Hi folk -

I posted here a while ago asking if anyone knew when Rhythm Of Youth was
originally released. Didn't get any response, but I also asked the same
question to Stefan via menwithouthats.com. He kindly responded, saying that
he had a recollection of the UK version having been released prior to Canada
and the US, and that although it was some time in 1982 he couldn't provide
anything more definite than that.

The reason I was wanting to know this apparently trivial fact is because -
and I don't want to alarm anyone here - we are therefore only a year or so
away from the *20th* anniversary of the release of what is in my view the
best album *ever* made. Don't know about anyone else, but that is a date
that seems to me to be worth acknowledging / celebrating / recognising, and
I was wondering if you good people had any ideas as to how we little band of
MWH fans could go about doing that. Please think about it! Thanks...

Second point; The Winnebago Song. What is it? Who is on it? Is it actually
an MWH song? Just generally - what's the story?

concert.

It also would be a GREAT media event for the release of their upcoming

just let them make this album and then bother them with concert stuff later if they feel like it.

try to just enjoy that they are still together making new music. let's focus on that and try to separate "celebrating" their albums from the past.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a HUGE ROY fan! (as everybody thinks, bigger than anybody else) but, I also know that if that were my album, and people were still clinging to that as my only album worth an anniversary, i'd be upset.

Why was there no anniversary for FOTE album? is my point.

Taken in good spirit, Collin, and thank you for your response.
Obviously, I am thrilled at the prospect of a new bunch of MWH recordings,
and cannot wait to hear what Ivan and Stefan will come up with, and I also
fully accept that part of the 'point' of pop music is striving for the new
and *not* being in awe of the past.
However, there are a couple of things that I think are worth underlining.
First, as I said in my original post, in my opinion ROY is actually *the
best* pop album ever made, bar none (partly answering your "no FOTE
anniversary" point). That means that I have lived with and loved that
fantastic collection of songs for (gulp, let's dare to say it again) nigh on
20 years. All of which adds up to a lot of perspective to attach to a record
- and consequently, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking a step
back from current happenings for a while and considering all of those things
in some way. After all, as far as I am concerned, ROY still has relevance
and meaning - hell, to my ears it still sounds *modern*!
Second, I kind of take it as read that all the members of our little group
here are by-and-large fans of the group, who basically support Ivan, Stefan
et al and wish them well in whatever projects they undertake. On occasions,
that will mean providing practical support and by extension we should
therefore be trying to draw whatever attention we can to the release of the
next album. However you tally it up, we're now in the 21st century (hey!),
and we all know that in real terms, media attention counts for almost
everything now. This being the case, I don't have a problem with some kind
of tie-up between the two 'events'. Let's face it, we want people to buy MWH
stuff (don't we?), and if something can be done to aid that through the
creation of publicity, I for one think that's A Good Thing.

Last time I spoke to Tony (about a month ago) he was still negotiating.
I talked to Stephan about it as well  and he had a few criticisms.  But
at least he did express an interest in it.  One thing I believe may help
is maybe a few more songs.  As a result I've been working on my second
contribution, Ideas For Walls, for a few weeks now.

To anyone who was considering adding something but has changed their
mind for whatever reason, come on, we need you!!!  There's still decent
time yet to create that masterpiece!

One thing I have noticed is that virtually all of the songs so far have
been from ROY so maybe this project could be some kind of recognition to
20 years of "*the best* pop album ever made, bar none" (tm).

Sounds like a reasonable idea to me, Steven. What do the people who are
actually contributing to the record think?

Interesting to note the balance of songs that have been chosen being so
strongly in favour of the ROY period. I guess it just goes to show the
extent to which, however much an artist might want to emphasise the
importance of their current or most recent work, in the end they don't have
much control of it after it has left their hands... and the fans decide
whatever they want to decide...

BTW, there have been a few changes at menwithouthats.com, including an
alteration to the homepage (and reference to what I sincerely hope is not
the possible title of the new album, complete with spelling mistake) and a
brief update on the current recording.

Your band got signed to a record label? Which one?

My brother Shawn's band, The Wine Field, just got picked up by
Priority Records out in L.A.  Priority is developing a new rock
division and my brother's band is the first act they signed up.
His music was featured on a couple of TV shows and I guess it
attracted attention from the industry bigwigs.

Back in '96 it was easy to see who and how many of us there were.  A
simple "who hats" command used to provide all that info.  However, that
ability went bub-bye as internet security concerns increased.  There
used to be about a hundred or so hatless back then.  Unless lurking has
increased a whole bunch I doubt there are more than fifty of us now.

