By the way... usually if the coordinates go offscreen AVS linearly
extrapolates the pixel colours... but if you turn "wrap" mode on, then
instead when the coordinates go off one edge they wrap round to the other
side... the result is a kalidescrope of Julias! 8-0 You really must try
this! 8-D

FOTD -- September 19, 2001 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
As my mood lightens, the fractals are coming easier. Today's
fractal for example took me all of 5 minutes to find and all of
50 seconds to render. The iterated formula subtracts Z^(-1.1)
from Z^(-0.9). The tiny difference is then multiplied by a
factor of -548.998 before adding 1/C. The real(p3) parameter is
extremely critical, the slightest change resulting in a totally
different image.
The midget at the center of the image is actually located on the
negative stem of the tiny M-set that forms the parent fractal.
(Since the stem points east, I guess it's a positive stem.) The
sparkling features surrounding the midget remind me of dewdrops
on a spider web. These dewdrops inspired the descriptive but
not very poetic name "Midget with Dewdrops". The picture seems
just a bit above average as FOTD's go, and as a result has been
given a rating of 6.
An additional good point of the image is its speed. The
parameter file renders in under one minute, leaving the trip to
Paul's web site at:

up to the discretion of the reader. The benefit of the download

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's fractal lies at the very edge of resolution, so close in
fact that to make the parameter file draw the proper image, I
needed to insert a <mathtolerance=/1> command into it by hand.
The image was created by the simple formula 100(Z^6)+(Z^2)+C,
which was iterated up to 700 times for each pixel. The parent
fractal resembles a 2-headed Mandeloid which is not quite
critical. Today's scene is located on a filament of a larger
midget, which in turn is located on a still larger filament
extending from one of the two large eastern bays.
There is a hysterical air to the entire scene, which consists of
twisted and tortured filaments. The name "Fractured Hysteria"
was inspired by this hysteric appearance. The name is not a
sign that I am hysterical.
Though the parameter file renders in almost exactly 5 minutes on
a tired old Pentium 200mhz machine, the best and most convenient
way of viewing the image is to give Paul and Scott a chance to
render it and post it to their web sites at:

The fractal weather today was a bit more humid, but still very
pleasant, with a temperature of 81F 27C. Needing little to
satisfy them, the fractal cats lounged most of the day in the
porch chair, watching the birds fly by. When one careless bird
wandered a bit too close, Tippy chattered and thrashed his tail
at it. Of course, the chattering chased the bird off. The
fractal cats seem to be losing their natural instincts for
catching their own food.
As for right now, I'm going to get at least a little work done.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
I seem to be pulling myself out of the blue mood I've been in
for the past week or so. What better time to post a moody blue
fractal, and name it "The Fractal Blues"? Things are very busy
today however, so this will have to be a short discussion.
The formula behind today's image, (Z^4)+2(Z^3)+(1/C), is a very
simple one, as are the formulae behind nearly all of my images.
All the excitement has been added by the <tdis> outside
coloring. I keep the formulae simple because I am frugal. I
enjoy doing a lot with a little. And what better way to express
frugality than with a fractal -- a mathematical object that
finds infinity in a teacup?
I rated today's image at an above-average 7. I kind of like the
feeling of depth it gives.
The parameter file renders in just under 4 minutes. The file of

10:30pm when a violent thunder-and-hail storm passed over,
frightening the fractal cats into hiding.

Actually, I disagree... You know those weird patterns of black dots they
show to mental patients to guage their mental state? I think the way people
name fractals has a lot to do with their inner subconcience. In short, Jim,
by naming your fractals you are potentially giving an aweful lot away! ;-)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's fractal is active. It's not just sitting there like a
bump on a log; it's up there on the screen, doing things for the
whole world to see. And it's not just the activity that sets
this particular image apart. Something about it is different.
It is not normal. (As though there were such a thing as a
'normal' fractal.)
Seeing so much activity from a single fractal, I had no trouble
finding the name "Lots of Activity". Undecided as to whether a
rating of 7 or 8 best describes the fractal's worth, I settled
on a 7-1/2.
The formula 1.3(Z^2)+10(Z^(-0.01))+C created the image when it
was iterated with a maxiter of 1200. Most of the activity was
created by setting the outside to <tdis> and the inside to
<fmod>. With the normal flat equal-iteration bands and flat
black inside, today's image is boring indeed.
The parameter file renders in 10+ minutes on my tired old
Pentium running at 200mhz. On newer faster machines it renders
in less time. Those who would rather not run the attached

Hi Marcel,
You have an interesting file. Usually a par file also refers to a formula
- - there doesn't seem to be any formula in your file. Looking at your file
all I can figure out is that the first set of numbers seem to refer to the
coordinates ( you input those by pushing 'z' to call up the formula file
and then pushing F6 on your keyboard) t250 could be the rotational angle
i246, MG2 f123 u60 are beyond my analytical ability. 255 and 200 could be
referents for your screen from the selections you get by hitting
'y'...actually 255 and 200 could be for 'potential max colour' and 'slope'
. The other numbers remain a mystery. And as I stated: where is the formula.
