Just one more idea - isn't there a unit of time which corresponds to the Planck
length? How many of these units of time have passed since the begnning of the
universe? Lessee...
Lee Smolin describes the Planck unit of time as 10exp-43 seconds. Now,
according to Roger Penrose, there is a debate as to the actual age of our
universe, with estimates ranging from 6x10exp+9 to 1.5x10+10 years. Assuming
the younger figure is correct, then the number of Planck time units that have
passed since the Beginning is ~ 1.89x10exp+62
Hmmm... not a very big number, says Fractint! :)

True. It's often more subtle than that. Once a slightly corrupted image=

the PNG images. If you downloaded a PNG image, a viewer such as QPV can
view it from DOS.

Apples and Oranges! Gif displays 256 colors at 8 bits per pixel. An 8-b=
it
PNG usually compresses a lot tighter than a GIF. But these particular PN=
G
images are Trucolor with 24 bits per pixel! The PNG images are also at
1024x768, while the other 90% of the images on the site are smaller 800x6=
00
gif images. All of the PNG images also have a 1024x768 "embossed" JPG
image associated with them, which look slightly different, but CAN be
viewed if you can't see the PNG files. There are also PNG plug-ins
available for both Netscape and Microsoft Explorer, which I hope somebody=
here can tell us where we can find them on the net.

I got a perl script from Rich Thomson. Here it is; hope this can help
you.
Peter
- --- begin of Rich Thomsons message ---
Here's the script, hope you find it useful. One thing it does that
partobat doesn't do is resume a partially completed image. Unlike
partobat, it doesn't require any other DOS executables (it uses DOS
files as markers to know which images have completed). The usage is
like this:
perl partobat.pl [-u] [-o outfile] parfile1 ... parfileN
par1=value1 ... parM=valueM
- -u Enforce unique savename for each image
- -o Specify name of output batch file [stdout is default]
parfile Names of parfile to process. Everything goes into one batch
file.
par=value
You can add extra parameters to override anything in the
parfile you don't want (video mode, savename, showdot, etc.)
If something doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll be happy to
explain.

For Lee,
Same problem with IE4.
Solution : you must have your PNG pic included into an empty (except the
pic) HTML page, and it will be displayed with IE4. I think that the same
will occur with Netscape.

Okay folks, sorry. The inconvenience of having to resend the .frm

Subject: (fractint) Fractal Dimensions CDROM
Hi Fractalliers and Fractaholics,
I'd like to take this opportunity to announce my fourth commercial
CDROM of fractal art, "Fractal Dimensions". This new CD has 2628 of my
latest and best images made with Fractint, and is made to be accessible
via your CD-drive and your favorite web browser. Most of the images are
800x600 resolution, although there are around 150 trucolor PNG files at
1024x768. Pars and formulas for all of the images are included. But,
if you wish to check it out over the internet, the ENTIRE CD (650+Mb) is
now on-line at the following super web-site courtesy of Michael Taylor:
http://fractal.mta.ca/fractals/skinner/skinner.htm
I am selling the CD directly for $39.95, but for a limited time, I
will sell to readers of Compuserve's Graphdev section, the Fractint,
Fractdev, and Fractal-Art Mailing Lists at a 25% discount ($29.95). Just
mention that you saw the offer here. With 393 html pages full of
thumbnails and 2628 images 800x600 or larger, this is less than one cent
per html page or image. Add $5. s&h for USA orders, $10 (U.S.) outside
the USA for priority mail delivery. New Mexico residents add 5.8%
sales tax. Checks OK, no credit cards. Of course, you can download it
(650Mb) off of the web site for free by visiting a different page of
thumbnails and associated images daily for the next 15 months!
Lee H. Skinner
P.O. Box 14944
Albuquerque, NM 87191
Please allow a reasonable time for delivery, but I'll get them out ASAP.
The CDs are available now and will be shipped Priority mail.
This is a PC CDROM and may not be viewable on other platforms such as
the MacIntosh without proper software.
You can also use Fractint to view the gifs (and zooms into them, etc.)
directly from the CD. You will need other viewers to view the PNG and
JPG images. QPV is a DOS viewer, Paintshop Pro or Graphics Workshop will=
view them under Windows 3.1 or Win95. You can also get a PNG plug-in for=
your browsers.

The mailer is the mx mailer from mad-goat software
the tcp/ip interface is multinet v 3.4 from TGV and that
handles ftp access as well.
I think it is a credit to all the people responsible for the
above software packages that allow a computer that has the performance
level of about an Intel 386 system to compete in today's internet. I
think Dave Jones at OSU should be particularly hilighted. His server
has to be one of the most robust and efficient servers ever designed.
Too bad it's only for VMS.
I apologise for replying to the above off topic thread, but I
thought others in the list might be interested.
Cheers,
Noel Giffin

