Nice site. I always love your galleries. ....as I love the fractal calendar
that I have up now. January's fractal is one of yours, as are many of the
other months. It's the best fractal calendar I've owned.

Calendar Club sells them. But it you don't have a Calendar Club near
you, Rollo Silver sells them out of:

I was given one for xmas and I recognized almost all the names of the
contributors from this list. Its called "Fractal Universe 2000" by
Avalanche publishing.

Heh...
- Interesting! I think some other people have mentioned that they feel
- fractint really stresses out their monitor because of the large
- numbers of mode switches in a session.
I don't "feel" it does. I know it does. I blew the horizontal output
transistor in a monitor *twice* because I had learned FractInt's keyboard
controls sufficiently to do about one mode switch per second, sustained for
a couple of minutes. I did this while flipping through images, looking for
specific ones.
When flipping modes in FractInt, the best advice is to take it slow. Don't
rush. Monitors aren't really designed to switch modes rapidly or
frequently.

Bob,
- I see speeds of Pentiums going faster all the time. Will a Pentium 700
speed
- the generation of FRACTAL images more than say a 350 Pentium would?
Generally, yes. Fractals are one of those things that, most of the time,
are almost entirely CPU-power driven. As pointed out, there are many
factors that affect a program's speed, and mainly it's the slowest task
that has the biggest impact. Thus a task which involves reading lots of
data from your hard drive will chiefly be limited by the speed of your
drive; complex 3D rendering in games is chiefly limited by the speed of the
3D hardware in your video card; and for fractals, the rendering is chiefly
limited by the speed of the floating-point unit in your CPU.
I mention floating-point specifically because the Pentium-III appears to be
very close to the Pentium-II in this area of performance, when comparing
similar MHz CPUs. However, the Athlon processor from AMD seems to offer
substantially greater performance for the same MHz. (That is, a 500MHz
Athlon should be faster for fractals than a 500MHz Pentium-III.) Please
note, this is NOT true for earlier AMD processors like the K6; these are
SLOWER than the Intel chips at the same clock speed. Only the Athlon (K7)
is faster.
Note that all of this applies ONLY if the fractal takes sufficient time to
calculate that CPU performance is the limiting factor (i.e. takes more than
a few seconds). If you are exploring fractals with complex formulas, this
really shows, but many simple fractals can be rendered very quickly by
today's processors, such that a faster processor might not be much faster
at producing fractals.

Morgan,

all

something
- that is even more of a constraint than video refresh rates.
FractInt's disk-video modes do in fact buffer line data.

Subject: (fractint) Using your face as an orbit trap
Greetings Fractalizens;
Any of you fractal formula writers see any possibility with the following

This is not my Web site. Heck, I don't even have a Web site.

=============================
Experiment: Fractal Fun House
This coloring method is a rather interesting application of the orbit trap
method I've discovered (probably not the first though).
Basically, with orbit trap coloring, there are areas on the complex plane that
"trap" the orbit, and give the pixel a color. Since
diffent iterations trap at different times, you get an interesting layered
effect.
I came up with the idea of using an image as my orbit trap, instead of a
function. So I took the complex plane, and mapped an
image of my face to it. For each pixel, iterate the fractal formula N times,
then grab the color of the pixel from the image map
based on the last iterated value.
To make these interesting images, I've only iterated the fractal formula 1 or 2
times. This method is a very cool way to explore
the inner working of many fractal formulas. But for now, lets just have some
fun with my face...

FOTD -- January 08, 2000
Fractal enthusiasts and visionaries:
I named today's wonder-fractal "Epicycle". I have no idea why I
gave it such a name, but the more I study the image, the more
appropriate the name seems. The formula behind the scene is
0.1Z^100+Z+C, a formula that does a lot more than one would
suppose at first glance.
Although the midget is plainly a quadratic one, the pattern
around it is filled with the typical stuff of the very high-
order Mandeloids. The parameter file is moderately slow -- slow
enough to raise impatience. My recommendation is to download
the image file from Usenet at:
<alt.binaries.pictures.fractals>
or from the Web at:
<http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html>
The fractal weather was sunny and mild today, with an afternoon
temperature of 52F (11C) that kept the fractal cats happy. And
since my philosophy backlog has been emptied, I have no philos-
ophy at this time. So until next time, take care, and stick
with fractals until the victory is won.

