In defence of my provider, which is the same Freenet Paul uses, I have had
no trouble sending out attached postscript files to a good number of folk
who have had no problems with any 'encoding' and these files are not
tolerant of extraneous material. The Freenet operates on text alone and
if you want something encoded, better do it before you upload it to send
and it better be text. Sorry to take up space, but I don't like to see
a pretty good, free service unjustly slagged. Of course if I get this and
it is full of a' a' at my other addresses, above, I'll admit my error.

Bud,
Thanks for posting the frms and pars. I too had wondered why it was
there 3 time. If folk repost for formatting, perhaps they could say at
the outset that the substance is unchanged. I had had not trouble with
any of the versions, but wondered if there was a substantive difference
among them.

I'm not sure what you mean by folded, but that is what I thought the
definition of a fractal was, too: until I read that while Mandelbrot's
original definition was that a fractal is a set whose H-B dimension was
greater than its topological dimension, he became dissatisfied with this,
because it did not emcompass a number of sets that were obviously
fractals. I couldn't think of any myself.
And never being one to let my own ignorance stand in my way, I asked. I
gather Mandelbrot is not a subscriber to this list.

Bummer.....maybe with the current crop of super fast processors and large
amounts of memory the ideas.....software wise....of "slow" and "fast" ought
to be re-thought by the fractint coding wizards. I have 48 megs of ram
myself ....but only a 100mhz processor....so the color cycling is
acceptable to me. But it does sound like the steps between "fast" and
"slow" need to be adjusted.

Because I am using such an antiquated machine (486/33) I can't seem to generate
the nine sections of my fractal image with makemig.bat and do anything else at
the same time. I have tried letting it run for 24 hours, but that still isn't
enough time. Is there a pause key or some combination that will let me switch
back to Win95 without losing data or otherwise screwing up the generated images?

Probably not ... I'd try booting to a DOS prompt and
running Fractint over night from there.
At least you got Fractint to run under W95. It won't on
my system! Fortunately, it still runs quite happily under
OS/2!

Maybe the information in the signature block is helpful to some. But that
info does not need to be repeated at the end of each message. I suggest a
first-of-the-month automatic post that reminds everyone about the nature of
the list. If you did that, I also suggest telling people where to find the

Janet,
I too have a 486/33 and what I do for slow multipart images is to run each of
the separate parts on their own. You can do this from the pars for each of
the frmig images which fractint generates when you save the par with
multiple parts.
You do not need to run the whole thing in one go. Once you have the
frmig's all generated then at a dos prompt give the commands that are at
the end of the makemig.bat file.
This way it does not matter if you finish in one fell swoop.

I'd recommend coding it to base its speed on the realtime clock.
Just as is done with any good real-time (as opposed to discrete
turn-based) computer game; all of mine track locations and velocities and
accelerations and impulses relative to real time and although they update
every cycle of the loop, they add say velocity divided by elapsed time to
position, and so forth, so a faster computer doesn't cause a faster game,
but a smoother one.

I use the 1600x1200 disk video mode all the time. If you then alt-enter it
to a window and set it to run in background, it will calculate and nothing
will be screwed up. The massive CPU usage will cause some software,
notably Microsoft Equation Editor (the gods know why) and Quake, too
become very slow or behave strangely. (I once wracked my brains over why I
was getting a ping of 18000 in Quake, then traced it to Fractint!) If you
set the Fractint window to 'suspend in background' when using these apps,
it will 'pause' and use little or no CPU until you undo the 'suspend in
background' command. This can be done on a windowed DOS app simply by
pushing in or out the button with a graphic like two windows, with the
rear window having a star on it. When that button is in it is running,
when it is out it is suspended unless it has the focus.

Here is a wish for the next fractint:
Have fractint check the first letter of the name of the frm it
needs when loading it, say "a" and then go first to the
corresponding orgform files, in this case, _a.frm and _a_dup.frm.
I suspect most of those maintaining a large collection of frms is
already using orgform and for those who are not, the delay to
check two files would be minimal. It would save going through
a lot of frm files most of the time.

