  30. Since we are on the subject of brain tanning, here is another question about stored
  31. hides. What about hides that have been in the freezer for 1-2 years. Will they still
  32. be good to tan. The hair is still on. I keep thinking about doing brain tanning but
  33. have not as yet. No excuses, just haven't. Maybe some of the PRP boys could get
  34. together for a weekend and demonstrate brain tanning to the beginner with their own
  35. hide. Hint hint!! VBG

  52. Frozen hides will keep indefinitely for tanning as buckskin. They won't have
  53. the mucus break down that dried out hides have, so they'll behave more like
  54. fresh hides. They will be wetscrape nicely though, just like fresh hides. We

  209. Thanks for the feedback.  I am sad to say that the hides did NOT turn out too 
  210. well today when I took them out of the rinse.  I had used Red Devil Lye to 
  211. make my buck...hair slipped well.  I rinsed the hides in water for about 4-5 
  212. days...a big RubberMaid container with my hose in it at a low trickle to keep 
  213. water convection happening...hides weighted with a big rock and turned several 
  214. times.  When I went to scrape off the grain today, the hides got holes VERY 
  215. easily.  I just gave up when my best and biggest hide got its ninth hole right in 
  216. the middle.  My scraper (drawknife) was not too sharp...this I know for sure.
  217.  
  218. I wonder if one or three things occurred...I left them in the lye solution 
  219. and or water too long an weakened the hide; my buck was too strong (though same 
  220. solution I have used before with great results) and weakened the hide, I was 
  221. trying to scrape off too much grain (the last hides I tried the grain came off 
  222. in a very distinct layer - these did not behave in such a manner.  In fact, it 
  223. looked as if on a very thin gummy buildup was on the scraper and I was just 
  224. pushing water out of the hides) OR carrying a squirming child all over for the 
  225. past 20 months has made me stronger than I realized causing me to scrape holes 
  226. in my hides.
  227.  
  228. Any ideas?  Criticisms?  Critiques?  It seems these hides were possessed or 
  229. something.  The last two were very small and I just dehaired them and let them 
  230. dry to rawhide for drumheads/containers.
  231.  
  232. Fortunately, deer season here is but a month away and I have a processor who 
  233. will save hides for me...should even get a summer hide or three what with our 
  234. weather staying hot till November and deer season opening Oct. 1st. 
  235.

  452. Sorry to hear about the hides and sorry I was unable to answer my emails =
  453. for so long I have been swamped with skins to do so let me put in my two =
  454. bits first off with salt dried hides you can relax them back and make =
  455. them act like a fresh skin not very primitive but effective is to use a =
  456. commercial relaxing agent to soak the hides in but tan as normal with =
  457. the hides that tore I think that the grain was harder to remove because =
  458. their was no swelling of the skin see lye is caustic ph of about 12 to =
  459. 16 and that is what makes the hair slip but I prefer lime it is cheaper =
  460. and makes the hide swell so you can see the grain layer better however =
  461. you can leave a skin in any of these too long what happens is the lye or =
  462. lime starts to compress the fibers of the skin and weakens it  is easy =
  463. to do I will be up to Bridger on sat and would love to answer any =
  464. questions. the brain tan demo sounds great I hope to see some of it I =
  465. can always lean more. If you need any more help or have any more =
  466. questions feel free to ask and do not give the tanning up their is =
  467. nothing more fun than busting your butt and then thinking feel this =
  468. velvet soft skin I did that. and of course check out matts web site it =

  506. makes the hair slip but I prefer lime it is cheaper and makes the hide =

  508. you can see the grain layer better however you can leave a skin in any =
  509. of these=20
  510. too long what happens is the lye or lime starts to compress the fibers =
  511. of the=20
  512. skin and weakens it  is easy to do I will be up to Bridger on sat and =
  513. would love=20