Subject: (fractint) Lee's PNG Ima
Hi All,
Regarding the web-site, here are summarized some of the comments
regarding the PNG files and my response to to them:
>> "Solution : you must have your PNG pic included into an empty (except =
the
pic) HTML page, and it will be displayed with IE4. I think that the same
will occur with Netscape."
- ----- Jean-Pierre louvet : louvet@iuta.u-bordeaux.fr<<
Hopefully, this is not the ONLY workaround. Read on:
>> "People seem to be having a problem viewing Lee's Png images
from your web server. I'm not sure what web server software you are
using but you are going to have to add the png format type to the
list of recognized suffixes in your servers configuration file.
You will need a line something like the following:
=2ENEXT .png image/png BINARY
You will have to restart the server as well be for this
comes into effect as well I imagine."
- ----- Noel Giffin to Michael Taylor (who is temporaily away)
This would be a good fix if it works! But Michael may not be back
for a while.
" Thanks so much for the great batch of stuff you just put up. I tried=
using them though and got a failure on the video mode. You seem to be
calling out a mode not listed with a shortcut on my version of Fractint.
I am running 19.6 on a WIN95 machine. ! I figured that you are using
5-5-5 Truecolor, so I tried that. It generates, but it looks nothing
like your thumbnails. Any suggestions? And what version Fractint do
you use?"
- ----- Marty Krikorian
You cannot as yet view PNGs with the current version of Fractint. Until
version 20 is out, PNGs must be viewed with a browser plug-in, Paintshop
Pro, QPV, Graphics Workshop or any other PNG viewer.
>> "The PNG Live plugin

Lee, where is your gallery, so I can check it out, pls., with yr images?"=
- ----- Peter Jakubowicz <pfjakub@earthlink.net>
The gallery is at: http://fractal.mta.ca/fractals/skinner/skinner.htm
Peter, does this plug-in solve the problems accesing the PNGs at
Michael's site??
At this point, I cannot make any corrections to the CD as I have just rec=
eived
them from the the duplicator. But, compared to viewing the images from m=
y
web site, you view everything at light-speed on the CD!

For some reason the plug-in works fine at the Spanky site, but the images
opened in Picture Publisher 7 (my graphics editor) instead at Michael's
site <???> Did he arrange things, so the images are downloaded to one's own
disk instead of just being viewed on site?

Peter,
- For some reason the plug-in works fine at the Spanky site, but the images

Then it's not working fine, it's just opening the file in Windows and
hoping Windows knows what to do with it. (Which it does, because PP7
supports PNG files and when it's installed it registers with Windows that
it will handle those files.)
Using IE4, I can only view PNG files when they are referenced by an <IMG>
tag in an HTML file; a link directly to a PNG file will bring up the normal
"Open/Save" dialog for file types that IE can't handle on its own. Go figure.
Personally, I think it's premature to use PNG files on a web site, but
given the nature of this particular site (an online mirror of a CD-ROM)
it's understandable. :)

No. The plug-in worked at the Spanky site (I viewed the images in the
browser. It was at that other site (*Michael's*) where it opened in PP7.

Subject: (fractint) Two-piece Jigsaw Puzzle
Here's a formula that produces Julia sets that I find fascinating.
The Julia sets produced by the two accompanying pars are not
particularly pretty since they only use two colors, but I did them
this way to show what I think is mind-boggling about the images.
Imagine a jigsaw puzzle with only two pieces, each piece having
infinitely complex edges. When fitted together the two pieces fit
perfectly - no gaps. Now, here's the mind boggling part: the two
pieces are identical! I don't know - maybe I'm too easily impressed,
what do you think?
These images take a while to complete - the minimum number of
iterations for the first one is 1,000 and for the second one
is 2,000. I suggest you try them at 640x480 resolution.
There are several other (faster and prettier) ways to render this
formula that I'll post sometime later, but give this a try.

Umm... Isn't that a pretty big number? I doubt even Fractint could do a zoom
that high. :-P Recent theory places the diameter of the universe at
10^(10^12), which is kind of big. Let me see. Radius is one half diameter, so
2 times 10^((10^12)-1), circumference equal pi r squared, 10^((10^12)-1) times
3.1415926535 equals... umm... ::Tries his TI-92, but just gets "infinity":: A
REALLY BIG NUMBER. And seeing as how Fractint's limit is 10^1500 or so, I
doubt it could get that high. :-P

Subject: Re: (fractint) Lee's PNG Ima
Hi all,
I'm fairly certain that the problem with viewing Lee's PNG files from his
new gallery stems from a fault at the Mt. Allison web server. PNG is a relatively
new format and most servers browsers have to be told how to handle it. Servers
figure out how to serve files from file suffixes. ".txt" is ascii text, while
".exe" and ".gif" are binary types, etc. I'm not sure what server Michael is using,
but it looks like it is defaulting to sending the ".png" type as ascii text
so that peoples web browsers try to display it as an inline document. I'm
confident that when Michael returns and updates his configuration file, his server
will serve the PNG format without any trouble. I had to update mine in order to
do the same. PNG is not that widespread in its use yet, but I feel that it is
a useful format and superior in many ways to gif and jpg and only by using it
will it get propogated.
Cheers,
Noel Giffin

The formula is (2n+k)/pi where n is the vertical lines, and k is
related to the number of cycles in the image. If k=2/3, we get
one cycle. I'm getting a little more than 2 cycles with k=3.
Now note that this drops very deep into the seahorse valley,
namely to the 1200th bud. So the maxiter may have to be greater
and it will take a LONG time to compute. Try it as shown above,
to see if the maxiter is OK, look at 100 or so scan lines with
passes=2. If it is, switch to passes=g and wait......
Looks like a batch mode back ground job to me. :-(...es
