Subject: Re: (fractint) Re: Tierazon
I can't think of anything better than a meld of Tierazon and Fractint.
Both have wonderful features. As a programmer, Tim, I think you ought to check
out the Tierazon/Flarium site because it's obvious that Steve has really done
some excellent work in the area of bringing out programs that take advantage of
the 16mil color environment. Still to go....IMHO....is the precise control I
have when I use Fractint. Tough problem as far as I can tell and one definely
worth everyone's while.
I sorta keep posting my set of "ideals" (in my notion of importance)
1. Color control a la fractint
2. Proportioning and skewing
3. Multi-tasking
4. Some degree of color smoothing as offered by truecolor
Both Fractint and the Flarium/Tierazon family offer an excellent range of
formulas and coloring methodologies....i.e. stalks, bubbles, ribbons, etc.
My bottom line is a good image....one that makes you sit back from the screen
and say......ooooooooooooo.......
And since I've got excellent programs (free even!!!) already....I can only look
forward

Yeah, hundreds of them. The Internet is mostly composed of them, in
fact. Few are as excellent as Fractint, though.
They've been in the news a lot in the last month.
See http://www.opensource.org/ or http://freshmeat.net/ for more info.

On Unix or Linux maybe. On the PC platform source is often not
available for fractal programs, and these days freeware is the
exception, not the rule. Lately there have been some new fractal
programs that are not freeware. Tierazon is an exception.

Last month ehh, I'm impressed! :-) I'm not sure when Bert Tyler
first posted Fra386 1.0 with source, but probably about a decade
ago.

Most FTP sites have an incoming directory; you can upload there but not
download. the admin checks anything infectable (Word docs, exes) or that could
be a Trojan (exes, batch files, shell scripts) before moving them to the pub
dir, but moves anything that is guaranteed harmless (frm, par, map) instantly
when updating every day or three. Can't you do this?

I also like the Flarium/Tierazon's range of colouring methods; I did
consider writing formulas illustrating them in Fractint to see how they'd
go there (24bit colour notwithstanding), but found myself baffled by the
documentation. It's not the mathematical notation that's scaring me off,
but I'd like a bit of coherency and background explanation.
Heigho, I'll download the source and see if I can piece anything together
from that...

Yes, most open-source programs have been written for Unix.
I'm interested to hear that `freeware is the exception, not the rule'.
While open-source freeware was pretty rare when I was a DOS guy
(1985-1991 or so), freeware was ubiquitous.

You are correct.
Most of the open-source programs that have been mentioned in the news
so much in the last month are older than that. It's just that the news
media have picked up on the idea in the last month because of Netscape
and Linux.

Paul,
Apparently you missed the "ask me privately" portion of my message. Since
you asked publicly, I'll answer you publicly. (Next time, read the message
before offering a knee-jerk response, OK?)
- Most FTP sites have an incoming directory; you can upload there but not
- download. ... Can't you do this?
I specifically stated that I would not create a place where people could
both upload and download files. Such a free-for-all file exchange is
begging for abuse--not so much from the crowd on this list, but from others
who may discover its location. Thus uploading and downloading to the same
directory is not something I'm going to set up.
You are correct that most FTP sites have an incoming directory. However,
that means I have to check the directory for incoming files, which is not
something I normally do. There is no prompting that something new is in
the incoming directory. On the other hand, if people e-mail me their
files, I'll know right away, because e-mail is something I do regularly
check. Moving a file from my e-mail to the ftp site is just as much work
as moving it from an incoming directory, so I might as well set things up
in the most convenient way possible for me. Add to that that it's easier
for most people to learn how to attach a file to e-mail than to figure out
an FTP program, and that downloading from an FTP site is as easy as
clicking on the published URL for the file, and I hardly think this
solution is inelegant.
Now, if you have FURTHER questions about this policy, ASK ME PRIVATELY.

I DO however care a very great deal about UI design and software

I could comment at length about Tierazon/Flarium's UI. In short though,
despite both being GUIs', neither yet comes near to Fractint's (DOS) ease
or speed of use.
TDB. I'm getting ready at long last to dual boot my NT 4 box at home with
DOS just so that I can run FRACTINT! I've just got to be able to play
with all of these lovely sounding PARs.

addressing the comment to Jay rather than the list?

