Obscure synthpop, eh? Well I'm not sure how obscure all these bands are,
but here goes.

As for other bands, some of these are hard to find and others not. Check
search engines.
De/Vision, Elegant Machinery, Beborn Beton, Avant Garde, Distain!,
Apoptygma Berzerk, B! Machine, And One, Silke Bischoff, Poesie Noire,
Melotron, VNV Nation, Brave New World, Children Within, KieTheVez, and
Wolfsheim.

That's all I can think of at this moment. Some of them venture into
techno and industrial, but have some good synthpop.

Well, I got no response to the last roll call so I'll try it again.

There are a few people out there who wanted to contribute tracks to the
MWH tribute. Two others volunteered artwork

I need to know who is still going to submit. I especially need the
artwork.

I may have to burn these things myself, but I'll get us a product.

I just got Freur's "Doot Doot" from CDNow in the mail yesterday.  I haven't
listened to it all the way through, yet...

I wouldn't classify it as synth-pop -- they use guitar and organ quite
a bit -- but there are a few songs (so far) that are synth-ish.  "Matters
of the Heart" (track 6) reminded me of Erasure's "You Surround Me" from
the "Wild!" CD.

Other than that, the Freur CD isn't what I was expecting it to be.  I
was expecting it to be more synth-pop.  I had heard someone either on
this list or another band mailing list I'm on recommend it, so I thought
I would try it.

BTW, this CD is a reissue from none other than Carl Caprioglio (are you
still here, Carl?).

Ok, Vince, go easy on the old boy...   I'll try to elaborate a bit for
you.

Camp A and Camp B each decide to participate in cooking a meal called
"private Ivan soup".  camp A feels it should be a bit salty and camp B
want's more noodles.  Well, you know what they say about cooks in the
kitchen.  And while the opposing camps are, well, opposing each other,
that Ivan bird we caught got a bit weary and flew the coop. No more Ivan
soup. :-(

Hmm... not as chock full of details as it could have been, but I like the
use of metaphor.  This explanation strikes me as one that avoids stepping on
toes, and is well suited to an event surrounding a self proclaimed
'pacifist, feminist, and vegetarian'.  (Though that description may or may
not be dated by now...)

Thank you Senz.  I give your post 3 thumbs up.

It strikes me as interesting that there's so much tragedy surrounding Ivan
appearances in the past few years. I recall he cancelled the latter part of
promoting his solo album 'The Spell', there's this private gig problem, and
worst of all was when he played Lansdowne park in Ottawa in the summer of
'97.  A number of acts were playing, starting at 7:30 pm and going until
midnight.  I got there at 8, expecting Ivan to be one of the big headliners,
only to be informed that his **20 MINUTE** set was already over.  (20
minutes!  What kind of crap lack of appreciation for a great musical talent
is that!?!?)   Even _worse_, I it was followed by a 1 hour set of C&C Music
factory, who didn't even have instruments with them.  Just a dat machine
playing the songs.  The show ranged from 1-4 people on stage singing and/or
rapping and/or dancing to the music, generally in front of the curtain.  It
was like watching a high school air band show. :P  Some of the dancing
wasn't that bad, but it had all of the charm of watching Milli Vanilli.

Okay, maybe that last part wasn't the greatest tragedy for the world at
large, but I was so close to seeing Ivan and I missed it.  And I had to pay
to see these other crap acts.  Except for this other band Blessed Union of
Souls.  They were pretty good, at least.

Still, I'm looking forward to seeing some major MWH performances once the
new album is out.  I hope they haven't completely lost the guitar sounds of
Sideways... it was a bold musical move, and I think it paid off
artistically.

You may also like The Bolshoi, Kissing The Pink, Peter Shilling, Gary
Numan, Ministry and Wolfsheim. I'm sure there are others, I'll have coffee
and give it some thought.

I also reccomend the Japanese band Buck Tick. THey are very influnced by

Freezepop http://www.freezepop.net/ - very squeaky, extremely catchy, early
80s-influenced kitschy synth-pop from Boston, all done on a tiny little
hand-held sequencer.

I Am Robot And Proud http://bloop.org/robot/ - wonderfully
atmospheric-but-funky instrumental pop, by a one man band from Toronto.
Can't think of anything this is similar to, but it's absolutely fantastic.

The Tic Tok Men http://www.ampcast.com/search/band.php?id=4878 - I think
they're from LA. If you're missing those old skool Kraftwerk beats,
definitely worth a try. Komputer, without the sense of humour.

Printed Circuit http://www.printed-circuit.net/ - one girl from Leeds using
her computer to make funky loops and catchy electropop.

Baxendale http://www.musicforgirls.co.uk/ - indiepop Pet Shop Boys is an
obvious way to describe them. From London. Great songs, catchy as hell and
funny too.

some other bands that should be noted are:
  Neuroactive  (Finland -- on 'a different drum' records)
  The Nine  (UK -- 'ADD' records)
  Cosmicity  (UK? -- 'ADD' records)
  Iris  (Utah -- 'ADD' records)

Heck, you wouldn't be in a bad state to check out most of the stuff that
comes out on 'a different drum' records if you are looking for really good
modern synthpop.

I have "With Sympathy", which I think is their first album.  It's pretty
good.  "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" is pretty good, too, but
is more industrial than synth.