Subject: (fractint) FOTD, 09-01-00 (Z Exponent Epsilon) (c)
FOTD -- January 09, 2000
Fractal enthusiasts and visionaries:
This afternoon I decided against my overworked M-Mix4 formula
and investigated the fractal that Lee Skinner named Zexpe, a
little known fractal whose formula is a very simple Z^e+C, and
which can be calculated with the manzpower formula hard coded
into Fractint.
On the surface, this fractal looks much like the Z^3 Mandeloid,
but inside it is completely different. One of the more curious
things with this fractal is the graceful way in which it handles
its discontinuities. With an irrational exponent of Z, the
resulting fractal must necessarily be filled with discontinui-
ties, but as today's FOTD shows, these breaks merely add to the
interest.
I have named the picture "Z_Exponent_Epsilon" for purely descrip-
tive reasons. The parameter file is slow; the download is fast.
That download may be found on Usenet at:
<alt.binaries.pictures.fractals>
and on the W.W.Web at:
<http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html>
The fractal weather was fairly normal today, with hazy sun and a
temperature of 45F (7C), which was perfect for fractals, though
a bit too cool for the fractal cats. It was also perfect for
deep thought on remote philosophical things. But I'll hold back
the philosophy for a few days, lest the world be overwhelmed
with so much wisdom in so short a period of time. ;-)
Until tomorrow, good night or good day, and I'd walk a kilometer
for a fractal.

Is there some way that DOS can be made to use a different screen mode than
640x480 for its display, eliminating the need to switch modes between the
control screen and the display screen?

Subject: (fractint) FOTD, 10-01-00 (It's Here) (c)
FOTD -- January 10, 2000
Fractal enthusiasts and visionaries:
Well, fractal folk, it's here. Today's fractal that is. When I
found it after an exhausting 13-minute search, I caught myself
murmuring, "it's here". I rather liked the sound of the phrase,
so I gave the picture the name "It's Here".
The image was calculated with the M-Mix4 formula, (Yes I'm using
it again.), this time combining portions Z raised to the power
of two well-known irrational numbers -- the square root of two
and the golden ratio. It is a lively scene, the brilliant
violet of the central midget being surrounded by a brick-red
star pattern and finally by dimpled green terraces. The image
rates about a 5 on my 0-to-10 scale of FOTD satisfaction, which
equals adequate.
As can be inferred from the pattern of straight radiating spikes
surrounding it, the midget in the picture lies just beyond the
tip of the negative tail of a larger midget. Had it been
located at the positive side of the larger midget, it would have
been surrounded by one of those hard-to describe brain-like
patterns.
The weirdness evident in the outer green area of the image is
one of those surprises that arises when two different exponents
of Z are combined. These surprises are what keep me coming back
to this formula, which I have barely scratched the surface of.
The parameter file and formula are attached below. The easiest
way to run the parameter file is simply to copy this entire
letter into your Fractint 20.0 directory with a *.par extension
and run the file as you would any parameter file. But the
parameter file of today's image takes 5-1/2 minutes to run.
Therefore it might be better to download the JPEG image from the
Usenet binary group:
<alt.binaries.pictures.fractals>
The image is also posted on the WWW at Paul Lee's site at:
<http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html>
The fractal weather today was cloudy, raw and cold, with light
rain in the afternoon and a temperature of 42F (5.5C) that
turned the fractal cats into radiator cats for the day. But
though such conditions are not so good for cats, they are
perfect for fractals and philosophy. The fractal has already
appeared, the philosophy, which is as controversial as always,
will soon do so.
Well, I guess this brings us to the end of another FOTD. Little
did I imagine when I started this series back in the spring of
1997 that it would grow to such epic proportions. And the end
is nowhere in sight -- at least not until I run out of fractals.
Until next time, take much care, and see you soon.

Miguel -
Great gallery - I'm glad it's back!
I'm partial to spirals myself, and you have some beauties! spir0008.jpg is
nice. Very hypnotic! And I love angular spirals like spir0014.jpg. But I
think my favorite of the whole page was the non-spiral tribute to Frank
Zappa image, zswami.jpg. It made me laugh!
Thanks for the enjoyment!

