Public speaking is not my forte, so we may get Chip, the Moab native. By the way, I'm planning on bringing a deck of cards. Any poker players out there? How about dart throwers?

Forgot to add to my post about the ride around the Hood Canal Sat.
I stopped at Bremerton WA and noticed the USS Turner Joy DD 951. I had been meaning to tour this ship given to the city in 1988 (?) and refurbished to nearly perfect condition by the city and historical museum society. Now it is available to tour thru.
For you old salts and naval historians you know it is one of the two (USS Maddox the other I recall) that was 'fired' upon by the North Vietnam in the Bay of Tonkin. This was the incident that Prez Johnson used to justify the bombing from the aircraft carriers and further escalation of the 'conflict'. God rest the souls who paid the price of war.
I was on the previous class, DD 805 USS Chevalier and it's sister ship DD 806 USS Higbee on the west coast late 69 and early '70's. Similar as destoyers but different the way the ship is layed out.
I was able to go down into the main deck, 01 deck, bridge, signal deck, engine rooms, berthing, mess hall etc.
I leaned up against the desk used by the quatermaster of the watch in the bridge and thanked god I was just touring. :+)

I read a report on that helmet in the MOA (BMW magazine) and the guy who wrote said he loved it. I would think the seam right down the center of the chin bar would compromise the integrity, but maybe it has some real good latches. Anway, the said it fit real good and that the frontal area did not increase when opened, as with the Shoei, Nolan and Bieffe. MAybe Kurt would fund a review of one.

It sucks that the KLX got the boot! Deciding to buy a 4-stroke dual sport was something I only recently decided to do, and prior to that I had NO interest in a ANYTHING with only two wheels weighing over 250 pounds. When the thumper bug hit me about this time last year, my "research" led me to conclude that the KLR was the bike for me (MOST of which came from this list!). Retrospectively, the bike for me ACTUALLY is the KLX. Just my luck...it's no longer produced. I love my KLR, but really do need it to be more of an off-road ride. I suppose the answer is to start pouring $ into it and see what I can do. The one think I keep reminding myself is that I would have to buy A LOT of goodies for it before even approaching the price of a Euro bike...
Finally, I moved out of the old neighborhood to another one across town over the weekend. Moved everything except the KLR. Went back to get it yesterday. After it (and I!) were both warm, we eased down into the street and pulled away. Picked up the front wheel and pulled a wheelie all the way up the street at full honk for about 300 yards! For some reason, I experienced some strange satisfaction with my defiant parting act... (I hope I don't turn into one of those "smart-assed bikers" without a helment on an open-piped Harley.)

I'm partial to Hear-O's sold at most Walgreens and other places. A tapered plug that fits those of us with small ear canals better and remain comfortable for long periods of time. I remember using a pair for almost 9 hours without removing them.
I use earplugs almost anytime I get on a motorcycle and bicycle(especially when riding into a headwind) anymore.

I finally have had a chance to catch on reading some of the latest motorcycle rags. Last night I read the article in the latest MCN about the guy with the CBR900RR with 240K miles (or something like that). This confirms what I have been thinking over the past few months. The less work you do on a bike the longer it will last. He used the cheapest oil, checked valves once every 100K miles(whether they needed it or not), has never open the carbs, put used tires on it, etc... The bike has been on the track, done commuting and touring.
This is great since I can't remember the last time I lubed my chain or checked tire pressure. My last oil change was sometime last spring and I haven't washed the bike in well over a year. I feel better already.

Kurt is right here. If you're not ordering a Harley or BMW seat from Corbin, you can expect a long painful process of getting the seat the way you want it. It is worth it though once you get the modified one.
The travelcade was designed more for off-road riding and does not have the width of the modified Corbin, yet it is still an improvement over stock, but not really worth the extra bucks.
Sargent builds seats to suit on your existing seat pan. Their quality is excellent as is their customer service. Stay away from their Super Cell foam as the main component of your new seat as it is very firm and does not break in as well as Corbin does. They do sell a less dense foam, but I cannot remember the name of it.

On more thing about seats. We are approaching the busiest time of year for seat orders. Starting in early March and through June, the time it takes to get a custom seat at least doubles, sometimes triples with most if not all of the seat companies. I wouldn't think about it too long.

Calm down, Bogdan. IMHO the KLR engine will last longer than any of us will care to own the bike, even with marginal maintenance. Not to diminish the contributions of Elden Carl, I just don't see the need for all of the quirky maintenance schemes, even the infamous above the sight glass oil level.

Actually the rumor of KLX's available came from me. Tho if you consider that I saw them at two different dealers in the Puget Sound I would insist 'that warn't no rumor'
They had a '96 'R' model at one and a 'C' model at another. 'That' was last summer. No idea of availability now but will check next time I get to either shop.
As far as bringing back a motor to life after 4 yrs. I bought my '93 'R' in '98 with so little miles there was hardly a radius wear on the rear knobbie. Like new, no kidding. After 1000 kick starts and draining bad gas and refueling with fresh it started fine. All that kick starting hopefully pushed some oil thru and splashed lubed the bottom end some.
I did 2 1/2 hrs at Belfair Sat with the KLX. I had just installed a new chainset. Stock is 14/49 so I went with 14/51 as it was a little tall geared for woods/trail. Wished I had gone 14/53 now. Will try a 13 tooth front I guess as I don't get into 2nd gear but half the time. Ok I am not a hottie rider!.
KLR content, getting it ready for Mexico. Gonna try a Kenda 270 rear tire for a 50/50 tire.
Happy thumping!

