Oh boy, I can hardly wait! I was having the exact same trouble
compiling xfractint as Scott was having; following your advice that
you gave him allowed me to compile it.
Make install had a problem in that there was no pre-existing
/usr/local/bin/fractint directory and the make script didn't create
it. Making that directory by hand allowed make install to run to
completion.
I typed "xfractint" and two windows popped up, one the familiar
rolling credits window and the other a blank, black display window.
Pressing enter got me to the Main Menu. Pressing 'del' to choose a
video display mode caused an immediate segfault. :-((( Running as
root still resulted in a segfault.
Darn. I was hoping to be able to play with Fractint again. :-)
I'm running Red Hat 6.0 with KDE. My video card is a Matrox G200.
My CPU is an AMD K6-2 300 MHz.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Rob

Nope. The README file said nothing about typing 'make' and/or 'make
install'. After the instructon to type 'make xfractint', the README goes
on to tell how to find out about what features are in the lastest realeas=

and how to get more formulas. It later explains how to create
fractint.doc. I was left with the impression that 'make xfractint' was al=

Same here running slackware 3.4. XFractint is one of the option
programmes that you can select during installation from the slackware
cd-rom. It installs and runs (yes it actually runs). However, pressing
DEL will not change the video mode -- it just simply starts the
programme running. The programme runs, I presume, in the video mode that
was selected when installing xwindows. Everything else seems to function
ok. So, if you're desperate for xfractint, you could try the slackware
distro ;-)

When you get to the Main Menu, and 'select video mode' is hi-lited, just
press enter. That will start creating the default mandelbrot (or the
fractal you chose from the list) in the blank display window. On my
machine, the fractal developes only in blue. Once I save it, and view it
with a gif viewer, it's in color, but it's not correct. There 3
overlapping images of the fractal. Something's not right.
I tried either 'del' or Shift-D (i don't remeber which), and my machine
just froze up. I ended up having to do a cold re-boot. The 'Shift-D' came
from the man page for xfractint. (There's alternate keys to use in Linux
listed under 'BUGS'.)
Good luck,=20

There are no "video modes" under X11, so you don't need to set this.
(I haven't ever seen it SEGV when I did that, but it didn't do
anything useful either since there is no menu of video modes, etc.)
Use -geometry on the command line to change the dimensions of the
picture window or use -disk in conjunction with -geometry to set the
dimensions of the disk-video mode.

There is an install action in the makefile, you might want to try
that. You may need to edit the makefile to adjust the install
location. This is why I've proposed modifying xfractint to use
GNU autoconf. The resulting configure script can handle install
locations and figure out the BSTRING business and so-on, without
making you edit .h files or makefiles.

As I said... X11 doesn't have a concept of a "video mode". That's a
DOSism leftover in fractint. Use the -geometry command line option
to get different sized graphic windows.

This sounds like the well-known "my default visual isn't 8-bit
pseudocolor" problem. Chances are you're X server is providing a
default visual in 16-bits or 24-bits per pixel or the default visual
isn't pseudocolor, but truecolor or directcolor. Even if the default
depth is 8 bits, xfractint will still draw everything "blue" if the
default visual isn't pseudocolor. I sent a patch to Tim for this
default visual problem. It isn't the most efficient approach, but at
least it makes xfractint work on visuals besides 8-bit pseudocolor.
I'm not sure if that patch will be included in the next official
release or not. I'm currently restructuring the fractint code to take
better advantage of the native graphics capabilities on non-DOS systems.
The current code just shoehorns everything into the DOS model, which
is why it behaves a little funky on X11. Consult your X server's man
page for switches on setting the default visual.

Besides magnetic1j another type of fractals showed the same behavior: simple=20

Phil,
Yes, you are right. I start my xserver with: 'startx -- -bpp 16'. Looks
ugly with only 8-bit color.
Still, when I save a fractal as a .gif file, and then view it in 2 other
programs, it's doesn't look right. The basic mandelbrot is 3 mandelbrot
fractals, overlapping each other 50%, all on the X-axis. Also, there is a
multi-colored line down the middle of the image. This line is similar to
the one you see when saving a fractal image to disk in the DOS version.
If you want to see what I'm trying to explain, I can upload an image to m=
y
Website and send you the URL.

