  159.  I read Sweet Silver Blues in just about one sitting, Friday night; this
  160. evening I finished Bitter Gold Tears.

  162. What is it with these stories?  They're *terrible*--plots that creak
  163. because they're so over-wound, characters that are entirely
  164. one-dimensional (oh, OK, Garrett's almost two-dimensional), *far* more
  165. characters running around than there's any excuse for, no cleverness or
  166. character development or moral quandaries or anything else of any
  167. literary value--and yet, and yet, I can't put 'em down!  It's past
  168. midnight and I'm going back downstairs, soon's I finish this letter, to
  169. start the third story in the collection...

  421. Yes that is Michael Wincott.  He was also the kidnapper in Along Came A
  422. Spider.  If that movie had been more about him instead of the ridiculous
  423. plot twists, it would have been much better.  I vote for him as Raven
  424. instead of Croaker.  He's great at being quietly menacing.

  457. Subject: (glencook-fans) Casting the BC Movie
  458.  Y'all are gonna have to indulge me here a little because casting a movie
  459. from a book is one of my favorite games. It amazes me that I never gave much
  460. thought to it as far as "The Company" goes. After reading a few nominations
  461. here, I have thought about it for a while this evening and here is my 2
  462. cents worth.  
  463. 1. The Dominator- The Rock (Wrestler and "the Mummy Returns" Scorpion King)
  464. he has the right look and it would be another brief role. 
  465. 2. Lady/Soulcatcher- Christina Ricci, with a little computer assistance they
  466. could use her Wednesday Adamms persona for Croaker and Lady's daughter. 
  467. 3. Croaker- David Morse (the other Guard on the Green Mile), he's kinda big
  468. and maybe a little paunchy and with a short beard I think he would do
  469. nicely. Plus he has a sort of  dreamy quality about him. 
  470. 4. The Captain- Robert Duval, very commanding presense and strong authority
  471. figure. 
  472. 5. The Leutenant- Christopher Walken, handsome, competent and a little world
  473. weary. 
  474. 6. The Limper- I'll go along with Dennis Hopper on this one. I wouldn't have
  475. thought of him but he would be perfect now that i think about it. 
  476. 7. Raven- Russell Crow, even the name fits. 
  477. 8. Silent- Liam Neeson, strong actor and no worriy about his accent. 
  478. 9. Tom-Tom- Morgan Freeman 
  479. 10.One-eye- Eddie Murphy, with enough time in the make up chair he can be
  480. anybody you want and he can be seriously funny. 
  481. 11.Goblin- Paul Reubens (AKA Peewee Herman) 
  482. 12.Whisper- Kathy Bates 
  483. 13.Elmo- Oliver Platt 
  484. 14.-Shapeshifter- John Rys-Davies, big boistrous, loud and sort of hairy. 
  485. 15.Murgen- Johnny Depp- Hallucinating, time traveling, occasionally
  486. catatonic Murgen is perfect for Depp. 
  487. 16.Big Bucket-Mick Foley (another Wrestler but he wouldn't have to do much
  488. but stand around with his bucket hanging out). 
  489. 17.Sahra- Lucy Liu or Michelle Yeow(sp)? 
  490. 18.Wheezy- Willy Nelson, Hey I'm a Texan, Ya gotta have Willy in there
  491. somewhere. 
  492. 19.Mogaba- Samuel L. Jackson20.Sindawe- Danny Glover21.Blade- Nicholas Cage,
  493. because his uncle said he could. 
  494. 22.Willow Swan- Alexander Godunov (just for the looks).23.Howler- Alan
  495. Rickman Darling would have to be played by an unknown, and I'm not very
  496. familiar with asian or Indian(east) actors so I won't try to go

  650. I'm afraid Glen Cook was a no-show; he kinda needs a minder :)  We
  651. reached him by phone at home, though, and had a phone-interview.  And
  652. all my Important Questions got asked:
  653.  
  654. The next Garrett book, _Angry Lead Skies_, is due out in the spring. 
  655. He's now hard at work on a new trilogy, something in the style of the
  656. George R. R. Martin series, "Song of Ice and Fire", in that it is
  657. primarily Europe-with-an-alternate-geography.  I asked about "your new
  658. mystery book", and he thought at first I meant yet another Garrett
  659. book--he didn't think anyone knew about the near-future police
  660. procedural (he told me about it at last Archon); he's submitted that
  661. one, but it's not yet been picked up by any publisher.
  662.  
  663. And, yes he *is* planning on a new Black Company book--continuing on in
  664. time with the Company (or whatever), not going back for a prequel or the like.
  665.  
  666. About the unpublished Dread Empire book:  He wrote that years'n'years
  667. ago, he thinks about 85% finished--but he hasn't seen it in so long he
  668. doesn't even know where it is now.
  669.  
  670. Someone asked him when he started writing the Garrett books:  He said he
  671. began in 1980, with the "non-fantasy" version (!!).  Turning it into
  672. fantasy, he started putting that series out in parallel with the Black
  673. Company series.

  675. Pretty good for a 10-minute interview :)
