A "multifractal" is a structure that, on inspection, turns out to be a
number of fractals of different dimensions all occupying the same space.
They often turn up in modelling real-world situations, when different
influences on the system being modelled each have their own chaotic behaviour.

Hello all the list, I just did the subscription to the list.
I'm a mathematic student from the Pau's University, France.
Please, may someone explain what is a dynamic system and give me an example ?
If anyone know a tutorial out in the Internet I will be glad to download it.
Please let me know.
Thanks a lot.

"Dynamical system" is a very broad term. They come from the study of
simple physical systems whose dynamics can be described with a few
simple equations, but whose long-term behavior is quite unexpectedly
complex given the simplicity of their analytic description. You've
probably seen little "chaos toys" marketed that consist of a pendulum
with a magnet at the end swinging over top of a group of
electromagnets which cause the pendulum to wobble and sway in a very
complex pattern. This is an example of a chaotic dynamical system.
The dynamics of magnetic force and gravity are quite readily
described, but the simplicity of their analytic description doesn't
make their chaotic behavior over time clear.
With fractint, you can view the lorenz attractor which is an example of
a dynamical system that was based on a model of fluid flow for
studying weather.

Do you or any other Fractint user have any experience with using the 3dfx
Voodoo 3000 card for running Fractint? Over here in the UK it is considered
just now to be the fastest video card around.

Sorry, I don't have any idea about the 3Dfx cards. I'd be interested in
knowing how you make out if you decide to try one, though.

Subject: (fractint) Pesky menu screen
I had Fractint 19.2 on my other computer, and had no problems. It is now
in the shop, so I set up my son's, and downloaded Fractint 19.6. Every
time I save or load a file, the menu screen is minimized and
superimposed over the fractal file up in the left hand corner. How do I
get it off? I am running Windows 95 (it does the same in DOS). Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

I would try a selection of different video modes. Some modes may
be corrupting the video image. A mode that worked fine on the
previous machine may not be compatible with the new one.

I don=B4t understand exactly what=B4s happening to your image,=20
but anyway you might try invoking fractint with one of the
following parameters :
fractint textsafe=3Dbios
fractint textsafe=3Dsave
fractint textsafe=3Dyes
=20
If one of those parameters fixes your problem, you can set it=20
permanently in sstools.ini
Good luck,

After looking into several alternatives, I moved my formerly Geocities

photographic web site there, and knew their FTP connections to be the
best around. They provide unlimited space, free of charge but require
the so called "Xoombar" -- the most unobtrusive kind of advertising

I left a plain forwarding message at my Geocities site, and removed al

Thank you! fractint textsafe=save solved the problem, but I don't
have any .ini files to add these lines to. Is Fractint 19.6 complete
in itself? If not, what files do I need and how can I get them
without having to download the earlier Fractint zip files, or if I
have to, what files can I get rid of safely?

Yes, Fractint 19.6 is complete in itself; sstools.ini is a file you can
create yourself. When Fractint starts, it automatically looks for an
sstools.ini file. If it finds it, it reads through it and takes what it
finds to be parameters as if you had invoked them on the command line.
For example, here's my sstools.ini file:
- -------8<--------
[fractint]
video=SF9
type=Mandel
maxiter=1023
inside=255
passes=b
cyclelimit=255
float=yes
textsafe=save
periodicity=no
formulafile=D:\fractint\formula\fractint.frm
parmfile=D:\fractint\par\fractint.par
map=D:\fractint\map\default.map
- -------8<--------
The [fractint] line is necessary, and you'll note that I have the line
"textsafe=save" in there. The rest can be figured out from Fractint's
online documentation, and from the numerous excellent tutorials floating
around on the Web - of which the Fractint Homepage is premier.
Regarding what needs to be kept, and what can be discarded, I'd list them
as follows. Some poeple may dispute my exact ordering, but this is how I
see it:
Necessary files (ones which Fractint needs in order to run):
Fractint.exe (duh!)
fractint.cfg
default.map
altern.map
file_id.diz
read.me
Recommended files (rounds out Fractint's behaviour):
Fractint.doc (a stub for the real Fractint documentation; read it to
see what I mean)
Files ending with .frm, .par, .map, .l, and .ifs (except default and altern)
simplgif.exe
sschoice.exe
Optional files (tutorials and demos):
Anything ending with *.key, *.bat
tru.c
debugfla.doc
tplus.dat
phctutor.txt
if_else.txt
frmtut.zip
Of the necessary files, only the first four listed are _really_ necessary
(and I think that you can even get away with discarding default.map if
you're in that much of a pinch).
Well, I hope I've answered your questions in there somewhere. This is
certainly the right place to find out for sure.

Subject: Re: (fractint) ... simmered down
A question to all the experts:
As I use fractint mainly for primary school I would like to restrict the
options to the basics and expand those as necessary.
Can I just "comment out" some of the types listed on [t] and which file has
to be edited?
Is there a quick way to find out which of the many frm-files on my HD have a
relation to another given type, let's say all frms related to mandel?
If I create sstools.ini as described by Morgan fractint will not ask for a
video-mode? And the subdir may also be on a network-drive?
Also, does anyone know a use of fractal pictures off-screen, like a blueprint
for jewelry or pottery or architecture? Any URLs?
Thanks for helping and all the beautiful pictures

Hi All,
I just added two galleries to my site:
<http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Sylvie_Gallet/homepage.htm>
- Gallery #11 (10 carr2821's created with Ultra Fractal)
- Gallery #12 (12 misc images created with Ultra Fractal)
I also replaced the contents of Gallery #4 (formerly Fractals of the
Week) with 12 deep mandel zooms created with Fractint.
Enjoy!
Cheers,

This information is hard-coded into the fractint source. If you're
willing to modify the source, email me and I can probably tell you
what you need to modify. There's a big table and you would just take
entries out of the table.

Other than manual inspection you mean? ;-). If you mean somehow
"knowing" that a certain formula is the mandelbrot set, then that's
not really feasible. You can examine .par files to see which ones
include the types you've left inside the source from your first
question.

I don't know about the network drive, but yes I've configured
sstools.ini so that fractint stops asking for the video mode and
selects the one I've chosen as the default.

Don't know about that, sorry.

I don't know about any sites, but for Christmas I gave my mother several jpgs of my
favorite fractals, and she converted them in cross stitch patterns. As soon as she
finishes one, I'll try to get a picture of it, and put it up on a web site.

Hi,
I am a -rather novice- Fractint user and have started "playing" with the

So I wonder how the capabilities of Fractint formula parser could be
extended? (i.e. add loops and (possibly recursive) functions).
Extended or not, I find Fractint (and especially its parser) very
fascinating. Congradulation on your work. Keep trying.
