OK - this is blatant advertising, but I liked the book, which finally came out
in English recently. Some have seen the multimedia show that Helge Pederson
puts on. He is the character from Norway who rode a R80 GS around the world
but took 10 years to do it, and captured some fine photos along the way. Here
are some of the coming times and places for his show, and places to get
tickets. If anyone saw the one he just did in Boulder, please let us know if
it was as good as we have heard.
If this sort of notice, dual-sport but not KLR, annoys anyone, pls comment.

NO FEAR!
I had a similar situation with a loose adjuster, but could only blame =
myself! Mine loosened to the point that the adjuster arm came free of =
locking on its shaft. There were no ill effects, but it did mean that =
the arm had to be replaced at about 1 1/2 hrs labour. If the spring on =
your tensioner is still pulling on the arm I'd say you're home free.

Subject: (klr650) KLR650: Knock
After reading the various responses to the knock sound I had a chance to
ride today and check some of the things mentioned. It appears that the knock
is some kind of resonate vibration in the fairing at around 3300 to 3600
rpm. I can push on the black cover behind the headlight and it seems to
lower it a bunch to almost completely removing it. I know some of you
mentioned that you had problems with rattles and noises in the fairing. This
noise sounds about like someone hitting the top of the engine with a block
of wood everytime it fires. I'll keep messing with it next time I can ride
and maybee remove some of the covers and see if it goes away.
I have a 98' with 700 miles.
Thanks

Subject: (klr650) Country Ride/Deer/Near High Side.....
The KLR and I went for a nice long ride yesterday. Went waaaay out into the
country to where they only have gravel roads. I'm cruising along enjoying the
scenery (wooded, creek, hills) and off to my left as I come over a hill, I see
three big deer standing in a horse pasture along with a bunch of horses.
I pull over to the edge, stop to watch them, and they decide to run. What was
so cool about it, is they ran straight for me taking giant leaps across the
field. before I knew it, they were jumping across the gravel road just a few
feet away from me and the bike! They were dark brown, with big ole' white
tails flashing in the air as they jumped.
Now to some of you guys that live in places where deer encounters are
common, this would be no big deal; but here, if we see them, it's usually at
night when we don't want to see em' on a bike. Like when they jump out in
front of you as your doing 50 down a country road coming home from somewhere!
Anyway, it was pretty cool to encounter them on their turf, up close, in the
daylight.
I also had a prety big scare on this ride. The roads were all gravel, until
I came to place where the road would wind around and cross a tollway. The
overpass part was pavement. I was having a lot of fun sliding the rear around
curves, wheeliing, and all that kinda stuff, and I got onto the pavement, went
over the tollway, and started to make the 90 degree turn back onto the gravel.
As I turned onto the gravel, I noticed a pile of loose rock at the edge the
pavement, and also that the pavement went on for a little bit after, with
rocks poured over the pavement for a ways. As I turned, I cracked the throttle
apparently a bit too hard, and the rear end came sideways real quickly. As the
bike got completely sideways, the tire gripped into the pavement under the
rock, and I knew I was about to high side it.
I felt the pressure trying to throw me off the KLR like a bucking bronco,
but thank God I was able to squeeze the bike with my legs, get on the
throttle, and hang on for dear life; It literally jerked me off the seat and I
had to push myself in the opposite direction just to stop from flying off.
Even then my feet came off the pegs, but I still gripped the bike with my
legs; because I stayed on the throttle, the bike moved, and I was able to ride
away. This was another instance where staying on the gas got me outta trouble.
After this near gravel eater, I stopped and felt my heart pounding. "That was
scary!" I though to myself. I just sat there with the realization that, had I
done one thing differently, I probably would've been picking myself up off the
ground, and checking out the damage to my KLR.
I also was again realizing the importance of wearing good protective gear. I
had my Fieldsheer suit on with armour/RF700/Technics gloves, so I probably
would've been alright if I didn't break anything going down.
As I was riding home, I kept seeing guys on Harleys/Sport bikes with shorts
on, and sun glasses and no helmets. "I wonder what would happen to them if
they went down?" I was thinking. Perish the thought.

