Subject: (fractint) A par
The following par is generated from one of Kerry Mitchell's .frms
(triangcount_jul) and a little tinkering with an accompanying par (started
generating, z, f6, f4, enter, enter). The bailout (RP2) I reduced from 1
gazillion to a rather smaller number of only 1,000,000 - and a couple of
other minor tweaks: maxiter, inside, RP3, a zoom. Inserting one of my
overused color maps and cycling a little produced the image. The image
takes a little time to generate, about 10 minutes on a creaky P200 MMX. The
image is best viewed, imo, in the dark.

I think I would try editing the above line to read: textsafe=save or
textsafe=safe.
Don't know if that would help; one of the more expert users will probably
have something to write...

Try the following out:
[fractint]
textsafe=save
fastrestore=yes
recordcolors=yes
video=sf5
float=yes
parmfile=g:\fractint\*.par
formulafile=g:\fractint\formula\*.frm

Hi Jim,
> I looked at the help file but I
>can't find which command to use to begin colorcycling.
Well the way I mormally start with an autokey sequence is to run
fractint with these parameters:
fractint autokeyname=keys.key autokey=record
and ,bearing in mind that every keystroke counts, just run through the
actions I want done, so in your case I'd hit R then right arrow, then
return (to step along one in the file list and load it) rturn again (to select
the video mode if necessary, depending on whether you have
askvideo=false in your sstools.ini or not) then when the picure is loaded
hit + to start cycling.
Then exit from fractint and look at the file just created (keys.key in this
case ) with an ordinary text editor like notepad or dos edit.
The first thing you'll notice is an awfull lot of "wait nn" lines where nn
is some number. These are there because fractint records any pause of
longer than 1/10th of a second or so. I usually get rid of all these first so
that the actual keystrokes used are easier to follow.
From then it's a matter of adding back waits at appropriate places, you-
ll need to use 'calcwait' immediatly after any action that takes time and
would be interrupted by a keystroke i.e. after the return keystroke that
initiates the image load. Calcwait waits until the last action has finished
before continuing.
I'll post you something more complete soon but I'm afraid I'm typing
this into my cellphone miles from a PC with fractint in it but the above
should be pretty accurate in spirit if not in exact detail.... it may be
'pause' rather than 'wait' for instance :-)
More to follow........
Robin.

