I am running a tubeless version of the Metzeler Enduro 3, with a tube installed, with no problems. According to Metzeler, this is an acceptable proceedure. But you've definitely got to have the tube in. There is a "tube-type" version of this tire also, but I don't know what the difference is.

Great Road. Lot's of cops usually on holiday weekends. See any?
Driving into the area from the west to Fontana on 129 (in the curvy section going up the mountain) I got behind a cop who was kind enough to pull off the road which allowed me to pick up my pace. Unfortunately, I had all my gear on the bike for this initial run. The police presence was pretty
minimal considering the hundreds of bikes.
I stayed at the Fontana Peppertree campground (site of the infamous BMW rally fiasco) but was not treated to the police helicopter buzzing the place while blaring the "Cops" theme song. Oh well, maybe next time.
The KLR should be a wonderful bike to run the Gap on. I've never had
my KLR to DG, always opting for the sport bike instead. The road is
so tight, it should be easy to keep up with inexperienced
sportbikers, which DG attracts in droves.
That's accurate. I could keep up with the slower sport bikers--and even experienced ones as long as they didn't run WFO on the short straights--much to their consternation. I had just put on a new pair of IRC GP110s. This was my first visit and the road lives up to its reputation.
Did you run Thunder Road while you were there?
Didn't get to that one.
How about back roads? Any good unimproved roads you can recommend in
that area?
I was riding with a buddy on a HD so I didn't get off road. A great non-famous road is 28S south of 74/19. Real curvy--but not as tight as Deal's Gap 129--with good visibility around the curves and an awesome ride through/view of a gorge just north of Highland.

You probably already know this but Suchess, GA is not far from that area
and has a great cycle campground and area map for on/off road. Check

Jeff,
Mine's going to the shop on Monday for a couple of things, an oil leak
on the bottom right case being one of them. I've assumed it was the
pressure tap plug as well and the dealer's committed to put a new o-ring
in and see, but low and behold, he said that this spring he'd already
replaced 3 right side cover gaskets on KLR's!!!! I didn't know there
were that many in Maine. Consequently he's putting a gasket in as well.
So according the my dealer, this is typical.

Hello Webmaster,
I'm about to pick up a '95 KLR650 for a song ($1200). It is
mechanically sound but has been dropped a few times. I don't know if
you are familiar with Dennis Kirk - they are a major supplier of
motorcycle parts. I was disappointed to find very little parts offered
in their catalog for the KLR but many parts for the KLX. Do you know
the major differences in these models or a good place I can order
replacement parts (side covers, blinkers, etc.) for my KLR. Please
keep in mind this is a budget project. I can't see riding down to the
local Kawasaki dealer and paying their outrageous prices. Any input or
experience you can pass my way would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Subject: (klr650) Drilling holes in Plastic and Painted surfaces
Date: 23 Jun 1998 07:09:24 -0600
Kathleen, Apply a couple of strips of masking tape to protect to area around where the hole will be drilled. Mark the hole to be drilled on the tape. You may put a center punch mark in the tape it works. The tape keeps the drill from running around on the fender avoiding unwanted scratches. Good Luck !
Every time I hear of a bike quiting I want to ask about the fuel filter, one of the most overlooked trouble spots on a bike or car. Is there a good fuel filter on the KLR ? I dont remember seeing one on my 1988. You had better know the fuel filter is good on a BMW.
