That book has been a goldmine of information for me. I recommend it highly.

I bought that book for researching over 30 years ago and still keep refering
to it. At that time it was about the only book on the subject(s) in print.
Carl seems to just do honest reporting of information - not making a case for
"this gun, or this person . . . ".

FT&T by Carl P. Russell is an excellent material culture study of the items
that allowed the mountain man to do his job. I would recommend it for any
beginner or advanced Hiverano as a good reference book. Most of the object
drawings are of real artifacts in museums and private collections. BTW, the
original drawings for the book are in the Missouri Historical Society
library at the old courthouse in St. Louis.
Welcome aboard and enjoy!! WAUGH!!!!!!

You know, Carl also put out a book on the Guns of the Fur Trade. Same high
quality.

Good day to all,
Man it's terrible to be back at work after 11 days of on the ground. Started out
at Fort Henry rendezvous. Met Mike Powell, Richard Ashburn and others. It was
neat to see the engraved rock at the camp site. We then headed up to Fort Union.
Got a lean-to set up on Monday, June 14 and headed for Culbertson, MT. We put in
there and canoed 7 mile Monday on the Missouri. The boys caught a couple of fish
to add to the evening meal. Tuesday we canoed and fished all day. Again the boys
caught some catfish, walleye, skip jacks (whitefish) and a sturgeon. We traveled
about 14 mile Tuesday. Got a bit of rain as we set up camp, but it quit soon
after. Wednesday was the final 9 mile of our trip, ending up back at Fort Union.
If you have never been to Fort Union, make it a priority on your list. Great
atmosphere and demos all day for 4 days. Great talks as well. Not to mention the
dance Saturday night. Even got son number one to dance some. Met Beaverboy, Gene
Hickman and Tim McLaughlin too. We camped in the voyager camp with Jeff and
Kathy Brown from Pinedale. A great time was had by all. A forwarning to you, we
will return!! It was worth the 1900 mile round trip. To any of the folks from
Fort Union who may be on this list, you done yourself proud.
Regards,
Dennis Knapp