Does anyone know if the tnt2 video cards like the diamond 770 support
the high end vesa modes? None of the manufacturer sites or reviews
I've read seem to think such things are worth mentioning. Any links to
sites that keep track of this would be kewl.
I know the Matrox milleniums, Matrox g200 and diamond 550 do but they
don't have 32m memory.

Subject: (fractint) A new FAQ
Some time ago I evoked the question of a new (or updated) FAQ. I have read
some replies, specially from Damien Jones (unfortunately I have not this
message in the computer I use today and I don't remember in what list Damien
has posted it).
Several messages where in the sci.fractals news group, the texts of some of
them are hereafter and personal comments follow.
>>Michael Taylor (to me)
You or anyone else are allowed to create a derived (and updated) FAQ
based on sci.fractals FAQ edited by Michael C Taylor and yourself.
I'm too busy with too slow a link to maintain it.
>>J.P. Louvet
- ----Personal comment : this message was sent to Michael Talor on 3/01. Today
I have no reply----
Happy new year. Thank you for your reply. I will follow up it to some
fractal mailing lists to see if somebody is interested. I know that Damien
Jones is in favor of a fractal-art FAQ. The question is the scope of the
FAQ. It is obvious that a sci.fractal FAQ and a fractal-art FAQ may have
many parts similar, and some different. It is usual that news groups have a
FAQ : it is why sci.fractal FAQ is a good name (with something like "created
by Michael Taylor, continued by xxxx"), better than fractal-art FAQ. But the
sci.fractals news group is not very active and a great number of people will
be more interested by fractal art.
What is your opinion?
>>J.P. Louvet
.....
We have now the position of Michael Taylor (however I am waiting for a reply
to my last message). But before doing more we need to answer to the question
of the scope of a future FAQ : a strictly theoretical FAQ (perhaps Roger
Bagula is in favor of this?), or a FAQ intended for a greater number of
presumptive readers, mainly interested by fractal art (but with a number of
theoretical questions/answers). This is more likely the opinion of Damien
Jones. The present (and not updated) FAQ has not a clear orientation about
this question.
>>Roger Bagula (excerpt)
How about:
sci.fractal FAQ--> theory and programming of fractals
alt.fractal FAQ---> fractal art and popular fractal subjects
Since the two discussion groups exist and a lot of us read both.
>>Mixmaster
How about two FAQs...
the sci.fractals / alt.fractals FAQ, on theoretical topics
and
the alt.binaries.pictures.fractals FAQ, on fractal art
>>A.B.P.F.
This would keep both FAQs more oriented toward their specific
newsgroups, and keep the sizes more reasonable for each.
Though they both should have _current_ references to each other
(probably in the initial introduction) explaining the basics of each
FAQ. Any changes to either sould be communicated between the
Author/Custodian of each.
>>A.B.P.F.
Since I already maintain the limited one for the A.B.P.F. newsgroup, it
would be no problem to also maintain and post the proposed one for
sci.fractals/alt.fractals
- ----Personal comment above these messages----
It seems that 2 FAQ might be the best choice.
1) A theoretical one might be a new sci-fractals FAQ and might be posted in
the sci.fractals group. It is not my domain of interest. Roger Bagula has
suggested several names of persons who might be solicited to maintain it.
2) A fractal art FAQ. The outline described by Damien in a previous message
seems to be good : questions/answers about the theoretical background (very
important) and more specific questions/answers about the programs, the
techniques (for examples coloring techniques, anti-aliasing, layers...),
printing... Some parts of the old FAQ can be reused.
But where does this FAQ might be posted? In sci.fractals or abpf (there is
no problem, I think, on the other hand to have a main web site and several
mirror sites)?
We have the candidacy of ABPF_Bot@hotmail.com but I don't know who is behind
this "name". I think that there are many people in the 3 main discussion
lists who are well known artists and theoreticians.
Paul N. Lee has sent a reply about his page of links. It is a very great
source of information. I think that a FAQ must have links to such pages, but
it must be more concise because it is not the same scope (I have made the
error of giving too large lists of links in the old FAQ).
Who is interested to do the job... or to be the coordinator of a job made by
a small team (I can contribute to some extent)?
J.P. Louvet co-editor of the late FAQ.
