I asked the same question about a month ago. The answer that I got back

Subject: (klr650) Introduction
I've been lurking on this list for about a month, and would now like
to introduce myself.
My name is Conall and I've been dual sporting since I was 13 (25 yrs.
now). I grew up in rural New Jersey USA and as a teenager was lucky to
have an extensive network of trails to ride on.
These trails used to part of the old steam train railroad tracks network
and would take us anywhere the regular roads did. Miles and miles of
perfectly groomed trails (railroad ties were long since removed).
Back then the local police were very tolerant of unlicensed riders and
they gave us 3 warnings for riding on the roads, before they would
impound our bikes for 30 days. Course we were only teenagers at the
time. "power walking" the bikes down the street was tolerated so we
would ride sidesaddle ready for a quick hopoff
if necessary. How times have changed, back then we were legally
restricted to the trails, now we are legally restricted to the streets
(in NJ at least). The state has bought up the right-of ways and turned
it over to hikers and equestrians.
My first bike was a (69?) Honda CL70.I bought my first KLR in '89 during
a KAW sale for $2899 (brand new). Racked up 28k miles before a cage took
me out. Black an blue but no injuries.
In '95 I bought a used "90 KLR 650 w/ 7k miles.
The bike now has approx. 50k miles -no problems.Knock on wood. Mods
include: Supertrapp exhaust, unmodified Corbin, Moose skid plate,
Progressive fork srings, TOL luggage plate and Top-of-line Luggage bag,
most Excellant Driveline Hwy pegs + side racks, Riderwearhouse Dry Bags,
Kissan Technologies headlight modulator, Clearview +7 windscreen,
progrip gel grips and lexan 'armor' applied to headlight and taillight
lenses.
I ride everyday and this year have done my share of riding in the rain(
El nino). I like IRC GP 110's but am using Avon Gripsters 'cause the
GP-110's were only lasting 5-6 months.
Gripsters are a little better value IMHO.
Tips I can make would be ,if legal in your area, get yourself a
headlight modulator.I do a lot of lane sharing and people really seem
to take notice of your bike sooner than they would if you didn't have
one.
Also if taking your bike in for service, don't assume your dealer knows
how to adjust a chain. Always doublecheck the chain tension with the
suspension loaded. I damaged a countershaft sprocket retainer because
the chain was too tight. Always doublecheck your chain tension if
somebody else adjusts it. No brainer I know, but sometimes people get
rushed.
Get the best protective gear you can find. I have a Motosport DIFI
jacket w/ body armor.
Am looking at the Darien pants by aerostitch next.
What I have found is Without a doubt Gino's KLR 650 DS Newsletter is the
best source of info available anywhwere for the KLR 650 and is highly
recommended. I have all the back issues and it has saved me tons of time
and money.
I live in the SF CA Bay area and my dream trip would be to Alaska and/or
Baja and of course Moab- next year.
Thanks to the people who adminster this list and thanks for the
bandwidth. yeah i know it was long.
Conall P.S. I am on the digestified list so please contact me directly
if you wish.

IT'S CALLED SAENG/TA EDGING AND IS USED TO EXPAND THE AIR ENVELOPE ABOVE
AND AROUND THE SHIELD BY 2-3 INCHES. I USE IT ON A CLEARVIEW +7 AND AT
6'1" TALL THE AIR IS OVER MY HELMET. ONLY DOWNSIDE IS COST- $10/foot.

I ended up cutting three inches off mine due to this exact problem. I
didn't know which size to buy when I bought it, but I did know that it
was much easier to make a taller windshield shorter than visa versa.
Works great now.