Luis, I'm also new here ... actually I've been lurking for about a month
and this list is annoying me intensely ... I just don't have time to
keep up! Still 92 unread posts and over 70 pars saved but not yet run.
You have to get the latest version from spanky.triumf.ca, but it may be
very slow as you're outside the US - sorry, North America. You can get
frain195.zip from Simtel.net - ftp://ftp.ip.pt/pub/simtelnet/ - I don't
see a WWW mirror in Portugal but try
http://ftp.globalnet.co.uk/simtel.net/ which will allow you to use the
search engine. Sorry, I don't know the exact ftp path.
Who submits fractint to Simtel? If somebody could get 19.6 there it
would be a great help to the ROTW.
Hi to everyone else too.

Jiho,
look at http://home.earthlink.net/~mrob/muency/boxcountingdimension.html
And the person who recently asked about Hausdorff dimension (I deleted
the post) may want to look at the link on that page that defines it.
I find this site "Mu-Encyclopedia" very interesting from a mathematical
point of view. Follow a few definitions and you'll soon see if you
share this interest. It's about as different from most fractal sites as
you can get ... focuses exclusively on the M set with a few references
to Julias, and presents images in ASCII-art, but so what!
I would really like to know if such topics *are* general interest on
this list.

Welcome on board Joe!!!
I know what you mean about slow download times....and especially to and from
your area. I've tried downloading stuff from oz a few times and it can get
really frustrating. However, here's one general hint for those outside the US
who need to download from servers located here......try timing your downloads
for Saturday or Sunday mornings, no later than 11 AM Pacific Daylight Time (2PM
Eastern Daylight time; 7 PM British Summer Time). I've never had a problem with
the web (to any server, worldwide) if I keep to that time. Earlier is better.
If you can't keep up with the pars and formulas being posted, you can download
those from previous months at Les St. Clair's site. Definetly the lazy person's
way to fractal!!!
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Les_StClair/
But not all the pars will run with Fractint 19.5, so get the later version.
Hope you have lots of fun here...

Been there, very useful. The problem I have is not the download time
... because in fact I don't have email at home, I get the mail at work
and take my laptop home. I just don't have enough time to run them!
This may be something to do with being limited to a 486-DX4 75MHx,

And the ability to find frms in the par file is a great time-saver too.

Hi All!
I am trying to use partobat.exe for the first time on my new Pentium II and get
this error message:
Runtime error 200 at 0488:0091
I wrote and asked Michael Peters (the program's author) what I was doing wrong.
He replied:

Since he doesn't have an idea where the problem lies, he suggested that I ask
list members if they have encountered this and if anyone has a workaround or
suggestion to offer.
Does anyone have a clue?

When I tried Partobat, only opened it to check it out and closed it immediately, the
next time I ran Fractint a few minutes later it crashed my computer as it had never
done before. I lost all control and had to cut power and reboot. The error message I
got was: fatal error caused by WINOLDAP. Never heard of such a thing. I did not try
again. I have the latest version of Win95, but only a Pentium 166MMX, not Pentium
II. I use a Matrox Millenium II 8 MB video card.

I'm pretty sure WINOLDAP is a stub program win95 uses to run dos =
programs. I think it manages DOS memory and the window it uses, and =
other stuff.

Hi,
I've seen the seen problems with Pascal code. A simple pascal program of
mine didn't work on a P2-266. The problem turned out to be located in the
CRT (cathode ray tube) unit. Even if *no* procedure from crt is used in the
program, the
uses crt;
line already causes a Divide by zero error (I believe that's indeed RTE
200). This was in real dos, no dos window.
I was not able to fix it.

Hi, Janet!
I usually run Fractint under DOS, not in the background of Windows. If
I exit Fractint (Hit the "D" key), and try to run it in DOS, I get that
message. Also, If I go to the "MS-DOS prompt" in Windows, it won't run
right. But If I "Shut down and restart in MD-DOS mode" (through the
Start button) it runs fine for me.
I have a Pentium (not II), and Win95 if that helps.
If it doesn't help, sorry! That's all I have to offer!
Good luck!
Linda
