) I did this to my 98' KLR and had good results. Screwed the
screw in and backed it out.2 3/4-3 turns and did definitely feel a difference
in low end response. The bike wheelies easier. Just crack the throttle at
around 3500 RPM and tug a little and can pull em' easily. Didn't come up as
easy before I adjusted the screw. Just make sure you drill out the right plug.
One guy on the list drilled out the wrong one a while back. If you need help
on locating it, let me know (or the list).
<<I'm curious........is the KLR generally considered to be a pretty quick
bike, or am I just letting my inexperience show through.>>
If you're a good rider, you can embarass some less/mid-experienced sport-
riders on twisty roads. I do it all the time with friends. BUT....you ain't
gonna win any straight line races on the KLR against sport-bikes. Some of them
weigh just a little more than our KLR's, but have 100 H.P. or more! Still it's
fun to watch em pull away in the straights, and catch up to em' in the
corners. The only places I've been left in the dust are on the straights, where
some of the guys pull 130 plus mph. Our beloved KLR's just can't hang with
that, but I consider it a blessing; it keeps me outta ticket trouble. I used
to ride a VFR750, and was flying right up there with em'.
No danger of that now. To even come close to keeping up on the KLR. you HAVE
to be on the gas and pushing the engine pretty hard. It's best to just kick
back and enjoy a more relaxed riding style, and use the KLR for what it was
designed for.
She's not super-quick, but she's no slouch either! I spend a lot more time
riding out in the country now, finding dirt/gravel roads by myself. Much for
fun, and less dangerous than speed.
<< Is this "problem" what others have been discussing on the
group recently when they're talking about filling the handle bars with caulk
or something, or putting some type of vibration absorbers on them? Also,
do you experienced guys recommend putting different handle grips on?>>
Yes. Many of us have put some type of heavy Metal/Lead/BB's in our bars,
mixing it with silicone or something else, to help calm the vibration. I used
it in combination with some thick foam grips and it made a definite
improvement; but you should probably try new grips first, as they seem to help
the most. Many on the list use the Pro Grip "gel" grips that you can get from
Fred Hink at Arrowhead Motorsports here on the list. I purchased my foam grips
from J.C. Whitney, and like em' better than the any other types of grips I've
tried so far

For those doubting the Outback was real (I had my doubts), I just got my
January issue of Dirtbike magazine and they have a section on bike not
available in the U.S. (Over There) and they have a small blurb on the
Outback and a few "real" photos. They mention nothing of it coming to the
U.S. or it's claimed weight.

I wouldn't think about any SuperTrapp model except the IDS for the KLR. But,
at this point, I would wait a week on the Big Gun...it has been vaporware

Side racks are $145.24 to listers & have grey in stock today. The shifter I
sent you was a McDonalds product. I am currently working on side racks for
fixed luggage. They will really be cool [pun intended] we are using soft
sided coolers with plastic insert. Some other things are in the works too.

Gotta tell a story here regarding Armor All and my motorcycle...
Back around '84, I was in the Army, and my trusty Yamaha TS185 was my
link to the world off post. I was stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA, and rode
everywhere; even the 100+ mile trip to the ocean at least twice a year.
One of my favorite pastimes was to go blasting down the tank trails on
the weekends. I'd go flying down these dirt roads at 50-60 MPH, often
getting airborne on some of the larger bumps. There were often
mud/water puddles, and I loved to try to jump completely over them.
Needless to say, I often didn't make it, and the bike and I would often
return home rather muddy.
As often happens, I had to spend a week in the field, playing Army games
(field training). I entrusted my bike to my best friend Ray, who was
not a part of this exercise. He had often borrowed the bike for a few
hours to run errands and such. In fact, he had the spare key.
Well, I had been out tank trail riding the day before leaving for the
field. Ray promised to wash the bike, since I hadn't had the chance to
do that. He promised to return a clean bike.
"Clean" doesn't begin to describe it. He had polished and waxed
everything; even getting the chain lube off of the rear wheel. It
looked like a brand new bike.
I got on the bike, and started off. Now, while leaving the parking
area, I normally stood up so I could see over the parked cars. It was a
hundred feet or so to the stop sign, so I normally didn't shift out of
first gear.
I hit the brakes rather hard, as I usually did for that sign. That's
when I realized that Armor All shouldn't be put on the seat... Certain
sensitive body parts contacted the gas tank in a rather forceful manner.
Having learned that rather painful lesson, I rode a bit more carefully.
The next day, I found that I have a mild allergy to Armor All.. it
causes a rather irritating rash.
I got rather annoyed at that, but at least he didn't do the tires.
A friend of mine had a sport bike, and loved Armor All. However, the
first time he did his brand new bike, he didn't realize he was
effectively putting oil on the part of his tires that contact the ground
on hard turns.
Fortunately, he was doing around 25 MPH when he realized his mistake.
Didn't do too much damage to the bike, but it hurts when the bike is
only two weeks old.

Armor All also will attack certain kinds of rubber. Even if you use it
strictly on the sidewall, it can cause the tire to fail.
If you *must* Armor All the tires, use the stuff designed specifically
for tires.
