Those are used to draw the GUI. You wouldn't want to set a range of dim
colors and lose the editor window in it, would you? <g> You can change
what colors are blanked: move the selection boxes to two colors of your
choice and hit 'v', the X-ed out colors go there. The previously covered
colors are uncovered. I do this a lot, since I often have a range of
gradations start somewhere and end on the last color, so I put them
further back on the bottom row for instance so I can see the last color or
two easily.

The constant shows up as alimit. Mark the bifurcations r1, r2, r3, r4...
Then (r3-r2)/(r2-r1) is not f, nor is (r4-r3)/(r3-r2), but the sequence
a1 = (r3-r2)/(r2-r1), a2 = (r4-r3)/(r3-r2), a3 =... is a convergent

That's all? <vbg>

Well then, it seems I was the only one that had no problems with the
attachment, at least none that I can remember. I had no glitches other
than the usual random "can't connect to the server right now." Must be
because the server here runs OpenVMS and has the power to handle stuff
like that. Or perhaps that's due to the $20,000 yearly fee... <g>
(minus scholarships) Not that I'm going to endorse it, I'm just saying
that it didn't affect me.
Of course, this means I have to WORK here to continue this excellent
service after I graduate!
Oops, I lied... There was ONE problem. Unzipping it made all the
formula names in ALL CAPS and thus useless on XFractint. Just shows how
much difference there is between DOS and Linux. :)
Can we consider this topic closed now, except for a possible rebuttal?

I had to download a VESA 2.0 driver (Scitech Display Doctor) a while back,
and when I try to run Fractint in 800x600x256 mode with it running, the image
all gets rendered near the top of the screen and wraps back to the top when it
gets about a fourth of the way down the screen. Needless to say, this does NOT
look very much like the Mandelbrot set. Does anyone know any way to fix this
problem? (If there's another driver I can use that's free/shareware, I won't
complain. That "Please register" message that SDD pops up is VERY annoying.)

Hi all,
There's a couple of interesting features built into Fractint which seem t=

be sadly negelcted these days.
I'm referring to the "3D transform" and "3D overlay" options. =
I dug out a selection of my old favourites and placed them on a new page =
at
my fractal web site:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Les_StClair/
Why not drop by and take a look?
Has anyone else got any Fractint 3D transforms or overlays that they'd li=

to share?
Here's a couple of my examples (I'll apologize now for anyone who gets
these pars with the dreaded "=3D3D" disease, as this will be especially
confusing since the "3D=3Dyes" bits are supposed to be there!)
BTW, it's best to render the sets using the stated resolution (1024x768).=

I know of at least one (serious) fractal program written using Delphi.
It's not out yet, though.

I played around with them while exploring what FractInt could do, but I
have never been terribly thrilled with my results. The rotation axes seem
awkward to deal with, and the polygons are not always drawn in the correct
order, leading to overlap in some cases. The necessity of using POT files
for smooth landscapes (smooth is a must for me) eliminates the possibility
of using most fractal types, as well as deep zooms.
The images on your page are nice, though.

Hi Team Fractals;
Les' message reminds me that two years ago our famous leader, Tim
Wegner, came out with the 2nd Ed. of Image Lab which taught how to use
the image processing programs Fractint, POV-Ray, Polyray, Piclab, Image
Alchemy, and other programs. Another tome, Ray Tracing Creations (2nd
ed., 1994), by Chris Young and Drew Wells, went to great depth in
showing how to use POV-Ray's many features.
Would it be feasible to combine the features from some of the above
mentioned programs in Fractint 20? I believe they would enhance
Fractint's 3D options, especially if they're all combined into one
program.
Any thoughts, Tim and company?
Bob Margolis

Oh ya. Back in the dark ages (1986), I frac'd in whatever I had access to,
including Fortramp, Pascow, and BASICK. Hey, algorithms is algorithms.
I know some are easier to write in and some run faster, but they *all* work!
I even did fractals in "zebra stripe" mode on monochome monitors.
Mandelbrot did *his* first rendition of the z^2 set on one of those clunky
IBM cylinder-head printers. (I know, most of you are asking "a *what*?"
The characters are machined in rows on a spinning cylinder that spans
the page, with character selection done by a horizontal array of hammers
synchronized to the cylinder's rotation. The beast weighed about the
same as a VW Bug). Even the best of us are sometimes forced to
make do with suboptimal solutions.

