  24. Just FYI, I, too, continue to receive as many as 6 copies (never fewer
  25. than 2) of <u>almost all</u> posts, Multiple's (naturally), being the most
  26. multiple. However, the fact that I receieve dup's of all of <u>any</u>
  27. Posts which are multiple indicates a problem  w/ my local ISP.
  28. <p>I've eliminated the most frequently-occurring Netscape source of "multiples" 
  29. - -  common in Communicator versions 4.5+ according to my ISP and Netscape
  30. itself - in which specifying a "Preference" for having a copy of all incomings
  31. from a given Sender or Subject saved in a separate Folder for Archival
  32. reasons, frequently leads to its being downloaded twice, or downloaded
  33. once and internally-rewritten from cache back to Netscape's list of "New
  34. Messages".
  35. <p>I also have received Multiple's multiples in waves: the same message
  36. 2, or 4 at a time, separated by several minutes under "date", suggesting
  37. that there may be some problem with (dare I suggest it) Multiple's ISP,
  38. or- more threatening yet - with Multiple's own [computer] equipment<font size=+2>*.</font>

  40. <p>What these symptoms might suggest to someone more computer literate
  41. than myself (i.e., anyone else on this site) would be interesting to hear,
  42. as it is an intermittent  but recurrent problem for me, and RMF brought
  43. it up.

  104. This seems to have started on Tuesday (May 15, 2001).  And since that
  105. time, I have not been receiving quantities of duplicates from any of the
  106. other posters to this List except from one individual.
  107.  
  108. Which leads me to believe that it is not a problem with the Majordomo
  109. mail server used for the FractInt Discussion List.  Maybe it has
  110. something to do with the MSN Explorer 6.00.0010.0912 which "Multiple
  111. Bogeys" uses (after all, it is another Microsoft product going through a
  112. Hotmail account).

  136. I enjoy junky old sci-fi movies, and to a lesser extent their 
  137. close relatives, junky old horror movies.  (They're not good 
  138. enough to be called films.)  One of my favorites is the original 
  139. version of "The Blob".  Yes, I know there have been more recent 
  140. blob movies with better special effects, but the cheesy effects 
  141. are one of the things that makes junky old movies so much fun to 
  142. watch, especially after a day when a job goes sour and the 
  143. customer complains.  (It's nice to know that I'm not the only 
  144. one who occasionally goofs up.)
  145.  
  146. The more recent thrillers with their computerized effects are 
  147. far better done and far more convincing to watch, but with a few 
  148. exceptions they have become predictable, and more importantly, 
  149. they just don't produce the same satisfaction of seeing that I'm 
  150. not alone in my bloopers.
  151.  
  152. Despite its lateness, today's image, which rates a 7, is not a 
  153. blooper.  The parent fractal, which was drawn by the formula 
  154. Z^(sqrt(5))+C, is a double-lobed thing with a split along the 
  155. entire length of the X-axis, and prominent buds on both sides of 
  156. the split.  The midget in the image is located in a tight spiral 
  157. in a cutoff area of chaos in the center of the west branch of 
  158. the valley of the southern bud.
  159.  
  160. I named the image "The Fractal Blob" in honor of that 50-year-
  161. old movie, a film that probably deserves no honor.  Running the 
  162. parameter file will set one back 1/2 hour, making a download of 
  163. the image file the better way of viewing the scene.  In an hour

  306. I appear to be running out of names for my (IMO) wonderful, 
  307. classic fractals.  Today's image, for example, is filled with 
  308. holes -- puddles, ponds, lakes, bays, harbors, straits, seas and 
  309. one ocean -- the interior of the midget.  All this water and no 
  310. name.  What to name such an image?
  311.  
  312. While searching for a name, I began wondering about those extra 
  313. holes in the image.  In today's image they resemble the shadows 
  314. of butterflies.  Such holes have no right to be there, but they 
  315. almost always appear in fractals that combine different powers 
  316. of Z.  Thinking about the supernumerary holes, I named today's 
  317. image "Shadows", and rated it a 6.
  318.  
  319. It's a half-hour render, so don't hesitate to give Paul and Lee 
  320. a chance to render and post the image, and then download the GIF

  769. I am quite pleased with today's image, so pleased in fact that I 
  770. rated it a lofty 9, which equals 'one of the best' on my scale 
  771. of fractal worth.  I named the image "Simply Wonderful" as a 
  772. statement of my opinion of it.
  773.  
  774. Actually, the image came as a lucky mistake.  When I brought up 
  775. the MandelbrotBC1 formula, I forgot to shift the function from 
  776. the 'recip' that I had been using with the M-Mix4 formula.  I 
  777. had intended on using the 'floor' function and didn't realize my 
  778. oversight until well into exploration of the parent fractal.  
  779. But my mistake turned out to be serendipitous when I found a 
  780. very interesting area to investigate.  The result almost but not 
  781. quite speaks for itself.
  782.  
  783. I don't know why today's image pleases me so.  Perhaps it's the 
  784. colors, but probably not, for I spent only 15 minutes working 
  785. with the colors.  Perhaps it's the shapes, but I have seen such 
  786. shapes countless times before.  Perhaps it's the mood I'm in, 
  787. but my mood is also average.  I suppose it's one of those things 
  788. that we'll never know, but regardless, the picture is pleasing 
  789. to look at, and well worth a look.
  790.  
  791. The expression Z^1.861209718+C was iterated to create the 
  792. fractal.  The exponent is the fourth root of 12, though I doubt 
  793. that this has any effect on the finished image.  The wonderful 
  794. image may be seen by running the parameter file and waiting 12 
  795. minutes or by giving Paul and Scott a chance to render and post 
  796. the GIF file of the image to their web sites at:

  882. I'm having a problem that I hope You can help me with. I'm experimenting with 
  883. a autozoom application for Fractint.

  885. I load a Fractint image on the screen and search until I find the rectangle I 
  886. want to zoom into, (there is no rotation, or skewing on this rectangle). I 
  887. know the heigth and width of the source image in pixels, and the center-mag 
  888. parameters for the the fractal image on the screen. I also know the 
  889. position,heigth and with in pixels of the area that i want to zoom into.
  890.  
  891. What I can't figure out, is how to calculate the Center-mag parameters for the 
  892. fractal that's inside the area (rectangle) that I want zoom into. I get it 
  893. rigth if there is rotation = 0 and skewing = 0 in the start fractal, but I 
  894. can't figure out how I'm going to to this calculation if the rotation or/and 
  895. skewing is different from 0.
  896.  
  897. I would be very glad if You could help me, or tell me where I can find the 
  898. answer that I need. I have tried to find it in the Fractint source, but with

  941. I may be able to help here, Thore.  I wrote a 'zooming' program in VB =
  942. which
  943. produces .par entries for a 'zoom out' of a given fractal.  (Indeed it =
  944. uses your
  945. screen-saver program to generate the .gif images!)  Once the images are =
  946. generated
  947. there is a companion program to animate the zoom-out - zoom-in.
  948.  
  949. You are welcome to the source, it may help.
