Subject: (geareps) New information...
Date: 02 Nov 2000 06:48:30 -0700
Hello,
I shared with UEA (Wed night) the motion made at the meeting... I
was told something I did not know (and thought I needed to share with
you)- there has been major communications with the task force since the
ad in the paper. (Pressure on the task force was the major reason for
the press conference) Those on the task force that were not too keen on
coming up with a plan have NOW got the message LOUD and CLEAR.
Also, each of the media stations have already begun doing pieces on
those facts and the task force. So, this also played into the decision
for "postponing" the press conference.
So, at this point in time - UEA has been told that the media would
not come (unless there is something else to add to what is already out
there). That is why it is on hold (not totally canceled).
I meet with Jordan and Davis presidents again today. I will keep
you updated. (I sure hope the rest of you are now checking this
email)...
Let me know if I can help you in your schools. I already have
several scheduled. Nile or Pat can also come... We don't want you to
be beat up - we are here for you.
Thanks for all you do! You make me so proud to be your president!
That is much of what I was thinking in that four and a half hour meeting
Saturday. You are the best!!!
More later... :D

Hello,
This is a very special and important request...
One of your own - Carol Spackman Moss (Educator at Olympus High) is
running against Rep Ray Short. Rep Short has sent out a flyer that is
erroneous...
To respond to this - UEA is printing Carol a flyer that needs to be
delivered on Monday. She needs your help!!!! Please - please -
please... join us at Olympus High parking lot - from 3:00 on (as soon
as elementary can get there...) It should take about an hour or two of
your time.
This is a very crucial race. We need to support our own member in
her efforts (whether you live there or not...). Please email me or her
daughter (another of our own) with some commitments or approx. numbers
they can count on... jill.thackeray@granite.k12.ut.us
Thanks!!!

Date: 03 Nov 2000 17:19:02 -0700
Hello,
A simple request...
Many teachers have been calling Representative Patrice Arent who is
a member of the funding task force. This would be fine - but - she is
right in the middle of the busiest weekend with elections. She has a
big battle on her hands. ALSO SHE IS THE GOOD GUY!!! She truly
appreciates your thoughts - however, we need to let her finish her
campaign and get re-elected (then she will be happy to talk to
anyone...) But, she is not the one to bug - however... Senator Mike
Waddoups is!!! (his opponent is Jim Bramble - super supportive of
public ed - just as a side plug....)
Thanks for all your help!!!
More later... :D

month- how supportive is your faculty? (please don't take any formal
vote) Choices: Very supportive / somewhat supportive / not at all
supportive
2) If the state were to do a statewide job action in response to
the Legislature not being able to come up with a long term funding plan

not at all supportive

The Results are in: A Mandate to Support Children and Public Education
Yet the current Congress remains in gridlock. Ask them to vote for
public education.
NOVEMBER 7TH - ELECTION RESULTS SPOTLIGHT PUBLIC EDUCATION
"America's public schools emerged as a uniting force in this election,"
declared NEA President Bob
Chase. "The results are a mandate to support and improve public schools.
This mandate is one that
should transcend the party lines that now dissect our nation's capital."
Key education wins in House and Senate races signal great promise for
uniting behind children and
public education. The newly elected bipartisan Senate is decidedly more
friendly to children and
public education. Similar public education victories occurred in House
races.
Yet the current congressional standstill is jeopardizing funds to hire
and train new teachers, reduce
class size, modernize schools and provide afterschool programs. The
message delivered by Tuesday's
election is a mandate for the new Congress to work for children and
public education.
GRIDLOCK CONTINUES WITH LAME DUCK CONGRESS
Appropriations leaders and the White House reached an historic
bipartisan agreement last week to
increase education funding by $7.9 billion dollars. Congressional
leaders are now back peddling from
the deal they made. Our local schools are in danger of losing the
historic increase in funds to hire and
train new teachers to help them reduce class size, modernize schools and
provide for afterschool
programs.
YOUR WORK CONTINUES TOO
Congress will be back to work on Monday, November 13, 2000. We need to
be back to work as
advocates for children and public education. E-mail your
representatives in Congress and ask them
to commit to support this historic $7.9 billion increase for education
funding? Visit
www.nea.org/lac/funding and click on "Send Congress A Message" to ask
them to sign-on to this
pledge:
YES! I pledge to support and vote for the historic $7.9 billion increase
for FY2001 education
funding to begin meeting the pressing educational needs of America's
children and public education.
Remember, we've made it easy to do: Visit www.nea.org/lac/funding and

Hello,
Thanks for the responses (the two questions) I have received so
far. I am still missing about ten of you... Please respond as soon as
possible. Thanks.
~~~~~~~~~~~
New...
I am looking for volunteers...
1) to help with the committee that is going to plan an "80" year
celebration and update our very old book about GEA
2) two days (Thursday/Friday - 7th & 8th or 14th & 15th) in December
to help with interviews for potential principals - These volunteers need
to be from various levels/depart/etc.
~Do not give me names unless they have agreed to volunteer for these two
things - thanks!
~~~~~~~~~~~
Saturday, Sue and I were in a little shorter Local President's
meeting (four hours instead of four & half)... It seems more possible
that the Task Force could come up with some plan. Their next meeting
(for those off-track) is this Tuesday (November 14th) at 9:00 in room
405.
Group or individual letters to the editor would be a good idea.
Keep to topics such as - the need for a long term funding plan -
importance of planning for the future - needs of the schools - etc...
(The purpose of these editorials would be to increase support for the
system) I strongly suggest NOT mentioning things such as job actions.
UEA needs to do the communicating with the press on this subject.
Keep me informed as to what is happening in your buildings and what
you are hearing. I need you to communicate with me. Thanks!
More later... :D