Nice story Bill. I wish we had some roads like that around the Houston
area. The best I can find are some dirt roads that usually end up at
someones property gate. And they are flat and straight at that. It seems
that your bike has ample power. I recently bought a '96 KLR 650 with 3200
miles on it. The bike had a K&N filter with stock pipe. The previous owner
kept good written records of all maintenance done on the bike and I didn't
notice any mention of a jet change. I purchased the stock filter for the
bike and removed the mixture plug and adjusted to 2 3/4 turns out. This
eliminated the backfire. The bike just doesn't seem to have the power that
your bike apparently has. I have ridden bikes before but never a thumper
like this. I am not sure what kind of performance I should be getting from
my stock bike. I would take it to the shop but I have yet to find one that
I trust. Most of the dealer's mechanics don't work on many big bore singles
like the KLR. It would be nice to find an experienced KLR owner to test
ride my bike and tell me what I should be changing or adjusting. Maybe with
everyone signing their posts with location I could find someone close by who
could offer advice.
Sincerely,

Hey,
Sorry to have kinda been away from the list and the KLR scene, but
I've got to confess I'm in love with my new Bandit. Still have the KLR and
will NOT git rid of it, but it's kinda hard to get back in the KLR's saddle.
Anyway, I'm in Tampa, FL and today I went to meet a couple of
listers from the Bandit list in Moore Haven,FL close to lake Okechobee. My
KLR is street oriented, maybe we can choose a mid state location and meet
and compare setups, pull a couple of wheelies ("Nope officer, it wasn;t me
!! It was the guy with the blue one") and enjoy a cold Gatorade sometime ?

Hi,
Uneven wear on balancer chain and balancer sprockets is
possible, could damage engine inside if balancer chain snaps
off.

Pulled the lid off this weekend to check valve clearances. Being
accustomed to ZX-engines, the sheer size of the shims was intimidating until
I remembered that the Z1's "looked" about this size. Anyone know what other
engine uses this shim diameter?
Clearances looked good until I got to the right exhaust. "Felt
funny", ya know? Dayem! This thing will take a 45mm! Uhhh, what's that pile
of debris connected to the valve train just to the right of #2-E? Could this
be the compression release mechanism? Could this be the reason that #2-E
will swallow just about any feeler guage that is inserted? Golly, a manual
would be nice in these situations! :-)
Road-test reveals a 100MPH (indicated) top speed. This about right?
Even better, this beastie will get 50MPG! Gotta love that!
Observation: reattaching the carb will cause you to convert to

Subject: (klr650) Main Jet Revision
This weekend I grew tired of the paltry mainjet and decided to revise my
current config. I found a local dealer who carried the correct style of
jet but the largest he stocked was a #150. I installed the #150 and
wondered what my efforts were for. Acceleration was the same both off
the line and at speed, no surging or other miscreant behavior. (I run a
Uni filter w/ the airbox drilled 6-1" holes w/ "pop-in" prefilters).
So I figured "if the #150 is essentially the same as stock, why not try
opening the opening in the stock #148 that I just removed? I pulled out
my 1/16" drill, chucked it in the press and drilled the #148 out to
1/16". I have no idea what size it now is but after 200 highway miles of
test riding, plug observations, and air mixture adjustments, I have a
bike that more closely resembles the power of my brother's mid 80's
TT600, a veritable demon!
I found that dropping the carb float bowl is much easier if you change
the four screws to allen heads (cost: <$1.00 at HoeDepot). My mileage
dropped to 46 mpg highway but I also have Pelican 1550 cases hanging off
the back to help me "slice" thru the wind-mileage, what's that?. Plug
inspections revealed a nice med to dark tan, color I'm comfortable with.
Air mix screw resides 2.5 turns out as three was too rich and surging
was grossly evident at highway speeds. Opened airbox roars nicely under
acceleration and first gear roll on wheelies come soooo smooothly. I
will obviously continue to monitor the plug and exhaust soot as well as
mileage as I shudder to think I would shorten the lifespan of my beloved
beast. The other GREAT accessory I installed were the ProGrip 737 gel
grips. Should have done that 2+ yrs ago.
If anyone knows a conversion factor for the jet orfice (to English or
metric), I'd love to hear it. Curious to know what my jet size is now.