A viable alternative to the KLX is the MuZ Bahgira. There are plenty of these floating around at shops that sell MuZ (usually BMW and Triumph dealers). It is about the same weight and has the most excellent Yamaha 660 engine.

Nolan makes some great helmets which are often overlooked by the snell-snobs because they have only a DOT rating. Having owned two of their helmets, I must say they are superb quality, great fit and excellent value.

You have to know Kurt to understand his message, but that's another long e-mail (g). I found the lowering links to be a great improvement for the street going KLR . I had mine on for about 6 months or so and noticed better handling, Although I did bottom the bike more frequently. I switched back only because I'm used to tall bikes like the KLR and wanted the extra ground clearance.
What it really comes down to is you do what you have to do to ride.

Yep, it is nice. I was there lusting at the W650 a little earlier. If you haven't seen a W650, go by your dealership and see one. They are way cool. Even down to the round master brake cylinder and vintage looking tires.

Subject: (klr650) It will never happen to me (nklr)
Date: 21 Feb 2000 09:34:11 EST
Greetings. Just thought I would share my weekend experiences with those of you who enjoy outdoor activities and sports like I do, especially in spring. This weekend I had the great pleasure of spending the night in the hospital with extreme hypothermia. A truly memorable - and sometimes unmemborable- experience. I was participating in the Mt Taylor Winter Quadrathlon, and event I have soloed the past 4 years. The weather was the mildest it had ever been for the event and that is what did me in. I failed to drink enough fluids in the early stages of the race and by the time I reached the windy, snow capped summit of the moutain, I was dehydrated and well on my way into hypothermia. Fortunately course officials saw the signs and stopped me at the next check point, at which I could not remember my name and my speach was slow and slurred.
I'm very experienced in outdoor winter sports, I'm in very good physical condition and have considered myself wise to preventing just this situtation. So just thought I'd let you know that, yes, it can happen to you.

Sorry Arne, hate to break this to you, but I remembered food first, then my family, my bikes and so on. Just before I remembered Tinky Winky and you, I recalled I had to call the septic pumper.

The LED will draw less power and is resistant to vibration damage unlike a regular bulb. Someone on the list has a helmet mounted brake light, but I'm not sure how that works. When using saddle bags or a top case, be sure you turn signals and brake light are visible from all angles. I moved my turn signals to the back of my rack using L brackets and adding about 6" of wire to the turn signal wires.
Last but not least, buy a Conspicuity Vest and wear it around town. Mine has the reflective hiViz yellow stripes. Works just as well as the pricey Aerostich HiViz Darien and is 1/100th the cost.

I like the stock peg placement, but I'm short at 5'10". You'd a thought that the easily accessible mount points of the foot pegs would have had one of our renegade fabricators making adjustable footpeg mounting plates by now... Tim, Arne, Mike?

I just replaced the chainset on the KLX including a X ring chain from RK. Compared to the worn one it is of course better... like it stays on the rear sprocket..:+) Seems stiff..harder to push as there is more friction..of course the original was not an O ring type. most of my commuting on city streets, I decided that the VFR was the one to
go. I've found that the KLR is superior to the VFR for most aspects of
city-riding including, lane-splitting, soaking up potholes, hopping curbs,
climbing steep hills, and being ignored by cops (red of the VFR was a
magnet). <<
Well, I don't have a VFR, but I do have a ZRX, and I must say that the ZRX has displaced my KLR for most of my riding needs. I find the power, handling and monster breaks to be more desireable for my commutes. Don't get me wrong, the KLR is still by and large the most versatile machine in my garage, but I'm addicted to the performance edge of the ZRX. If I had to pick between the two, of course it would be the KLR because it could do more, but I would do everything I could not to have to choose.

1/2qt every hundred miles is on the excessive side if you ask me. You would notice something going on. Have you checked the spark plug for fouling? How many miles are on the bike? On the bright side, you only need to change your filter every now and then since you essetially replace the oil every 500 miles.

I'm going on 3 years with my Kilimanjaro and it has held up well, despite some fading and a crash. I even washed it once! I liked the Motoport Canyon a lot, but every time I tried to order one, they were always back ordered, so I gave up. I have a Motoport Atlas winter suit and it is wonderful.

That's right. I've said it all along. The KLR650 is the best dual sport in the world. The DR350 is the best trail bike in the world and the Kawasaki ZRX1100 is the best sport bike in the world too.
Come to think of it, the Chevy 3/4 ton 4X4 is the best pickup in the world too.

Looks like a very tempting proposition with a set of 50/50 street/dirt tyres. The only big worry is engine durability, those things are rated in hours not thousands of miles ;- )
I cannot believe how cheap the plastics look on the Yamaha off road bikes.

