BTW, since I do not know how to generate a par from a 3d spherical
projection, this is a work around. I like the effects of "Summer" when
saved as a gif, loaded as a 3d sphere with coarseness, surface roughness
= 0 and using this color map:
colors=rqv8Xh<<16>CmqDnrEnq<<8>TgnUgnWho<<13>vvv<<14>WWhUUgVVgWXgYZg<<45>pnrq\
ospmq<<12>cRSZ00_32<<12>pmqrqurnu<<14>m0l3Kl<<14>rqu<<64>4H_4H_4I`<<14>8Xg
}
With the above color map loaded onto the above image and cycling the
image it might better be described as a living crystal ball, for usage
only by the adepts of the High Arts. :)

Let's put this in context: I want to export lsystem fractals in a way
that common applications can import them. lsystem fractals can be
drawn with 'move to (x, y); line to (x1, y1);'. WMF can do this. I'm
certain DXF can, too.
(Perhaps this has expanded into a general discussion of the relative
merits of different vector graphics file formats. If that is the case,
may I humbly suggest that it is slightly off-topic?)

Is it also the case that any program that can read a DXF file can just
as easily read a PS file? I think not. PostScript is pretty hard to
read -- you have to implement a lot of non-graphics stuff.

Well, in five years or so, everyone will be running Linux, which will
let you run Fractint either in a window or full-screen (like DOS).
Then you will be happy. :)
A couple of OS/2 folks -- one an IBMer since early childhood -- on
systalk@ml.org have just switched from OS/2 to Linux. Just because IBM
doesn't care about OS/2 anymore.

Hahahahahaha....
(Sorry for that) :-)
Linux is nice for 'us', but for newbies: guess M$ will win... But we have
had this discussion before.
But is it already possible (or will it be possible in the near, near future)
to run dos apps using vesa or so under Linux?

Here's another one! Be careful with your words. There might be more of
them out there than you think. And being a proud owner of a Matrox
graphics card, my use of OS/2 allowed me to skip all of the week-long
diskussion about running Fractint with it under much less exotic OSes.

I doubt it. I went to a Win98 presentation night before last. All the
features they're touting (to new users!) are second-best to Linux.
Have you seen KDE or GNOME lately?

I don't have dosemu. Yes, you can run DOS apps under Linux; yes, even
graphical apps; no, I don't know how good the SVGA support is; no, I
haven't tried Fractint under dosemu yet.

Subject: (fractint) The Return of the Triple Mutant
Paul Carlson's visualization of my formula is very interesting indeed. It
really shows a lot of what is going on behind the scenes. And furthermore
you can make quite nice images with it when you change the colormap.
The basic idea of the TripleMutant formula can, of course, be applied to
any formula being iterated, so don't hesitate to try it out.
I have made another Mandelbrot-based experiment using this method. This
time, not the iterated function is overlayed by the triple function field,
but the constant c. This allows us to put the time consuming calculation
into the pre-iteration routine. Apart from giving us new worlds to explore
this should speed up calculation significantly. But "unfortunately" it
does not. Because with this change the Mandelbrot set itself (The Lake) is
being transformed into fractal dust when the centers of functional
activity approach zero. This forces the use of periodicity=0. When playing
around with the formula you should also note that visible changes already
happen when the three points are significantly farther away than with the
first formula.

Subject: (fractint) Double Ellipse Formula
comment {
As I walked to work this morning I designed another formula
(I can't help it - I'm addicted) and so when I got home tonight I
sat right down to type it in and try it out. I haven't had time
yet to do anything except locate a few images that look promising
at 320x200 resolution (all I've had time for) but I thought I'd
pass it along to you to see what you think of it.
The formula uses two elliptical orbit traps and two color ranges,
one range for each trap. By setting the major and minor axes
equal to each other the traps become circular (this was done in
the 2Ellm03 and 2Ellm04 pars). All of the images have a midget
at their center except 2Ellm07 which is a spiral.
All the pars should plot reasonably fast with the possible
exception of 2Ellm08. I just got a hint of what this one will
look like (it should be run at 1024x768 resolution) and I
think it may have a very interesting texture with a very tiny
midget at its center.
Anyhow, I hope you like it.

Good nice, rainy evening
Is there a book or list or doc of any sort that gives the nomenclature of
the Mset? I keep reading comments about the first bud past the alligator's
mouth - or some such, and people seem to know the location that is being
referred to.
And is there a like nomenclature for the basic Julia image?
Thank you.

Going through other Spanky pages I find the Fractint page has been moved to
/www/fractint/fractint.html, but that still doesn't explain my getting a 403,
as a 404 is what should have occurred!

Ray,
There is an excellant web page with this information. It is entitled "PGD's Quick
Guide to the Mandelbrot Set" I bookmarked it as soon as I saw it. It will help you
out.

If you have any trouble getting there e-mail me back.
Enjoy it.

Subject: (fractint) gravipop
(nice par at end of message)
Hi, I was inspired by Bob Margolis' popcorn_julia
series. I really liked the effect and thought I would try to
apply the popcorn transfomation to some other formulas,
like gravijul. I made several attempts at "gravipop"
but was unable to come up with anything except a blank
screen or hash. Can anyone just send me a workable
version of Popcorn Jul? (It works as built-in but I have
been unable to reproduce it to fool around with it.)
Fractint says:
x=x-h*sin(y+tan(3*y))
y=y-h*sin(x+tan(3*x))
applied to the classic Julia formula. I tried to
just reproduce popcorn-jul to see if I had the
concept but was unable to make it work. I'm not
sure if I'm just missing a little something or a major concept
in formula writing- a little unclear what is initialization and what is
iterating when there are several variables.

Hello fractal lovers,
I've been observing the list for a while now and thought maybe I
should contribute a little *art* for all to see. I've been quite simply
obsessed with Fractint for about 2 yrs now, and I see no end to the amount of
images which it is capable of producing. Unfortunately, I know nothing of the
math involved, or how to create my own formulae just yet, but that doesn't
stop me from having loads of fun making eye-appealing images every single day!
I hope I'm posting these 2 parmfiles correctly. This is my first contribution,
so forgive me if it doesn't work. :)

Jim,

One small tip - Fractint stops recognizing an entry name at the first
blank, "(", or "{". Your entry will therefore appear in menu screens as
simply "The". You can get the whole name to show by using underscores, i.e.
The_Sun_God.

OT but brief: Some http servers are configured (or can be set) to always
return 403 or always 404, mainly as a security feature to prevent using
http to probe the filestructure of the server. Some others, of course,
are just written a bit carelessly.

Just now getting around to reading some "older" posts. You can
automatically include the resolution in your comments by using the
following:
/_$xdots$x$ydots$_/
Which should come out as showing the horizontal-res, then an 'x',
followed by the vertical-res. (Example: 640x480)
Same goes for including the '$version$' to show what level of FractInt.