Finally got my SO out for a double-up ride. She has been pouting since I
sold my CX-500 (her favorite). She came away singing the praises of the
KLR. She claimed she was pretty comfortable on the stock seat but missed
having a back rest. I told her that we could rig that with a GIVI tailbag
but the pad would come right to the edge of the seat (right?). She said
that she was cheating a bit and resting over the edge of the seat on the
rack. I said another way to go was to get a gel seat pad to put on the rack
there but no backrest. The other thing she mentioned was the passenger pegs
were not long enough and wondered if someone made an extended set. I said I
doubted it but that we could probably make some ourselves (haven't had the
time to look at them yet). I realized that I will have to adjust the spring
as we really sagged (I have the rear shock on 1 for commuting and
minimizing the height). I have a Progressive shock on order with Dual Star
so I imagine that problem is going to go away soon.
Any riders out there with 2-up experience and advice on the KLR. Vic and
Kathleen? Others?
Thanks,
Kurt

Kurt,
I've put significant miles on my '98 with my wife and I both aboard. We tip
the scales at about 375 pounds. I am not allowed to say any more than that on
pain of death. My wife also indicates that she edges onto the rack. We have
tried a couple of things , both of which work ok. First we have added to our
storage by attaching a dry bag (about 2500 inches) with some of our stuff in
it to the rack. She says this provides good support. The other item we use is
a small Igloo cooler when we go picniking. The size that holds a 6-pack. Held
on by tie-downs it provides more support but less cushion. Our shock is on the
2 setting. Both of these options provide her with enough support so she can
ride about 100 miles without a stop.

Subject: (klr650) New Dunlop Tires
Hi all,
Just for anyone who is looking for tires Dunlop has come out with a
replacement for their Trailmax tires. Its called D604 and is a radial
tire. I can scan a pic of it from a magazine if anyone wants to see the
tread pattern. I don't know what it costs.
I was looking at visiting the states to pick up some tires, but I want to
see if they are generally cheaper than Canada. Can someone price out a set
of Michelin T66 tires at their local bike shop? In Canada the best price
I've got was about $210 US for a set front & back.
Cheers,

Subject: (klr650) Dual Star long post...
WARNING LONG POST TO FOLLOW:
Had a long talk with Mike Walburn at Dual Star last week and
a number of tips and sidebars emerged. Thought I would share
them with the list.
Tips:
Changing Tires:
1. Dual Star makes a set of rim protectors for carrying in
your tool kit. I ordered a set. Mike pointed out that saving
the rim from cosmetic damage is but one of the concerns.
Perhaps more important than cosmetic damage is that if you
use steel tire irons w/o protection it is likely that
aluminum shavings will find their way into the tire casing
and may cause rubbing and splintering that will lead to a
tube failure in short order.
2. Think of every part of the bike and your gear as a
potential tool when you are afield. So, if you are looking
for a way to break the bead on a tough rear tire lay the
tire under your buddy's side stand and use the side stand as
a lever. Even get on the passenger peg if you have to.
Rim Locks and Balancing:
1. Mike believes that rim locks are a must on front and
back. He points out that if your brakes are doing their job
that braking force alone can cause the tube to rip at the
valve stem.
2. With rim locks forget about computer balancing your rims.
Dual Star makes spoke weights for the front and back rims.
They recommend you put 3 11/2 ounce weights on the rear on
spokes adjoining one another exactly opposite the rim lock
and 3 1 ounce weights on the front opposite the rim lock.
W/O balancing you will be looking at much greater wear on
the tires but, more importantly, on the suspension.
SuperTrapp and Cobra Exhaust Silencers:
1. Mike is not a fan of Cobra exhausts because his
experience has been that the silencer come apart internally.
2. With SuperTrapp it is absolutely important to use their
anti-seizing lube on every part that is being assembled.
This includes all screws, bolts and discs. Further, the
silencer needs to be disassembled once a year and re-lubed
with anti-seize. He points out the tremendous heat that is
generated and the toll it can take on exhaust silencer
parts.
Sidebars:
Dual Star's Commitment to KLR:
1. I asked Mike whether they had sent out the batch of
centerstands promised for late April. Mike said that the
batch is delayed due to some unavoidable mixups in the
tubing that was supplied.
2. Mike expressed regret and frustration on this point. He
said he and Carrie suffer greatly when they disappoint
customers and are in a position where customers
understandably vent. At times he wonders if it is worth it
to attempt to provide KLR parts.
3. I told Mike that I think it is a matter of educating
customers what the company is facing and for customers to
adjust their expectations. In my case, if I know that an
after market part is only available from one source and it
is not a high volume item I am more than willing to be
patient. Others may feel differently. But the truth is that
if Dual Star and Driveline and Five Star stop making
aftermarket parts for these bikes because it is too much of
a headache it will be the bike owners loss.
4. He is hoping that they can begin shipping in two to three
weeks. For anyone wondering if the wait is worth it I would
advise patience, the Dual Star stand is a work of art and
works very well. For those who already have the stand and
are experiencing difficulty with getting the bike pulled up
on it make sure your front fork tubes are level with the top
caps. If the tubes are up in the clamps and you want to keep
it that way you should lower the rear of the bike and use a
center stand for the lowering kit.
5. Mike is putting the finishing touches on a set of clear
tank protectors and I can give a report on those in a few
days. They also are going to look at producing a wrench for
the left front axle nut. They have a rear axle nut that
eliminates the need for a cotter pin.
6. I pointed out to Mike that w/o a catalog most of us are
operating in the blind as to what Dual Star offers...he
said, I know I know...
I offer these posts with the idea of passing on info and
encouraging healthy exchange and debate. I have no
affiliation or special interest in Dual Star or any other
vendor...