Yes the KLR would be the one should I ever have to make the decision of only having one bike. This surprises me.
After a two hour ride prior to work today (2nd shift guy) I was able to let my wrist twist! I break my machines in graduallu and somewhat slow. After 2400 miles it was time to see what it could do. This bike can really corner! At least up tp 85 mph I feel confident. I can corner mich faster than the Concours in the same corner. 270 # difference will do that! I f I keep on the throttle the 60 hp diff is not as noticeable.
This is a confession of a guy who loves his Concours. I still prefer it (Concours) for any distance and superior weather protection.

I keep trying to find 6th gear, Big K should add one if they could find room. And 5 more horsies and lbft then it would be perfect in mine eyes. :+)
This bike can really corner. I will be able to outcorner a few of my Concours friends with the KLR at least up to 85 mph in the tight twisties. 270# difference will do that.
I added a tail bag a few weeks ago. From JC Whitney. Made by Covercraft. Well made 500 Cordura backed with poly so 99% waterproof and with the rain cover total I guess. Four side pockets with zippers and rain flaps. Just big enuf to fit my full face helmet in. I wanted to use it with the KLX too and be able to fit tent/sleeping bag-pag between it and me on both bikes. It will be tested on the Mexico trip next month. Maybe I will be tested too?
I will be installing a Kenda 270 rear before next months trip. I have heard good reports on this 50/50 tire. Noisy I have also heard but that is another reason to use earplugs eh?
Still need to do the main fuse r&r with the blade type, install the Acerbis Pro Rally handguards .. and ..
Yes I am fortunate to have a stable of bikes that fit the various riding I like. Should I have to choose and only have one... the KLR hands down. This from a Concours lover. I wanted an adventure touring bike...this is it IMO.

Yeah Bill. I bought the T500 two summers ago. I had one a '68 model first year of US import in '70 when a sailor in San Diego. Geeze we complain about vibration today? This bike will vibrate/buzz the fillings out of your teeth! I has OK power now but was a rocket in it's time. Pogo sticks..4" suspension with little dampening. Headlight..hell more like a candle maybe..
Still brings back memories when I ride it but usually for a 30-50 mile spin..that is enuf.

Yeah Mark. Got one on the KLX650R dirt model. Pretty easy as the bike has a lighting coil already. Nice to be able to head up the road to the next trail legally. Have DOT knobbies so do not do much pavement.
As far as the engine durability goes I believe that the off road use is harder on the engine than the pavement. 30 miles of trails is like 300 miles of pavement as far as wear and tear. IMO of course. :+)

I do ride aggressively and only on the local canyon roads. I suppose chasing after my sports bike compatriots might have something to do with it. I am by no means a super rider so I have to try real hard to keep up. I suspect my local roads are just about as brutal to tyres as you can get without straying from the pavement but In my whole life of owning bikes I have never got more than 3000 out of a back tyre. 6000 is pretty impressive.
When you realize It aint the bike thats holding you back :
This weekend some hero overtook me on a hairpin turn with his knee down and proceeded to leave me for dead (I was trying too). The scary thing was that he was on a battered XR600 !

Mostly caters to the 4 wheeler and "personal water craft" crowd (i.e. rednecks) around here. NO clothing at all and just a few cheap helments. The dealership where I bought my bike does better, but selection is slim. I WANT a jacket, but want to see and touch it before spending over $200! I bought a helmet mail order and it wasn't what I expected, nor does it fit correctly. I'm actually considering making a trip to visit a friend who just moved to Colorado Springs so I can go to MAW's showroom to get a new helmet and jacket! I need a tire, but WHERE can I go to look at some? Nowhere! How annoying...

I am using the Gerbing quilted jacket, socks and gloves. It is wonderful to be warm while extending my riding season to 12 months lees a couple weeks of snowfall. Did not even get the weeks of snowfall this year. :+)
I upgraded to the modulated thermostat on the Concours and installed the earlier purchased wiring with manual rocker switch to the KLR. I do make sure is is switched off at low rpm especially at stoplights. Have not had a problem with a low battery so far since I got the KLR in OCT 99. The battery water level has not lowered either. If it was seriously discharging I would think the battery may use water in the higher charging cycles.?
I would like to use a higher wattage headlight but this would further tax the system and not sure what the result would be.
Having the stator rewound would improve the electron availability but the pocketbook is getting thin lately with all the upgrades and addition I have already done.

I know what you mean, you really want to feel the reason you bought this thing...
But, diligence today will pay tomorrow!
My salvation was after I hit the 500 mark (a two day event in my case): I noted the rpm limits and their respective distances and broke it up into "quarters" at 25% of the next distance step I would increase my rpm limits 25%, half way to the next step, I increased my rpm limits 50% and so on. It made the whole process less mindless and more interesting. I also got to increase my road speed.
My method may not fit with Kawasaki's recommendations, but I took the chance. I have ALWAYS broke in fresh motors this way, I think gradual is better than sudden. Also, watch long idle periods, holding a one rpm for long periods of time/distance, etc. Really more damaging than a sprint into redland once in a while.