Hi Jim,
Having got home and sat in front of my PC I dug this out of the help docs
(hidden in the what's new
section.. BTW for easy documentation searching simply run fractint like this:
fractint makedoc
this will create a file called fractint.doc which can be read and searched
using
your favorite editor
or word processor )
******************************************************************************
***
Ctrl-Right used in file selection screens now skips over directory listings,
and if the cursor is on the last file, moves the cursor to the first file.
This makes possible uninterrupted cycling in autokey mode. The keyword for
this keystroke in a .key file is CTRL_RIGHT.
The following additional keystrokes were also implemented:
Ctrl-Left (autokey symbol "CTRL_LEFT")
Ctrl-Down ("CTRL_DOWN")
Ctrl-Up ("CTRL_UP")
Ctrl-Home ("CTRL_HOME")
Ctrl-End ("CTRL_END")
Run the following .key file with command line parameters fastrestore=yes
and askvideo=no (and, if you don't set your video mode in sstools.ini,
video=[your standard video mode]) and your coworkers will get a continuous
display of the .gif files in your default .gif directory when you go to
lunch (come on, we know you have Fractint on your hard drive at work):
"r"
MORE:
ENTER
CALCWAIT
WAIT 30
"R"
CTRL_RIGHT
GOTO MORE
******************************************************************************
********
The CTRL-Right arrow is the key to it all :-)
So.. you now want to alter the above little snippet to switch on colour
cycling.. easy!
just put a
"+"
in between the calcwait and the wait 30 lines, this will kick fractint into
colour cycle mode
and cycle the colours, you might want to put in a "-" instead to cycle the
colours in the other direction... or even both with a wait in between.. you
get
the idea I'm sure :-)
One more thing need to be done though.. fractint is now in colour cycle mode
and
needs to be taken out of that before attempting to restore another image
otherwise the "R" keystroke will be misinterpreted
so after your various cycle commands put in an escape keystroke immediately
before that "R".
escape can't be typed properly in a text editor so it has a special label
(like
the CTRL-RIGHT used above) which is ESC.
so.... the entire opus will look something like this:
(everything after the ;'s are comments from me and are ignored by fractint )
"r" ; 'R'estore an image
MORE: ; label, just used to mark where to loop back
to
ENTER ; load the first image
CALCWAIT ; wait until loading has finished
"+" ; start the colours going "wow!"
WAIT 30 ; pause for 30 secs
"-" ; now reverse the direction of colour flow
WAIT 30 ;
ESC ; quit colour cycle mode before loading the
next
image
"R" ;
CTRL_RIGHT ; Skip to the next image;
GOTO MORE ; go back and do it again!
clip that out and paste it into a file called cyclem.key and start fractint
like
this:
fractint autokey=play autokeyname=cyclem.key askvideo=no fastrestore=yes
And if all is well then fractint will merrily display every file in your
directory with
cycling on each one.
That's all there is to it :-) If you want to display a series of images that
are
all
zooms of each other then you could try loading them using the file browser
(what's that?
.. look in that doc file you just made :-) )
Right. I just tested that file and all seems well, one thing to watch out for
(at least on
an NT4 system.. probably W95 too) is that if you use notepad to edit your key
file it seems
to have a habit of naming everything with a .txt extension even if you've
already specified
one so cyclem.key becomes cyclem.key.txt .. not good! Also fractint seems not
to
have any handy
error messages if the key file can't be found but just sits there waiting for
a
keystroke as normal.
Also you must be using the latest version of fractint (19.6) for the CTRl-
Right
keystroke feature
to be present.
Hope this helps, there's loads of stuff that can be automated in this way..
I've
used it to
generate zoom movies, zooming rotating and cycling movies (bit over the top if
truth be told :-) )
all sorts. Have Fun!
BTW something I just thought up as a handy debugging tip for large complicated
key files is to
build them from the start with every other line consisting of
;;
this will be ignored in the normal run of things but if you can't see what's
going wrong between
keystrokes simply use your editors search and replace feature to replace all
occurrences of ;;
with WAIT 5 ;; to put a handy pause between every keystroke. then to run at
full speed again simply
replace all WAIT 5 ;; with ;; again.
Cheers,
Robin.
BTW I just noticed that this exchange hasn't made it to the list,
Could you post the other two msgs I sent in reply to the list for me so others
can benefit from this
information, thanks.

I very strongly agree (not with the part about being lazy)!!! Indeed, it
would be nice to be able to edit both formula and par files without
having to leave Fractint.

Subject: (fractint) Project fractal database
Hi fractal enthusiasts!
It is since 1994 that I am putting fractal images on Internet, so I
thought that it was time to start doing it in a more "professional" way.
Instead of opening a new fractal gallery, I have put all my images in a
database and published them with an interface that not only will allow
thousands of images to be published, but will be more easy to use.
In principle I managed the effort in the same way that you manage
the publishing of a CD-rom. The database is growing day by day and
I hope that what is now available on:
http://www.ba.infn.it/~zito/project/index.html
will give you an idea of what I mean.
I am speaking in detail about this, since , given the fact that the
database itself contains no images, it is very small.So it is in principle
possible to use the same idea to build a "database of fractal images on
Internet".

BTW, as I have had time to start sorting out the umpteenthousand posts and
placing them into organized fractint slots, it dawns on me: where is Wizzle?

Somebody asked the same thing a few weeks back (possibly Jay?). I don't
recall seeing a reply then to that message. Maybe someone in the L.A.