Xfractint is generally broken when run in a visual other than 8-bit
pseudocolor. The only video mode that works in that situation is the
disk video mode. If you use the '-disk' option and render the image
out to disk video and then save the image, it will look correct.
Otherwise, all bets are off.

Been there, done that, looked at the code and fixed it (sorta) ;-).
As I noted in my other message, I contributed a patch that at least
gets xfractint limping along on other visuals. If your server is
providing an 8-bit pseudocolor (or any depth pseudocolor) visual, you
may be able to fake out xfractint by using Xnest to provide a server
whose default depth is 8 and default visual class is pseudocolor.

I'll try the -disk option. I've used that before with the DOS version whe=

creating fractals larger than my screen size. Besides, in Linux, I can't
see the 256-color fractal till it's done anyway, so might as well use the

Recently there has been some talk on this list about a new version of
Fractint. Is there already more known about this. (When, new options,
etc?????).
Since the birth of my daughters a year ago I have not found much time to
play around with fractals, but here are a few examples of the recent past.
Comments are, as always, welcome.

Tim would be the one to answer when the version will come out. The
one big new feature I'm aware of in the next release is the 'evolver',
which lets you explore the fractal parameter space in a manner similar
to the KPT texture explorer.

We will have a public beta out in the next week or so. I am finding
time these days only on the weekends, so some times it takes a
while to do even simple things (sigh!). All I need to do is massage
"what's new" into the docs. If at all all possible I'll do it this
weekend, but I can't promise.
We will simultaneously publish a DOS fractint, a smaller float-only
version of the DOS fractint, and an Xfractint version. This will be a
"public beta" of version 20, because we intend to have a period of
time to clean up bugs and problems before releasing 20.
This is an evolutionary version, not revolutionary, but it does have a
number of interesting new features, including Robin's evolver (as
Rich said). Tell you what, though, I'd rather not answer questions
about what is in the upcoming version. It's not that I'm impolite, but
I'm sure you'd rather have me use my limited time to get it out the
door than to answer what's in it and never release it :-)
Tim

Subject: (fractint) Few questions..
Hai guys,
I'm a relatively new user from Holland. At the moment I'm writing a
dutch manual for use at the "EFA" (Educatieve faculteit Amsterdam).
(Obviously I'm unscrupulously making use of the terrific english manual,
but hoping to add some mathematical creativity in some appendices)
Anyway. I hope you can help me with the next, purely practical and
probably trivial questions:
* I am using a HP deskjet 690C printer. Up to now I didn't manage to get
reasonable printouts with it. The only thing that seems to work is
setting "printer=HP", but then no colour at all is used (except a
TERRIFIC load of black, never mind wich colour map I'm loading).
* For some reason I'm not able to change the "maxhistory" parameter.
I both tried "maxhistory=20" and "maxhistory=<20>", but in both cases
FractInt just replies with a gentle "Oops, I couldn't understand the
argument" ....
Anyway, probably more questions will arise during the next week or so, I
hope you guys won't be annoyed by it. By the way: FractInt is quite
addictive. It allmost beats Chess at that. In my case, that's really
making life into a mess. I don't shave. Take a shower once a month. See
my wife once a week (for 15 minutes at most).
But having great fun in the process!
Theo.

One work around which I tend to use is to simply save the fractal as a .gif
image (hit "s"). Then either I print it out from the associated program,
such as PSP or LViewPro, or copy it into a word processor such as Word
Perfect and print it from there - depending on the usage I am making of it.
There are other ways, especially within fractint, but someone else can
write about that more clearly.
It allmost beats Chess at that.
Heh. Until you obtain Fritz 5.32, Hiarcs 7.32, Junior 5.0, Nimzo '99, and
so on...and that also depends on what you use those for. (Hiarcs 7.32 even
learns! - but that has nothing to do with fractals... :) )

How do I put it in reverse?

You already have float=y, which is my only suggestion. When rendering
L-systems with integer math, lots of times the picture is hosed.

I have it set to twice the default amount in my SSTOOLS.INI file:
MAXHISTORY=20
And it has no problems keeping the information on that many for me.
