  7.     I shared with UEA (Wed night) the motion made at the meeting...  I
  8. was told something I did not know (and thought I needed to share with
  9. you)- there has been major communications with the task force since the
  10. ad in the paper.  (Pressure on the task force was the major reason for
  11. the press conference)  Those on the task force that were not too keen on
  12. coming up with a plan have NOW got the message LOUD and CLEAR.
  13.  
  14.     Also, each of the media stations have already begun doing pieces on
  15. those facts and the task force.  So, this also played into the decision
  16. for "postponing" the press conference.
  17.  
  18.     So, at this point in time - UEA has been told that the media would
  19. not come (unless there is something else to add to what is already out
  20. there).  That is why it is on hold (not totally canceled).
  21.  
  22.     I meet with Jordan and Davis presidents again today.  I will keep
  23. you updated.  (I sure hope the rest of you are now checking this
  24. email)...

  26.     Let me know if I can help you in your schools.  I already have
  27. several scheduled.  Nile or Pat can also come...  We don't want you to
  28. be beat up - we are here for you.

  107.     Many teachers have been calling Representative Patrice Arent who is
  108. a member of the funding task force.  This would be fine - but - she is
  109. right in the middle of the busiest weekend with elections.  She has a
  110. big battle on her hands.  ALSO SHE IS THE GOOD GUY!!!   She truly
  111. appreciates your thoughts - however, we need to let her finish her
  112. campaign and get re-elected (then she will be happy to talk to
  113. anyone...)  But, she is not the one to bug - however... Senator Mike
  114. Waddoups is!!!  (his opponent is Jim Bramble - super supportive of
  115. public ed - just as a side plug....)

  260. Yet the current Congress remains in gridlock.  Ask them to vote for

  266. Chase. "The results are a mandate to support and improve public schools.

  268. should transcend the party lines that now dissect our nation's capital."

  270. Key education wins in House and Senate races signal great promise for
  271. uniting behind children and
  272. public education. The newly elected bipartisan Senate is decidedly more
  273. friendly to children and

  278. and train new teachers, reduce

  289. the deal they made. Our local schools are in danger of losing the
  290. historic increase in funds to hire and
  291. train new teachers to help them reduce class size, modernize schools and
  292. provide for afterschool
  293. programs.

  296. Congress will be back to work on Monday, November 13, 2000.  We need to
  297. be back to work as
  298. advocates for children and public education.   E-mail your

  376. that the Task Force could come up with some plan.  Their next meeting

  380.     Group or individual letters to the editor would be a good idea.
  381. Keep to topics such as - the need for a long term funding plan -
  382. importance of planning for the future - needs of the schools - etc...
  383. (The purpose of these editorials would be to increase support for the
  384. system)  I strongly suggest NOT mentioning things such as job actions.
  385. UEA needs to do the communicating with the press on this subject.

  426. really)...  They have decided to make the meeting on the 28th an all day
  427. one...  The possible ideas for funding that have been discussed outside

  436. group that planned all the different activities for last year's campaign

  440. reorganized the committee - they enlarged it and Granite was not asked
  441. to continue participating...  However, this invitation is a good step
  442. forward.

  494. (association leaders, school board members, superintendents, etc.) are
  495. working with members of the task force to solidify these ideas and look
  496. at other ideas.

  498.     The Education interim committee has been rescheduled for November
  499. 30th.  This will allow other groups (legislative audit committee and
  500. funding task force) to meet before this final report.

  502.     So, currently, we are working, watching and waiting.  I am getting
  503. information from each of you regarding your building and staff members.
  504. No matter what happens or does not happen this month - we must be
  505. preparing for the legislative session.  That is where the rubber will
  506. meet the road.

  541.     This is a very very very serious request...

  543.     We need members!!!
  544.  
  545.     The GEA Budget Committee has been trying to complete the UniServ
  546. Budget.  This is the second budget we work with that covers all the cost
  547. of the staff - meaning their salary, benefits and other costs related to
  548. running an office.
  549.  
  550.     To say we are short - is an understatement!!!!  Last year we cut the
  551. budget to the bone.  This year we cannot even meet last year's costs!!!
  552.  
  553.     Reason???  GEA is more than a hundred members short from last year.
  554. Part of this is due to the long time members that have dropped this
  555. year.  Part of the lower membership is due to fewer new hires becoming
  556. members - only 130 of nearly 400 new hires have joined this year.
  557.  
  558.     Between the drops and lack of new members - we are down more than
  559. 100 members from last year.  The UniServ budget is $15,000 short!!!
  560.  
  561. THIS IS SERIOUS!
  562. THIS IS DEVASTATING!!
  563. WE COULD LOSE STAFF!!!

  573. that we DO indeed protect their rights)...

  668.     I wanted to let you know that even though I am out of town, I am in
  669. constant contact with the office about what is occurring with UEA in
  670. regards to the Funding Task Force.
  671.     Please keep calm!
  672.     UEA Board is meeting today to discuss what the task force did. We
  673. will watch what report the Education Interim Committee receives on
  674. Thursday.  UEA will make their announcement Thursday after this meeting.
  675.  
  676.     Please remember that I asked each school to answer two major
  677. questions.  The one question that concerns us now - If UEA did a
  678. statewide job action in response to the long term funding task force,
  679. how supportive would your school be?
  680.     Therefore, the reps made it very clear that their schools did not
  681. want to participate in any job action at this time. Because of this,
  682. there is no need for any further voting.
  683.     We will know more on Thursday afternoon.