In the Dennis Kirk catalog (located in MN, 1-800-328-9280) the T66 and T66X
are priced as follows (US):
130/80HR-17 150.99
140/80RR-17 154.99
150/70RR-17 158.99
100/90RR-19 123.99
110/80RR-19 131.99
90/90H-21 123.99
These are out of '97 catalog, but prices are pretty static, but give them a
call. All of these are radials except for 21 incher, it's a bia tire.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Kurt. That was great info. The clear tank, and rim
protectors sound like must haves for my bike. But I'll have to
pass on the rim locks. I'm not that aggressive on a klr. For me
anyway, adding a pound 'unsprung' is not worth the deteriorated
wear, and handling to those big gyroscopes fore and aft.
Running a business is fraught with unexpected delays.
Unless I receive lousy service or a defective product,
I go with the flow.
With all the disclaimers of late, I guess it's time to come
clean. I own no stock in any of the vendors I've discussed.
However, I recently produced the catalogs and data sheets
for Pelican Products, but I have no first hand experience of
their use on a klr.

You could see the D604 and the whole lot of other tyres at:
http://www.sharples.com/doffroad.htm
It's a UK site though so it could be a bit slow. They've got the pictures
of the tyres and sizes but not much other information.

Well, that is an interesting question that I know has been kicked around out
here in the past. "Supposedly" it works ok to mix these, but I'm not that
sure except that you really have no choice and I can't believe that a big
manufacturer would do this if it didn't work what with liability issues. I
would like to talk to someone that has done it before I would try it......
Any takers??

My riding buddy just bought a new 98 Suzuki DR 350. I came stock with a Dunlop
"604's" front and rear. After 1000 miles of 80% road / 20% gravel, the rear is
showing quite alot of wear. Seems like a pretty aggressive tread pattern for
longevity on the road. He says it works pretty good in gravel and light mud
situations.......FYI Todd

No. The Tengai has special mounts welded into the front down tube to
accomodate the bash plate. I person could fabricate the mounts, though and
then it would fit.

Today I went into Discount Tire Warehouse shopping for a new
rear tire, (4900 miles on the stock Dunlop), and sitting on a shelf
was a BMW helmet that had been returned. (Not a scratch on it).
It has the chin gaurd that flips up, with integral wind dam. It
was on sale for $79.00!!! It also carried a DOT sticker.
Which model wasn't DOT?
It was too snug for my fat head, but Joan's checking it out tomorrow.

I stood over my dealer's shoulder when he looked up the part#s.
It didn't look like there was any alternative for my '96 A10.

Subject: (klr650) New KLR Owner's Manual
Hello All,
Picked up my new KLR-A12 yesterday...boy what a lot of fun. I know the
dirt-bike guys say they're heavy, but for a street-bike guy it's light
as a feather! Made me feel like a kid again (worth the money just for
that). Now if I can just endure the break-in period. One question:
When I asked about the owner's manual he dug around in the back for a
couple of minutes and gave me an A9 manual set. Is there any difference
in the manuals or specs that would warrant me bugging them for the A12
manual? Or maybe the manuals haven't changed since '95? Want to keep
them honest without being a nuisance.