This is already implemented in the developer's version and will be
available in the next release. The idea is that you can create a separate
directory for orgform files and specify which one it is in your
sstools.ini.

From: Kerry Mitchell <lkmitch@primenet.com>
Subject: (fractint) program to find cardioid boundary points
Here's a little BASIC utility to compute cardioid boundary points
for fractals of the z^exponent+c variety. You specify the exponent
(greater than 1), and an internal angle. From that, the boundary
point is computed. To do so, the program uses 2 relations:
f(z) = z^exponent+c = z
This means that z is a fixed point, which is a requirement of c
being on the cardioid. The second requirment is that the fixed
point be neutrally stable. That means that the derivative of f
with respect to z has a magnitude exactly equal to 1. This insures
that c will be on the edge of the cardioid, and not in the interior.
So, we require that:
f'(z) = exponent*z^(exponent-1) = exp(i*angle)
where "angle" is the internal angle that is specified, and "i" is
the sqrt(-1). Combining these 2 and solving for c (the desired point),
we get:
c = z - z^exponent, or
c = z * [1 - z^(exponent-1)].
This program uses the derivative condition to evalaute the two
factors in the last equation, and then multiplies them together.
The only tricky part is specifying the internal angle. It is typically
expressed in terms of "turns", where 1 turn is 2pi radians, or a full
circle. Using the fraction m/n turns will generate the point c which
is where the disk with Farey number m/n is tangent to the cardioid.
Thus, this point is both a fixed point and periodic with period n.
Since m/n is a rational number and 2*pi is irrational, the angle defined
by m/n*2*pi radians is an irrational number. Using rational numbers for
the angle will result in non-periodic points. One way to do this is to
change the value that is used for "pi". Inputting 0 in the program will
force the routine to calculate pi to its internal precision (3.14159...)
and will thus give a periodic point. Using 3, 3.25, or other rational
approximations to pi will give non-periodic points near the periodic point.
This can be useful if you like the general shape of the Julia set for
m/n = 1/3, but want a non-periodic orbit. Then, specify m/n = 1/3, but
use a different value (say 3, or 3.125) for the pi factor.
When the iteration exponent is larger than 2, then the internal angle
goes beyond 2*pi. In fact, it runs through (exponent-1)*2*pi radians.
To get to the angles beyond 2*pi, you can specify an angular offset.
This is given in terms of multiples of 2*pi, from 0 to (exponent-2).
If you know exactly what angle you want, you can bypass all this by
directly inputing it, in radians.
After the coordinates are calculated, you can opt to have them written
to a file. If you so choose, 2 sets will be written: one is in Fractint's
mandelbrot style, and is specified as a "center-mag=" triad, with the
magnification set to 1. This set will have "_man" appended to the name
of the parameter set which was previously specified. The other set is
written as a julia parameter, with "params=", and will be identified with
the "_jul" suffix.
The code is written in QuickBASIC and also works under QBASIC. If you
choose to have the parameters written to a file, you should check the
file afterwards to make sure that no extra spaces are there to cause
problems. And remember, it's worth exactly twice what you paid for it.

I've finally taken the time to really go through this, also
Jay Hill's letter of 1-13 and various posts by Paul
Derbyshire and Kerry Mitchell and others on finding
critical points. (not something I could do at 2 AM- I have
a lucid interval about every 2 weeks.) Thanks for taking
the time to write these. It's sometimes hard to write at the
right level, in between the "oh wow" of pop writing and the
too dense technical things- like, I think I can follow this but
why? It's also really nice to have the examples on Fractint
and to fool around with the orbits etc. I think " Chaos and
Fractals" by Peitgen et al is at a good level. Sometimes the
things that are over-simplified just become unintelligible.
