Subject: (fractint) Printing Trial
Hi all.
I thought I'd share the results of a recent trial with you all on the above
topic. This follows a recent thread on photo enlarging etc..
In Australia we have what is referred to as the Kodak Image Magic System. It
may well go by other names in different parts of the world.
This is basically a system whereby you take your old photos, and they scan
them at high res and reprint them to your wishes. In this way you can remove
red-eye, enlarge prints, delete ex significant partners (!) and so on.
I made some enquiries as to the file types the system uses (JPEG) and
various other parameters.
The limitations are as follows:
1/ You can only get data into their system via floppy or CD.
2/ I doubt that the system (because of the job it is normally designed to do)
could handle compressed files.
3/ Printouts are normally limited to 8" x 10", although they claim they can
enlarge up to 16" x 20". I don't know if this is available locally (I live
in the country).
The above looked reasonably promising so I rendered Paul Carlson's NWT3WAY3
from April this year (I chose this because of the nice bold colours it uses)
in 9 pieces. I then joined it, converted it to JPG format, sharpened
slightly and resampled to the biggest file I could comfortably fit on a floppy.
The result?
A 1.34Mb file that printed out (with a very minor amount of cropping) to an
8 x 10" print of stunning quality! The people in the shop were amazed.
Nobody had ever brought them in a picture on a disk before.
The colour pretty closely matched the screen and what amazed me was that it
both worked the first time and was so easy to do. How many times can you
ever claim that?
The cost?
$13.50 (Australian) including laminating.
Try it - you'll be impressed.
Regards,
Wayne

Subject: (fractint) Copyright FAQ? / demons / Gallet-6-08
I just got a query from a Website visitor about copright issues,
and seem to recall someone compiling either a FAQ or digest
of prior discussions. Or was that on the Fractal Art list?
Can anyone direct me to the data? Thanks in advance.
To Paul DeCelle, re "Demon_At_The_Gates":
Nice image. Love those flames! If only I had the server space
(more = $$ issue), I would host that Halloween gallery I suggested
last spring when I came up with "Lucifer holds Court".
To Sylvie, re Gallet-6-08:
Nice to see more images from the author. I especially liked the
crosses. And I just can't rave enough about the formula! I have
been using it exclusively since August 4th, and find it as fertile
as "gravijul" and its relatives.

Yes. (Si) :-)
I personally liked the "trapiz" series the best (especially #2).

I tried it just now at 31200, it took about 45 seconds going through
three generic nodes and nine Net nodes. All were fast except for one
generic and one Net node, which were moderate. Might just be the time
of day affecting the download.

Paul,
my browser says 1st sight no longer in operation, the second sight is
fine for what it deals with but I don't think it helps clear the air for
well meaning folks playing with pars either. There is a fine line to be
drawn and even after a cupple of years I'm not sure where it is. The
best I've heard is "if it looks similar to the orginal then the orginal
copyright holds." I won't say more cause everyone is sick of the issue.

I get it fine. At first glance, the most relevant documents would seem to be
Derivative Works (http://www.artslaw.org/DERIV.HTM)
Whose Copyright is it - Anyway? (http://www.artslaw.org/OWNCOPY.HTM) <- the
Copyright Office might decide that the printer holds the copyright, not the
artist.
Is it Original Or is it...? (http://www.artslaw.org/REPRO.HTM)

Subject: (fractint) Fractint built-in formulae
I would like to know if it is possible to have in a text form the formulae "embedded' in Fractint. I know that the
various help windows are giving good hints, but I would prefer a real *.frm file
In particular, I would like to see the Pickover's three dim orbit defined by
xnew = sin(a*y) - z*cos(b*x)
ynew = z*sin(c*x) - cos(d*y)
znew = sin(x)
(with parameters a = 2.24, b = .43, c = -.65, d = -2.43) in a *.frm file
Thanks

