It does not matter. I don't know how large formula files can be, but
the last time I looked at the Fractint source code, Fractint was
*NOT* compiled in the protected mode (AKA "flat memory model").
It would be a bit faster in that mode BTW.
For that matter I've never understood why a version of Fractint
wasn't ever released that was optimized for the Pentium.
I'm not talking about highly-optimized hand-tweaked code,
just setting a switch in the C compile.
I'd do it for myself, but my Symantec C compiler chokes on the
Fractint source code.

Subject: (fractint) F.O.T.N. (Fractal of the Night) 5 Feb 1998 (FractoBall Field)
F.O.T.N. (Fractal of the Night) 5 Feb 1998 (FractoBall Field)=20
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
If it isn't one calamity happening to Dr. J, it is another, and=20
if neither he will make something happen. Take last night=20
as case in point. He survives a crash which destroys his=20
Car-dioid landing him in the hospital. He gets out of there=20
early the next day so he can watch the FractoBowl games=20
from the front row. And last night I find out he disrupted the=20
game (well actually the game was halted for a long boring=20
iteration decision). Anyway, he made the outrageous claim=20
that he could make borderline decisions about points being=20
in or out of the FractoBall field in just one iteration.=20
Now if you have ever waited a seeming eternity for Fractint=20
or any other fractoviewer to compute through the boundary=20
of a solid component, well maybe you know how Dr. J and=20
the other fans felt. But I have my doubts, after all, they have=20
to live with this. Their whole world is, as nearly as I can tell,=20
a construct of some mathematical exercise. =A0
Anyway, after the confrontation with officials which was=20
broadcast for all to see and hear (or however information=20
gets around in fractal space), Dr. J had to make good on his=20
boast. And so he has, according to the last email. =A0Wait =20
a sec while I put this into my Fractint-o-Viewer Model 19.6=20
here.... Let's see the formula file should look like...=20
WAIT a second. This formula is the one he was asking about=20
just yesterday in email!=20
1) =A0 =A0|2*sinh[(asinh(sqrt(-6.75)*c))/3]| <=3D 1=20
So that is how he does it. I bet he knew all along! =A0Just simply=20
evaluate with complex arithmetic in this function (Eqn 1),=20
involving hyperbolic functions of the field coordinates. If this=20
function evaluates to less than or equal to 1, the position is=20
on the field. =A0 Even a real world person can see how this would=20
really help. No long delays. Absolutely accurate judgment=20
calls. Boy, we could use that in some of our sports. =A0
Dr. J wants to plant darker grass (grass? oh yes fractal grass)=20
on the field. He will use this formula to quickly lay down the=20
seeds. We should be able to see this in Figure 1.=20
Let's see now, to make a formula file here...=20

I don't think it's the size of the _ile_ that's the issue here, but the
size of the _entry_. This seems to be a frequent source of confusion.
Checking the Fractint docs I find a note in the revision history. One of
the changes from 19.2 to 19.3 was
"Increased limit on number of operations in a formula entry from 250 to
over 2000. In most cases memory use is actually less than before
because of use of existing memory arrays."
Exactly what an "operation" is in this case I haven't yet figured out, but
it seems likely that Explode_M2 does exceed this limit.

All I can say is: YES YES YES!
Perhaps when this feature comes I'll be able to make a "4-dimensional
Hall of Fame" instead of the "Hall of Shame"! <g>
Speaking of which... the next inductees are due today. Keep a
lookout...
Problem is, I still have to copy the 2-dimensional parameters by hand
and enter them into the Julibrot parameter box. Perhaps a key could be
used to toggle between 2 and 3 dimensional quats?

I haven't looked at the code in question, but the term "operation"
usually refers to a mathematical operation, like addition, multiply,
etc.

Actually, they would be classified as memes. The constant formula
variations found here might also be classified as such, or perhaps
as evolving memes.

Subject: (fractint) Fractint 19.6 bug!
Paul,
>Error(7): Table overflow
There is a bug in Fractint in that this error message doesn't correctly
convey the nature of the problem at hand (this particular message was
originally supposed to alert the developers to an "impossible" situation
where the error number reported by the parser is not a valid error code).
But that is not the problem here. In this case your formula is too large to
be handled by the parser.
Fractint sets up some limitations on the size of formulas in order to
assure that the formula will fit into a fixed block of memory reserved for
a variety of purposes, and, in the case of a formula, to store the various
function pointers and variable designations necessary to run the formula.
The limits are hard coded into the program, and the amount of free memory
available while you are running Fractint is irrelevant. The limits are 2300
"operations", of which 920 may be "arguments". The expression z = x + y
involves six "operations", load x, load y, add, store to z, and clear stack
(which involves two operations). Of these, two are "arguments", namely the
two load instructions. There is also a 8192 limit on the string length of a
formula.
These limits were set up at a time when it seemed inconceivable that any
formula would exceed them, but, following some collorary of Murphy's law,
you have managed to exceed them. Congratulations. <g>
Your formula contains the following sequence of operations, which I have
annotated to show the operations and arguments:
; Ops Args
;
z2=z+2 ; 6 - 2
s=sqr(z2) ; 5 - 1
t=z2*s ; 6 - 2
ez=exp(z) ; 5 - 1
func=t*ez-c2 ; 8 - 3
der=3*s*ez+t*ez ; 12 - 5
z=z-func/der ; 8 - 3
;
; Total 50 - 17
This sequence is repeated 50 times in the formula. As a result, this
sequence alone produces 2500 operations, well over the limit.
Actually, you are not the first to hit this wall. There is a project
underway, I hope ready for the next version of Fractint, to rewrite the
parser to improve memory allocation, error warnings, and optimization.
Although the project was not initiated solely to permit larger formulas to
be run, this will be a nice side benefit when it is completed.
George Martin

This next one is interesting not because it's pretty,
but because of its startling resemblance to a classic
cantor set. The one after is prettier, but loses the
mathematical interest.

This next one is interesting not because it's pretty,
but because of its startling resemblance to a classic
cantor set. The one after is prettier, but loses the
mathematical interest.
