Subject: (granite) GEA Update - January 13, 2000
Date: 13 Jan 2000 14:57:48 -0700
Hello,
I appreciate having our list serve double in size over the holiday.
However, we still need many more on this list. Ask your colleagues if
they have signed up yet.
Besides the list serve, we have a new Hot-line number for those that
are unable to receive email. That number is 266-2618.
We hope everyone is Y2K compliant because we have a big job ahead of
us. Last week was no exception. It was a busy week. GEA had many
meetings and there was much preparation being done for the upcoming
legislative session. We have begun the legislative writing campaign.
On the 6th the district, PTA, and GEA held a dinner for all the
legislators within Granite district boundaries. We culminated the
evening with great presentations from all three groups. Nearly every
legislator was present that evening. It was a great success.
This week was also a full one! We have continued the school visits
helping all faculty members to write their legislators. This is
crucial. Legislators need to hear from us. We are asking that these
letters be sent into GEA so we can hand deliver them. This also lets
them know we are out there and organizing. If your school does not have
GEA scheduled to come - email pres@gea-ut.org or call the office -
266-4411.
The Rep meeting Wednesday was an important and informative one. We
gave an update on things that GEA and UEA have been doing. Ask your Rep
for an over-view of the meeting. We also gave each school a Legislative
Packet. There were the Blue Ribbons (support for public education) and
door knockers. Ask your Crisis Captain for more information about those
items.
Thanks for all you do! It is great that we are working together to
improve our profession and what we can provide for our students. If you
have questions - contact me at pres@gea-ut.org and I will get back to
you.
Later...

Hello,
Ask your colleagues if they have signed up yet. We need more members
on this list serve so that we can better communicate.
This week is a busy one!
We began the week with the opening of the legislative session. Even
thought there was no formal "rally" at the Capitol, we asked teachers to
take part of a day to let their legislator know they were there. The
good news is - Granite had more than half the educators there....
However, the not so good news is - that were only twenty-seven people.
I hope that the door knockers are getting out into the neighborhoods.
We need to get those out - ASAP! Ask your Crisis Captain or Rep if they
have this organized.
We are looking for places around the valley to hang a "Utah Students
Deserve More" sign that is four times larger than the current ones out
there. If you know of a very visible place, please let me know.
We are continuing to have schools write their legislators. Friday
during the career ladder day we will be visiting most of the secondary
schools. We are hand delivering these letters - letting them know we
are out there and organizing. This activity is so very important! It
is making a difference because legislators are concerned about how
organized we are.
Blue Ribbon Wednesdays had mixed responses for the first try. Some
schools had kids wanting to wear the ribbons while other schools did not
have them passed out yet. Be sure that your school has those out for
next week. Some schools are doing other things on that day - such as
working to contract. I would like to know how that activity went.
This afternoon will be the first Legislative Update session held at the
UEA auditorium. That meeting is for Crisis Captains, Reps, and the
general membership. We will report on what has occurred through the
week and receive your input about where the schools are at this point in
time.
We are planning an activity on Presidents Day. We are considering
something on a Friday when students have been excused. If you would
like to give input to either of those two activities - the email address
is below.
Thanks for all you do! It is great that we are working together to
improve our profession and what we can provide for our students. If you
have questions - contact me at pres@gea-ut.org and I will get back to
you.
More later...

Hello,
Things at the Capitol are moving along. From one moment to the next we
hear good and not so good things. Rumors are flying. (Thanks to those
that are checking on these rumors. Remember... If it is real - you
will hear it from this office)
We are planning for the worse and hoping for the best. Keep the letter
writing going. Get me the letters ASAP. When we delivered letters
Wednesday, we also handed out the Blue Ribbons. What a stir. We had
legislators making sure they got their blue ribbon. It was great!
Those wanting to go the Capitol - let me know so I can be there to help
you. If it a personal leave day - I need to be sure we have a sub
covering your class (if needed). If it is after school - I would still
like to know so I can track how many teachers are being involved (and I
try to get a thank you card out, too)
We have moved our Association Rep meeting up a week. The UEA
auditorium is booked that day, we will hold this meeting at Taylorsville
High (5225 South Redwood Road) in the auditorium at 4:30 - - -
Wednesday, February 2nd.
I hope that most door knockers are out. If you have extras - bring
them to the office. We will use them on President's Day.
Talking about President's Day... The large locals are discussing the
plans for an activity. I need to know what support is out there in the
schools. I would like you to email me with commitments from your
school. We are going to hold separate rallies at a central site within
each district (from 9-10). Then we would split the group up into
smaller groups... Some would go to the Capitol to call legislators out
or walk around outside with signs... While another group would be given
a certain intersection to do the æHonk and Wave' with signs... While
yet another group would be given specific areas to do literature
drops...
I need to know if we have teachers that will do these things till
noon....
Secondly, I am trying to plan a meeting with legislators after their
committee meetings... This would be from 5-6. I am considering
Thursday - Feb. 10th. This meeting would be at the Capitol. Parking
would be easy since most legislators go home at 5:00 after their
meetings...
I need to know if we would have teachers that would attend this....
If you have not tested your phone tree - do! Many are finding
problems. We cannot have problems if we need to use them in a real
emergency. I asked for everyone to call the office to let us know if
your phone tree worked... So, please let us know!
If you have questions or concerns - just let me know!
Thanks!!!
Keep up the good work - I really appreciate you.
