Subject: [irr-ed] Winter issue deadline
Date: 27 Nov 2001 01:26:08 -0700
Hello, Irreantum editors. This is your reminder that finalized text for the
winter issue is due on December 15th.
The autumn issue is quite far behind schedule but will be out very soon,
hopefully no later than winter solstice so technically it will still be the
autumn issue. I am still committed to getting us back on schedule.
We ended up devoting the entire issue to Eugene England, with none of our
other material. As a result, anything you sent for autumn was not included.
On our cover we will have Brady Udall, with an interview (already in hand)
and a chapter or two excerpted from his recent _Edgar Mint_.
For Jana and Marny, you will have to compress two issues of reviews and
AML-List Highlights into one issue. (The same is also true for me on the
Mormon Literary News department I put together.) I don't mind if you submit
a little bit more than you usually would for one issue, but please don't
pile two full issues of material on us. I will delete the file you
originally sent for autumn and await a fresh, new file with any changes,
additions, or deletions for the winter issue.
Tory, for your department I have the following:
Companions, by Darlene Young
Who Needs Salt Lake? by Bill Caudle
[It would be nice to have 1-2 more fiction pieces]
Todd, for your "essay" or "nonfiction" department I have:
My Innisfree, Camille Traveller Bell
[It would be nice to also get a piece of literary
criticism/reportage/analysis for the winter issue. I think we should strive
to have at least one piece of memoir/creative nonfiction and one literary
criticism/reportage/analysis essay in each issue. I still think we should
have one editor dedicated to memoir/creative nonfiction and another editor
dedicated to literary criticism/reportage/analysis. I know you, me, and
Gideon have chatted about this, but the division of labor and responsibility
remains quite nebulous in my mind, and I don't think the magazine is
handling the nonfiction area well yet.]
Please keep in touch and let me know of any problems and concerns ASAP.
Otherwise I will assume you are on target for the deadline. I apologize for
the autumn situation, but it was a special circumstance and quite worthwhile
to do what we did (I should say what Gideon did, since he put the whole
thing together).
Actually, at this point even just a little e-mail of "Yes, I'm still here
and got your message" would be great from everybody. Thanks!
Chris Bigelow

Chris, et al.
I got the message and I agree with you about the division of labor. My
tendancy would be to divide things along the following lines:
Gideon: criticism
Todd: memoir
I'm really a creative writer and Gideon is a literary scholar/critic,
so that division seems to make a bit more sense to me, though we could
alternate. I'm sure Gideon and I could discuss this on the side.
Those of you who have been on the list lately will be aware of what I'd
like to propose for additions to the non-fiction for this issue.
I'd like to have Chris B. and Scott Parkin submit their long and
excellent posts on the chagrins of being LDS writers as essays this time
around. I think that they are both important for Mormon letters.
I'd like you all to let me know what you think about this. If I get a
thumbs up, I'll put it to those people independantly and then edit the
essays as if they had come over the transom (although they'd already
have some measure of approval already).
Also what happened with any revisions from that Alan Mitchell
"jerimiad" on hooking up with Dutcher?

On division of labor, I don't see a problem in both Todd and I looking
at personal essays/memoir. I really do want to launch a Life Writing
section of Irreantum and actively build our creative nonfiction. Of
course I hope to work with Todd on that. (By the way, I have some great
leads on several personal essays right now--some students, some contest
winners from the Mayhew this past year, some veterans narratives from
the Saints at War BYU project)
I don't object to our getting an additional person to help promote more
literary criticism, if that's what you were thinking. Maybe we can
bring Neila partially on board.
As for Alan Mitchell's piece, it hangs in limbo because we haven't heard
from Ed Snow (as far as I know, he just said he wanted to look it over).
Alan has since contacted me and I gave him partial feedback (concerns
over it sounding like whining). I think he's a little discouraged and we
ought to at least let him know if we think it is viable with revision.
We certainly could link it to Scott's piece and feature writers angst.
Or, it can come in as humor. Ed? Todd?

I've had a thought here about what might be a reasonable division of
labor.
I'm more interested in creative non-fiction, but not necessarily
memoir. And I'm also interested in literary criticism to a certain
extent.
I too want to see the creative non-fiction grow, and I am excited to
see some of the stuff that Gideon has procured. I think those are really
exciting. Solicitation seems to be the best way to get material right
now.
I do think that adding someone right now would make things a little
more difficult to manage, but in the future, that might be a good idea.
I think Gideon and I can chat for a while and then see what we come up
with.
Gideon, perhaps you could let Mitchell know that we're still
entertaining using his piece. I think the idea of using it for a
Rameumpton piece is a good idea.
I'll ask Scott about the piece this afternoon unless I am stopped.

Sorry I've been out of touch.
I liked the "Dutcher and Me" piece. It's funny enough. There are some
minor tone consistency issues. It's a little long for Rameumptom. I
haven't seen Todd's edits, but I'm sure they're fine. If you want to run
it in Rameumptom, that's fine too.

Well, Ed, you're the one who decides on Rameumptom. If you don't have =
anything better or more appropriate (shorter), you can claim it. Otherwise,=
tell us you want to pass, and the essay guys can decide if and how they =
want it for an essay.

I don't have any thing else unless I use something of my own with a
pseudonym. I think it's good stuff, but not really a Rameumptom piece.
I'll pass to the essay people.

Please do contact Alan Mitchell, Todd, and try to give him more specific
recommendations for edits than what I told him (which was simply the
concern about sounding too whiny). I don't know if Ed wants to
contribute any suggested edits, but you take the lead, Todd.