The iFAQ has been updated.
http://home.san.rr.com/jayrhill/iFAQ/iFAQ.html
I hope Morgan and Paul don't mind being iFAQed.
Hi Paul Derbyshire and David E. Shanholtzer. Thank
you for the inquires of Dr. J. And I am fine. The
Dr. J series
http://home.san.rr.com/jayrhill/FotN/FotNindx.html
'disappeared' while the contest traffic was swamping the lists.
For the contest, I took a break from Fractint to explore
other fractal programs. My non-fractint contests entries,
while I thought they were nice, were a big flop. I must
say, I had no real understanding of what the images were
being created from (what formula or theory) and what
the color schemes were doing. Talk about wandering
lost in 20 dimensional universes. It was like a ride at
a fun park where around each corner is a pazzaz
scene unrelated to the one before. At least I sort of
know my way around Fractint. I have used it for about
12 years. That's what makes the Dr. J series possible,
the exploration of fractals with the very controllable
Fractint program. Thank you Tim.
Speaking of which, although Dr. J has been muzzled
lately, I have posted a few times. One about Kerry's
emboss effect (9/11/98), and one titled "Slide show of
the year!" (9/27/98). In October I vacationed in mountains
of Nevada and California where there was no electric
power (used batteries), no TV and only difficult to get
radio (read no radio), and no Internet. So I lost all touch
with 'reality' and also lost $3491 on the stock market.
(I had bought gold stocks, duh, and missed the big up
move in just about everything else!) Now I see the traffic
in Fractal-Art has settled to just Jim's FOTD, perhaps
we can get Paul Derbyshire to release Dr. J from kidnap.
(Paul, may I use that cute image you sent? Please
resend it to mailto:ehill1@san.rr.com).
However this list is something else. I have 3028 unread
messages. Sorry if that is an offense to the posters here.
But I am whelmed. I lost my grip about 8 months ago.
That was just after I had written that I read every posting
and viewed every par image. But it was like hanging on to
a rope while being towed behind a speed boat. Soon
I had to let go. I use Microsoft Internet Mail (part of IE 3)
which stores all the email on my hard disk (so it is not
back at the Internet server). My inbox file is 39Mb!!
It is all there, so I'll get to it some day. :-)
I think updating the subject lines once in a while would
help. Especially if a thread drifts off topic and then back
on to a new (on topic) topic. Observe I changed the
subject line of this post.
And here is a new topic. Was there not a fellow who
was trying to post every image (from those pars posted
here) on his web site? He had a bunch of thumbs of
my FOTD (he had asked permission) and some others.
Who was this and what's his site? And at what point did
he fail to keep up? :-) It would be at least a Gig of web
site by now. If this site is still keeping up with this list,
I want to reference it from my site!!
Cheers,
Jay Hill

Don't know about images, but Les St. Claire does collect the pars and
has them downloadable from his web site.

Hi. It's good to have you back.
The list messages do pile up, even for me
where I can whiz through it by deleting everything
I don't understand :-) I've been mostly viewing the
pars at the end of the month using Les St.Clair's
compilation, but you lose the back-and-forth on
the images which I think (along with the occasional
long math or background explanations) is the most
interesting part of the list.
The person who was putting
all the images on his web site gave up
in mid February but still has them posted.

Subject: (fractint) Weird slowdown
I'm having an annoying problem with Fractint 19.6 on Windows NT
workstation 4.0. Every time I generate an image, after about 8 seconds it
slows
down. Then, if I hit C (as if I'd wish to change colors) and then ESC, it
resumes
at the original speed. Then after 8 seconds, it slows down again. Anybody
ever found this weird symptom ? This happens in every Passes modes
(tesseral, boundary, 1,2,3, and guessing).
The system is a HP Vectra VE, and it has an integrated video controller,
reported by the control panel as SiS 6205 from SiS Corporation, with 1 MB of
video memory. I use it typically at SF5 (640x480x256)
Thanks for any info.

Thanks!!! Seeing the images other artists create with my formulas

Yes it is. I just checked it on WTF (
http://barley.electriclichen.com/cgi-bin/wtf )
Checking host: members.xoom.com port 80
(Which is really colo00-167.xoom.com with an IP address of
206.132.163.167)
Operating system: * SO desconocido, actualice
/usr/local/etc/queso.conf
Web server software: Apache/1.2.5
The third line means "Unknown Operating System, update
/usr/local/etc/queso.conf"
Anyway, I like Xoom MUCH MORE than Geocities... I like to see my HTML source
unmodified after I upload it...

Aha... that explains it then. Apache may be a stable, well-behaved, robust
httpd... fat lot of good that does if it's running under Windows NT, and NT
chooses to hang.
