The incidental fact that you give your own machine a hostname is not
precisely the same as having that hostname registered on a DNS server,
although the distinction is somewhat subtle because in some environments
a DNS server will automate this.
Reverse-resolving DNS names is a fairly reliable way to prevent IP
spamming and thus a basic security measure for a secure ftp server. It's
unfortunate, but if they have private areas on their ftp server, it's
quite understandable....

First, an apology for sending my last post (about DNS servers) to the
list. I didn't mean to; I'm just hardly awake and got careless.
At any rate, so that I can pretend to be writing a meaningful message,
I'd like to open up the question of palette editing to general
discussion. In my experience the editor is somewhat awkward to use, and a
number of people have cited specific improvements they'd like in it. How
do you think the palette editor should be redesigned, if it should? Or
would running fractint in a multitasking environment, where you could use
a separate editor in the window next door, make this somewhat pointless?

Perhaps I should have told Noel Giffin about it directly; after all, his
page has the link to it!

I want slider controls for the RGB values. THat would make things much
easier. I don't care if another window pops up or not (although it
would be real easy to do in X). Does anyone remember "Chaos: the
Software" by Autodesk? That had a nice editor (though only 16 colors!)
with slider bars. I'd like to see something like that, whether in the
same window or in a seperate one.

Everyone who is sending their "wishes" to this list should instead use
the fractint wish list web page at

The wish list is maintained by one of fractint's volunteer developers

Has anyone tried out the freestyle mode of the palette editor? I put it in
a while back in V18 but whenever I explain it to someone the almost inevitable result is "wow! I never knew that was
there!" it allows an almost totally keyboard free mode of operation and you can find a tutorial buried in the docs
(enter edit mode, hit F1 and look near the end of the help screen).
In addition there's a little known benefit (probably undocumented..oops!) in that even when not in freestyle mode you
can vary the colour components with the mouse... double clicking the right mouse button changes from R-G-B dragging up
and down with the left button will do a coarse colour adjustment and left to right with the right button down is a fine
adjustment.. not a very handy combination but (for various reasons which I've forgotten by now )it was the best
available :-)
I'm open to any suggestions on improving freestyle mode, having transparent colour bands is one possibility for instance
and I'd love it if anyone could come up with a decent way of defining colours with a mouse! all suggestions are welcome
either here or (preferably) also at the fractint wishlist (now hooked up to some decent backbone bandwidth you'll be
pleased to hear!)

Cheers,
Robin.

Subject: (fractint) spanky fractal database ups and downs
Hi everyone,
I just thought I'd let the list know that spanky.triumf.ca
which I use to host the fractint pages and my fractal database has
been rather intermittent since Saterday. One of it's power supplies
has been tripping on and off on over temperature. I've traced the
problem down to a bad cooling fan and have replaced it. It seems to
be working okay at the moment but there are several more fans that
are rather questionable. (spanky is 10 years old). I hope that things
are back to normal but please be understanding if it goes out again.
To put things in perspective, this is the first time I've
had to power off or reboot the system in over five months. In that time
it has served about 12 million webpages/files/ or documents.
Hoping to continue this reliable service.
Regards,
Noel Giffin

Yes, but on this list suggestions go directly to Tim! <g>
Seriously, though, the suggestions on the list seem to be more directed
towards improvements on current features, i.e. a better palette editor,
while the wish-list page has suggestions for completely new features,
i.e. a magnifying-glass type zoom box. I think both wish-lists have a
place, though the suggestions on the list appear to be more easily
implementable and/or realistic. The wish list page is mostly stuff like
Windows ports, Mac ports, automatic fractal movie generation,
true-color... Perhaps my palette editor with sliders idea belongs there
too! :-) Then again, I'm not demanding a rewrite of the whole program,
just a rewrite of one part...

Personally, I don't have any problems with the Fractint palette editor. The
only actual bug I've seen in it is that when you open the palette window a
couple of the colors change to white until you close it. It's slightly
irritating, but not enough to really require a major revision, IMO.

And you can edit these by moving the palette over several (use ',' or '.'
keys)
put in the colors and move everything back.

This is a good idea. I don't have time time to read all messages
carefully, so posting wish list items is a waste of bandwidth. You
could email me, but the advantage of using Robin's web page is your
idea is captured. We DO read the ideas posted on that page.
In another message Justin suggested that some wish list discussion
here is OK, because list discussion could come up with some good
ideas. There is some merit to this, I ask only that you use
restraint, and DON'T broadcast ideas to the list because you think
I'll read it. If you want to have a discussion of how to improve
fractint (or other fractal programs), fine, but please don't use the
list as a way to record your ideas. If there is a discussion, I
suggest members of the discussion post their conlusions to Robin's
page. Maybe the best approach is to assume I am too busy programming
fractint to read the list. It's not quite true, but close <grin!>
In a similar vein, I would like to declare all the discussion of
mailers and attachments off topic. Please take them to lists
dedicated to mailers and email problems. A few simple rules will
reduce unneeded bandwidth: stay on topic, and make sure your message
is of general interest. Any message you don't feel right about
probably shouldn't be posted e.g. "sorry to the bother the list with
this, but ..." is sure clue that a message shouldn't be posted.
Finally, I consider Rich Thomson to be a co-administrator. He has
my permission to comment on administration issues. (Both of us try
to minimize this.) For those who don't know (probably everybody
<g!>) Rich is the person who arranged the hosting by xmission of this
list, and has excellent sense about list issues, and a lot more
experience running list than I have. Thanks Rich!

actually have to w*rk as an alternative!!!!). But I've tried Flarium,
Iterations and downloaded Trumandel and they all seem to run
fine........different sort of programs than Fractint though so it's worth
the effort to establish a boot to DOS for when you feel like Fractinting.
Unfortunately my boot sector seems to have a prob now as well and I've had
a certain hesitation in explaining to our Help Desk that I need DOS so I
can do Fractals. <wide grin>. At the semi-official fractint wish list
site, a fully functional fractint running under nt is probably the #1
request......oh please ....oh please....save me from the evils of actual
w*rk!!!!!

Subject: Re: (fractint) Palette editing
I've gotten used to the palette editor and find it fairly friendly. Maybe
under Truecolor it would make sense for the colors to be in the more
standard RGB coding of 1 to 255, since many of us who run graphics programs
as well are used to seeing colors described that way. I found the palette
in Fractal Orbits a snap to use, but it's fairly similar to the Fractint
palette except for color nomenclature. It took me longer to figure out
what combination of RGB produced what approximate color in the gif-ish
approach fractint uses.
One feature I do sigh for is the ability to open two palettes at once so I
can compare them......I find myself all too often producing a palette which
I think of as "new" but which turns out to be remarkably similar to what I
already have......so then I have to go thru the tiresome process of
figuring out what to discard. It's funny how my color taste seems to run in
rather consistent cycles. I love the idea of some of the features
described in mmap....reversing colors is often exactly what I would like to
do.

I loathe slider controls!!! Hate...despise....spit!!!!!!! Dislike even.
I have spent much more time fiddling with those blankety blank sliders than
with any palette. <<curse....gag>> Can you tell I don't like them??? And I
have YET to produce a single fractal from the slider approach that comes
close to the stuff I get with fractint or fractal orbits which both have
the palette which provides such superb control. Who cares about easy if you
get yicky images? Find me a slider that can give you a single band of color
precisely where you want it and i MIGHT stop throwing up.

Spanky is a fantastic resource.....thank you so much. I'm continually
amazed that you manage to keep up with all the latest and greatest in the
world of fractals like you do....I find myself referring to your pages at
least once a week for all the "good stuff."