BUT... There is an entity called Lazlo who could at least tell us how

Last night on Conan,

they did their little skit where they view the "newest television stations" on the dial dropping a monitor next to Conan's desk to make it appear he is channel surfing.

They showed a couple of different stations including the "Waxed Lips News Channel" and the "Dog Psychology Channel...."

The final station was called the Men Without Hats channel....no joke.

All it was, was this one guy who, whenever approached by anybody, would respond to them by singing Safefy Dance but adding the topic of the conversation somewhere in it.

His boss fires him and he starts: "You can fire me if you want to....you can fire me right now....Cause if your friends don't fire, and if they don't fire....."

This goes on three or four times....Pretty funny.

Conan used to write for SNL a while ago and David Spade had that brief commentary about Men Without Hats as well....I wonder if Conan knows the music?

I'm still here. My band played last night - our souped-up version of
Security has become a staple of our live show. Our singer introduces it
as a MWH cover, and you should see the kids' blank looks in the audience
(except my nephew, whom I have tortured with Hats many a time!). Cool
stuff. Anyway, maybe this summer we'll actually get the damn thing
recorded and submitted for the cover project (if it even still
exists)...

Looks like it's up to me to raise the voice of doom here...
The idea was to make the project span all the albums and
thanks partly to me we've succeeded.
I'm the only one who contributed songs from PGTW and "Adventures...".
Someone else had also contributed one of the instrumentals
from Sideways. So Sideways, PGTW and Adventures are represented by
ONE track each. I know that's not much but it DOES span all the
current albums. We were even asked to contribute from the
unrepresented albums if at all possible.
Here's the bottom line: Let the cover project stand as it is!
If we can get it released in time for the anniversary, fine, but
don't even THINK of deleting non-ROY tracks or re-naming the
album "Tribute to ROY" or something like that!

to propose maybe a small reunion some weekend? We have me, my husband
who is from Quebec, Brad, Steve, Collin, I think Laura is from South
Carolina....At least I would finally get to meet some of you in
person, which I hoped to do if that show had materialized a few years
ago. We could party somewhere at a venue where they play 80's music.

I was having second thoughts about that idea as well...
Even if there was only one non-ROY contribution it would be unfair to
that artist to suddenly change course.

I'm here! Mostly lurking. I have been around for about 2 years now. I wish I had known about this list a few years ago. Sounds like you guys have shared alot. (T-Shirts, MP3's, etc.)
I only have the albums that are currently available. I was able to pickup ROY and FOTE on vinyl, but no Freeways.
Anyway, I am really glad to be a part of this!

Hi all,

I'm still here, and I'm still in negotiations with Stefan about the
tribute. I'm also waiting for a couple new songs and hopefully some
cover art.

When everything is done, if Stefan doesn't let us release it
commercially, I'll start burning copies myself. I don't know how much
I'll charge, but It'll be just enough to cover expenses and
wear-and-tear.

If anyone else wants to contribute a song or artwork, let me know. I
especially need artwork.

That's exactly what I wanted to suggest after reading the first
paragraph. "Still in negotiations with Stefan", PAH!!! I'd say, chose an
appropriate four letter word and do it with Stefan, our little wannabe.

See, apart from MWH I'm very much into Sigue Sigue Sputnik and also on the
mailing list (at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sputnik), and apart from
releasing better stuff than ever right now (not just talking about it)
they encourage ANY fan contribution. There has been a fan made remix CD,
another one will follow, and they look into it THEMSELVES that their stuff
gets put up on Napster. Tony James will spend a hell of a lot of his time
to personally answer every fan email (I myself made a very brief
technical remark about his newsletter and got a personal reply to
that one, too). I could list more than that.

Okok, I'm in a bad mood, but I still think I have a point here.  ;-)

People have strongly divided opinions on this issue.  To those who
desire the art, it can seem only right that they should be able to do as
they see fit with it, whatever that may be (copying, championing or
celebrating the artist).  But how can artists survive if they receive no
reward for what they do?  No reward means the artist can't devote the
proper time to creating quality art.  By taking things into there own
hands, the fan can dilute and saturate the art, and bypass the artist
altogether.

Some artists are very serious about what they do.  We appreciate the
Doroschucks for that very reason and I can understand why they feel
protective, maybe overly protective, of their creations.

In any case, today's artist exists in a world where they are losing
creative control over what they do and that's just life ...   Good or
bad, that's simply the way it is.  And it's just going to get worse.  I
can see a day when maybe the artist will produce one exciting piece of
work and the fans will then take over in that vein and leave the artist
begging on some street corner saying "I started that!"

Oh wait, that's today!!

(Now, where was I, oh yeah... Ideas for Wa ha ha, ha ha ha, ha ha
haalllls)
