Ken: assuming you are speaking of a Dynojet kit. Remember, your 148 Keihin
jet is not the equivalent of Dynojet's numbering system. I believe it makes
reference to this in the install sheet. Also, richer ain't necessarily
better!! You need the proper air/fuel ratio for best performance, not just
"more gas".
I suggest you call Dynojet. My guess is their largest jet will be MORE than
enough. If you are at a higher altitude, it may even be too much. They
would have an opinion and could better explain it.
Subject: (klr650) Jet sizes & Needles
>My existing main jet was labeled 148. So I'm going to try the jet labeled
150. I don't plan on using the 136 that came with the kit, so I was thinking
about drilling that out to 1/16" and using that. Is this working for anyone?
I don't care about fuel economy, as long as I can get 150 miles from a tank.
>
>The jet kit comes with a needle and 2 washers and 2 circlips. It sounds
like you put the circlip on groove 4 (stage2), and then lay the washers on
top of that. So you end up with an extra circlip?

On a Kawasaki website somewhere in Europe I saw 48 hp for the KLR650. With
the lean jetting, the California model is probably a bit less (although I
think Germany has a lower power output than anywhere in the U.S), t that can
be fixed! (Not that I'm advising anyone to do it, but jetting and an
opened-up air filter and muffler probably add 5-10% to the bike's midrange
and top end power output.) Even so, the Swedish bike would be incredibly
fast, faster than our KLR650s, and it looks good to me, with the 23-liter
tank! Rob C.

That Highland Motors V-twin is pretty impressive! That bike should lead the
other manufacturers into the future. I was right about to buy a 99 KLR and
I'm starting to have second thoughts after seeing that. The Horsepower
figure is throwing me off. I have a spec sheet from Kawasaki and have
visited their web site and never seen mention of the bikes horsepower? Does
anyone know where I can find some boneified specs on that? How does the KLR
stand up to that 920 V-twin? Ah, that must feel awesome!
And while I'm on the wire.. Any riding buddies in Beantown looking in?

I've thought about this a few times, over the past few years:
1) KLR650 A12 '98 (I have): General purpose, do-anything fun bike.
2) KLR250 '97 (I have): Fun in the dirt.
3) Kawasaki Voyager 1200 VXII '98 (I have): Better than a Gold Wing (I've
had both.).
4) Honda Trials 350: (for excitement at sane speeds; I could ride it to the
events.)
5) Honda CX650 Sport Turbo: (a classic, compact marvel of engineering; I had
a 500)
6) Kawasaki Concours ZG1000: (for when I want to be faster than on my
Voyager)
7) Triumph Bonneville 750: (for old times' sake)
8) BMW K-series 1200: (their newest one is (?) 130 hp, and should last
forever)
9) Honda Pacific Coast 800: (another classic, very convenient except for
servicing)
10) Suzuki GSXR(?)1300 (their new superbike): (I'd like to see 150mph
occasionally)

I'm noticing alot of PC800's showing up in peoples lists. The MC press
always said it took a special breed to identify with the PacCoast, I
just never knew it was this radical underground faction known

I too noticed the PC800 showing up in the lists. I sold my 89 to get my KLR.
The only two things that I didn't like and sent me to the KLR side of the
house are these:
1) Fuel capacity is too small for the bike. Something like 4.2 gallons. If
I could havae carried something like 6 gallons, it would probably still be in
my garages.
2) When I walked away from the bike, I didn't turn around to look at it. I
don't know what word you would use for this, I call it character.... I enjoy
looking at the KLR...
When I bought the PC I was very close to buying a TransAlp but I let a
friend's opinion of the bike sway me. NEVER AGAIN!! (He doesn't like the KLR
either, but life's tough sometimes.) I would have a PC800 again, it's a great
sport-tourer. That bike flat hauls in the mountains, trust me on that one.
Just my $.02 worth.
MN Ron (had to let you know I'm still here....)
