  25. resorting to any stitching, etc. I have done =

  31. relevant numbers.

  69. Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:

  71. In today's two images, we continue rotating the view ever closer 
  72. to the Julia orientation.  In fact, we are only 4 degrees from 
  73. the Julia orientation.  At this angle, the Mandelbrot stuff, 
  74. which has already expanded to infinity horizontally, has 
  75. stretched to over 14 times its normal measure vertically.
  76.  
  77. Only the top part of the Mandel-bridge now appears in the 
  78. close-up 4D-08 image, while the emerging spiral toward the upper 
  79. right has become quite well defined.  A narrow band at the top 
  80. of the main band of brilliant Mandel stuff is the side view of a 
  81. sub-valley in the main valley.  A careful examination will show 
  82. the Mandel bridge beginning to lose its definition as the 
  83. increasingly narrow angle emphasizes the irregularities along 
  84. its edges.  However, a high enough maxiter would smooth these 
  85. irregularities.
  86.  
  87. The bottom of the image has been overwhelmed by an intruding 
  88. mass of banded, low-iteration Julia stuff.  This mass will clear 
  89. away as we rotate ever closer to the Julia direction in future 
  90. FOTD's.
  91.  
  92. The image is filled with spirals, all of which converge 
  93. clockwise.  But look carefully in the lower left corner, where 
  94. one small spiral converges counter-clockwise.  The spirals are 
  95. like people -- there are some that just have to be different.
  96.  
  97. As I mentioned at the start, two images are attached to this 
  98. discussion, the second image being a view of the entire fractal. 
  99. This image, 4D-08a, which is already taking the shape of a Julia 
  100. set, is perhaps more striking than the first.  In it we see a 
  101. proto-Julia set, with a grossly enlarged band of Mandel stuff 
  102. cutting straight through it.  This band is still a side view of 
  103. the lower valley of the northeast period-4 bud, though it has 
  104. long since lost any resemblance to a Mandelbrot valley.  The 
  105. supernumerary bands at the edges of the brilliant band are 
  106. sub-valleys of the main valley.
  107.  
  108. The first image renders in one minute; the second takes 
  109. 1/2 minute.  These times do not include the cutting, pasting and 
  110. renaming necessary to change this letter into an executable 
  111. parameter file.  Those who would rather not cut, paste and

  302. I am relatively new to the fractint program but have had long standing
  303. interest in chaos theory and fractal functions in general.  Two of your
  304. FOTDs have struck me as very intrigueing from their similarities to physical
  305. phenomena and I would like to get more into exploring the underlying
  306. functions.  I have looked on both your FOTD and Les St Clair's website for
  307. their full formulae and parameters but apparently you haven't gotten around
  308. to posting them yet.  Could you send me or post that info for FOTD
  309. 11/15/2000 and FOTD 11/25/2000 at your earliest convenience?  I would
  310. greatly appreciate it and will let you know what I do with them in return.
  311. Keep up the excellent work.  I, for one, am enjoying this fascinating and

  653. We have another two-image FOTD today.  The first image shows the 
  654. local scene; the second image backs off far enough to reveal the 
  655. entire almost-Julia set.
  656.  
  657. Yes, we're almost there.  Today's rotation takes us to within 
  658. 3/4 degree of the Julia plane.  At this angle the thickness of 
  659. the brilliant Mandelbrot bridge has been increased to over 76 
  660. times its normal thickness.
  661.  
  662. We see the straight edges of the bridge now becoming quite 
  663. ragged and increasingly indistinct, but the increasingly well-
  664. developed spiral in the upper right corner is now fully formed.  
  665. All spirals converge clockwise, except the brilliant blue spiral 
  666. near the center, which to be different converges counter-
  667. clockwise.
  668.  
  669. This first image is almost but not quite a Julia set.  The 
  670. second image of the day, which shows the entire fractal, reveals 
  671. how the width of the bridge has increased until it fills almost 
  672. the entire scene.  Only the top 1/4 of the image and a tiny area 
  673. near the bottom are not covered by the grossly enlarged 
  674. projection of the lower valley of the period-4 northeast bud of 
  675. the M-set.
  676.  
  677. The first image renders in 3-1/2 minutes, the second in 23 
  678. seconds.  For those who prefer their fractals pre-rendered, the

  764. Finally got around to trying it last night.

  766. Fractint animator has a bug -- it always looks for fractint in "c:\fractint" 
  767. regardless of the setting on the "system" tab.
  768. (I changed it to "e:\fractint", which is its location on my system, and 
  769. tried to do the first.par demo, and it balked
  770. complaining that it couldn't find fractint in "c:\fractint".)
  771.  
  772. Unfortunately, this is a showstopper on my system, and for anyone else who 
  773. has put fractint in a non-standard directory or on a different partition or 
  774. drive.
