Frank,
I will differ with you. This is one of the examples when true stories
and real history are just as good as the made up ones. So what if the
exciting, gory details which we have always thought of as main pieces
of a story is wrong? What about the rest of this man's life? Do we just say
that it is not important and not fit for a book now? No. John still lived
in a great
time and had alot of exciting adventures which we could only dream about.
While the two books on which his legend is based on are not historical
truth,
they do tell about a man who evidently stood out in the crowd. Was he
really any different than other guys in the peroid? Maybe not. I fell that
every
one who lived in the west during "precivilization" had a great story to
tell.
This does mean that some of our heros, big guides and adventurers might
be knocked down a level or two, but others take their place. People like:
John Smith, Joseph Bijeau or David Jackson. It is just that we need to
remind
ourselves that is not the well known ones which had alot written about them
that were the great men of the west. It was the ones who survived a year or
two
in a hostile land, lived thorugh all kinds of adventures and came out with
the
experience and knowledge that made them respected amoung their peers.
Just like today, press and exposure can make a man look pretty good.

Subject: MtMan-List: OT slightly ... Montana Hunter item
Detroit Free Press, Thurs. 01-18-01, p.8D.
Article by Eric Sharp (FP Outdoors Writer).
Who: 68 year old Butte resident Jack Atcheson.
What: recognized & awarded (he donated the $1000) for a 10 year fight
that forced the state to open 5 million acres of illegally closed state
lands. In turn, that gave hunters access to a staggering 2 million
acres of federal property that had been landlocked by the unlawful
closures.
Indian trails that had been open for 200 years were suddenly blocked
off.
Atcheson: If the Democrats are in power, they try to lock the outdoors
up and keep us away from it. If the Republicans are in, they want to
cut it down or sell it.
So why does he keep up the good fight?
I enjoy fighting bureaucracy. Teddy Roosevelt said it was the noblest
sport of all. When I was a kid, I didn't understand that. I do now.

Friends,
A Brother has a tent he wishes to sell or trade. The tent is a 14x16 white
wall tent with an add on room at the back. It is made out of 18 oz fireproof
duct and really has only been used about 5 times. He has an asking price
that is reasonable for that size tent but will consider taking a small
period tent in trade or will trade for whatever.....

Subject: MtMan-List: OT slightly ... Buffalo Escape
Detroit News (staff and wires), Fri. 01-19-01, p.7D.
TRAVERSE CITY -- A buffalo farmer is having 27 of the animals shot
because they escaped and eluded capture. The buffalo chewed thru a
wooden fence Saturday on the farm owned by the Oleson family, which has
sold buffalo meat for years at its Traverse City grocery stores. The
buffalo wandered into the countryside.
Brad Oleson, one of the owners, estimated he had walked 15 miles in the
snow, trying to find the animals. He said he was reluctant to have them
shot, but made the decision out of concern for motorists and because the
buffalo had traveled so far it was unlikely they could be herded back.
One was struck by a vehicle Monday night. It got up and ran back into
the woods. The driver was unhurt. On Tuesday, a team of big-game
hunters began shooting the buffalo.