Michael,
Don't know of any supplement for 96-98. I'm thinking that there should be,
at least, a service bulletin update to cover the flywheel and clutch
changes. The changes don't seem significant enough to warrant full
re-publication of a new supplement. I'll poke around.
BTW, I'm a couple of weeks away from deciding about Copper Canyon. Is this
of interest to you?

Geoff, congrats on the great new bike:-) my A10 ('96) came
with a pocket sized owner's manual, with a specific part#
for the A10 model. I don't know if there are any changes from
'95, but it has info that is not covered in the supplemental
service manual, which covers '87 thru '95. Because of the
changes to the engine starting in '96, I'm hoping that Kawa has
put something out to cover this by the time I need to split my
case. Hope is a good thing......right?

Geoff, are you talking about an owner's manual or shop
manual? In either case, I don't think there has been any
change.

Subject: (klr650) Dual Star Company
To all on the KLR LIST:
One of the primary functions of the Internet is to quickly distribute
information - both positive and negative. The beauty of the Web is to
help consumers make good choices and to encourage competition and
productivity.
The purpose of this posting is to inform the members of the LIST about
one of the venders we have been looking to for new products for
Adventure touring and the KLR650 bike in particular.
Dual Star started out with a great deal of promise of things to come.
Unfortunately, my personal experience with this company indicates the
promise is not being fulfilled!
At the Moab Rally I was interested in purchasing a very nice "fanny"
pack. I was told the pack was "spoken for" and thus could not be sold.
I have to admit I briefly thought "if it is spoken for why is it here
and not being delivered?"
When I returned home from the rally I called Dual Star and ordered a
bicycle pump for use in emergency roadside tire repair. I was not told
at the time I ordered that they had no pumps to ship! If I had not
called yesterday (May12,1998) to inquire about another product I would
never have known the pump was not on it's way!
I inquired about a mount for my GPS III and was told they had one in
stock but that it was "spoken For!" Theres that phrase again. Again I
wondered, "if it was spoken for why was it not being shipped?"
I was told they would check on it though and call me back. That was 22
hours ago!
It is my opinion that Dual Star has an inventory problem! Of three
items I tried to order one was not available and two were "spoken for!"
I know that Dual Star has had a great problem in delivery of their
center stands for KLRs. I have received a number of emails from KLR
LIST people as well as people who had seen The Dual Star center stand
reviewed and promoted on the KLR Owners Group Web Page. At the Moab
Rally they had only one and it was not for sale - only a demo.
Back to the purpose of this posting. I feel one should be very careful
when ordering from Dual Star! be sure to ask if the product you are
calling about is in stock and "ready to ship." Be sure it is not only
in stock but also ask if it will be shipped as it could be "spoken for!"
In closing, I want to make it clear to all that I am not speaking for
the KLR News Letter or Web Page. I am posting this message as an
individual who is simply passing on information of interest to members
of the KLR LIST. After all, this is what the WWW is for - information!

Subject: Re: (klr650) Moab98 Article
To Bill Haycock, and all other listers:
In his excellent article about Moab, Bill writes about numerous encounters
with mountain bikers, and trail etiquette. As an avid mountain biker, and
also a motorcyclist, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill
for his attitude, and make some things known to dual-sporters, to foster
friendship between mountain bikers and motorcyclists throughout the US.
We share the same trails. It's our attitudes towards each other that will
make or break the relationship. If we are courteous and understand each
other's needs, the trails will stay open for all to enjoy. When you see
some mountain bikers out on the trail, stop and say hello. Ask about their
bike, or good trails to ride. They will appreciate the gesture. If you
see a biker with mechanical trouble, please ask if he or she needs
assistance. Keep the dust down if possible. Don't intentionally damage
the trail by skidding or power sliding. Try not to race by or hog the
trail. These acts leave lasting impressions that lead to complaints.
These trails were here long before the mountain bike existed, and were
made by jeepers and motorcyclists. Yet they are there for everyone to
enjoy. Remember that we are brothers and sisters, and that the mountain
bikers are fighting for trail access too. Attitude is everything, and
sharing is fun.
Thanks for the bandwidth.