Hello,
I am still missing the two questions from Fox Hills, Jefferson,
Canyon Rim, Rosecrest, Beehive, Decker Lake, and Detention Center.
Please refer to last week's email...
I still need a few more volunteers to help with principal interviews
(that would take a Thurs/Fri of your time - district pays for sub) and
for the 80 celebration/history of GEA - - - see yesterday's email...
The Funding Task Force meeting was very exciting yesterday (not
really)... They have decided to make the meeting on the 28th an all day
one... The possible ideas for funding that have been discussed outside
of the committee meeting - look like good beginnings.
Be sure there is not a panic growing in your schools. If there is -
contact us to help you - if there are a lot of questions - if there is
great concerns about things.... We will come out to the school for a
meeting or a lunch. Let me know.
New - - - UEA has asked me to return to the S-Team. (This is the
group that planned all the different activities for last year's campaign
for better funding. This is the group that has been planning the
activities so far this year and discussing the type of response to the
funding task force.) If you remember, this year the UEA Board
reorganized the committee - they enlarged it and Granite was not asked
to continue participating... However, this invitation is a good step
forward.
More later - Rumors are already flying - Keep in touch... Remember
to change the return address to pres@gea-ut.org (do not respond back to
the list serve) Thanks!

Hello,
I have received many concerned e-mails about the things that you are
hearing on the news and reading in the paper about the funding task
force and possible job action. And, due to the sensitivity of the
situation - this is what I can tell you presently (and you will have to
trust me with what I cannot tell you at this time)...
DO NOT - I REPEAT - DO NOT
DO NOT - PRINT or FORWARD - to anyone!
this is for YOUR INFORMATION ONLY
and can be shared VERBALLY with staff
I (along with many other local and state leaders) attended the
meeting of the task force Tuesday, November 14th. At that meeting they
decided to make their meeting on the 28th a full day meeting. Currently
some ideas are being considered. It seems as if they are making some
progress. Outside of the committee meetings - various people
(association leaders, school board members, superintendents, etc.) are
working with members of the task force to solidify these ideas and look
at other ideas.
The Education interim committee has been rescheduled for November
30th. This will allow other groups (legislative audit committee and
funding task force) to meet before this final report.
So, currently, we are working, watching and waiting. I am getting
information from each of you regarding your building and staff members.
No matter what happens or does not happen this month - we must be
preparing for the legislative session. That is where the rubber will
meet the road.
I would really appreciate knowing you got this. So, please respond
(remember do not respond to the list serve - change the address to
pres@gea-ut.org - - - just cut and paste it in there)
Thanks for all you are doing!!!

Subject: (geareps) Serious request...
Date: 17 Nov 2000 09:17:44 -0700
Hello,
This is a very very very serious request...
We need members!!!
The GEA Budget Committee has been trying to complete the UniServ
Budget. This is the second budget we work with that covers all the cost
of the staff - meaning their salary, benefits and other costs related to
running an office.
To say we are short - is an understatement!!!! Last year we cut the
budget to the bone. This year we cannot even meet last year's costs!!!
Reason??? GEA is more than a hundred members short from last year.
Part of this is due to the long time members that have dropped this
year. Part of the lower membership is due to fewer new hires becoming
members - only 130 of nearly 400 new hires have joined this year.
Between the drops and lack of new members - we are down more than
100 members from last year. The UniServ budget is $15,000 short!!!
THIS IS SERIOUS!
THIS IS DEVASTATING!!
WE COULD LOSE STAFF!!!
I AM BEGGING YOU
PLEASE
PLEASE
PLEASE... Each person needs to get another member by the end of this
month... Go back to those non-members that have said they will think
about it... Talk to those past members that quit to "make a statement"
this year... Approach and ask those that have never joined... AND -
Contact each and every provisional educator in your building (explaining
that we DO indeed protect their rights)...
Thank you for your help. We need each of you - did I mention this
was serious?...
Later... :D

Hello:
I wanted to let you know that even though I am out of town, I am in
constant contact with the office about what is occurring with UEA in
regards to the Funding Task Force.
Please keep calm!
UEA Board is meeting today to discuss what the task force did. We
will watch what report the Education Interim Committee receives on
Thursday. UEA will make their announcement Thursday after this meeting.
Please remember that I asked each school to answer two major
questions. The one question that concerns us now - If UEA did a
statewide job action in response to the long term funding task force,
how supportive would your school be?
Therefore, the reps made it very clear that their schools did not
want to participate in any job action at this time. Because of this,
there is no need for any further voting.
We will know more on Thursday afternoon.
Thank you...more later.