VERY interested in a raytrace/fractal combo program (drooooooooooool)
In wandering around the fractal loop and reading about raytrace, I've come
across the idea that the two are related....yes???
3. Are there lessons somewhere about how to use the 3d features in
Fractint? I'd love to be able to make images like those at Les' site. Is it
hard? I need VERY step by step instructions......documentation usually just
baffles me since I'm not familiar with the lingo for the most part.

I doubt it, but I recently found a copy at a second-hand bookseller -- it's
very good; I'd say grab it, if you see it. The documentation/tutorial for
POV-RAY, which may be downloaded at http://povray.org/ is excellent, as is
the raytracer; also the newsgroup comp.graphics.rendering.raytracing is
very helpful.

Actually, I have the first and second editions of the books I mentioned
in my prior message as well as the first and second editions of Fractal
Creations by Fractalmeister Wegner and Bert Tyler. The latter is the
Fractint "bible." Unfortunately none of these is in print, but sometimes
can be found through book dealers selling remainders, such as Edward R.
Hamilton bookseller, Falls Village, CT 06031-5000.
I would suggest first of taking a run over to www.amazon.com and do a
search for Image Lab and see what terms they have for getting
the book. They will try to find a secondhand source where they can
obtain a book for you. I've been a longtime customer of both Hamilton
and Amazon and am highly pleased with both.
Good luck in your hunt.

He left out the important info that there are vast numbers of amazing
images, a whole cd-rom's worth, with all the pars and frms necessary.
Especially good are the images under 4tent, 4astm, 4asml, and 4fender (I
found it a breath-taking experience viewing these in quick succession at
1024x768). If you wait to hear more on monday before checking it out, you
will regret your slowness.
Les is far too modest in his announcement.
One minor note, the URL for the 4les5i.par file is incorrect on the site
(where it is given as 4Les5i.par). Easy to handle though.
Run, don't walk!

Yes. 3D works by reading in a GIF file, interpreting colors as
heights, and writing to the screen after doing a 3D transformation.

I wrote Fractint's 3D capabilities from first principles when I knew
absolutely nothing about it. I stopped when I learned just enough to
get it working. For a while there was one other developer who
worked on it with me, but with this exception, no other developer has
ever tackled it, and I have never returned to 3D because of all the
other Fractint interests I have.
POV-Ray has a height field capability that works much better than
Fractint's 3D. A height field is an array of heights rather than
colors. Fractint's 3D capability can be thought of as converting an
image to a height field and manipulating it in three dimensions. You
can create a fractal in Fractint and transform it to 3D in POV-Ray.
This works extraordinarily well. The downside is that learning ray
tracing just to do this one thing presents a steep learning curve
most folks won't attempt.
I have no plans to personally work more on Fractint's 3D. Note that
the 3D feature is a post process that doesn't really need Fractint; a
separate program would work just as well. Thus someone could program
this without having to wrestle with all fractint's legacy code.
Folks, take that as a challenge!
I have added Julibrot-like 3D objects to POV-Ray. I highly
recommend this capability to folks here. It is worth learning how
to use POV-Ray just to render 3D fractals. Both quaternion and
hypercomplex fractals are possible. POV-Ray uses an arnbitrary
slicing plane to reduce 4D to 3D; fractint is limited to slicing
along an axis plane.
Here is a case where Fractint could be enhanced. The 3D
Julibrot fractals should be tied to 2D fractals, so you can use 2D
fractal generation to explore for good 3D fractals. The current depth
modulation (coloring pixels according to virtual distance from the
viewer) is limiting. It would not be too hard to color pixels using
angle to a light source, as is done with Fractint's 3D.
I WILL return to the Julibrots eventually, though I think this is
less important than adding truecolor. In fact, 3D can *use* truecolor
to good effect.
Finally, remeber, any brave person is welcome to dive in and try
these things <g!> The 3D source is mostly in one file. It's not too
hard to understand. Much of what is needed is an interactive user
interface.
Tim

It's called "C". Why, I don't know; perhaps "A" and "B" were bogus?
However, it's the standard programming language these days, and you're
right: it looks NOTHING like BASIC. Mostly, it has structure :-)

The PAR attached below seems to hang Fractint 19.6 a short way into the
fourth pass using guessing at 1024x768x256. At this point, the image
ceases to make progress and Fractint stops responding to such keys as x,
tab, and esc. It becomes necessary to kill the DOS box. I had it saving
partially complete versions of this image, using savetime=10; when I
loaded the most recent autosave it computed for about five minutes, then
hung again at the same exact spot...
