Pretty.
Unfortunately, at 1024x768 some glaring solid-guess errors occur, and you
might want to change to tesseral or even 1-pass.

Infinite. (In fact it has dimension 2, which you can feel is true if you
look at a deephorse or zoom about four full zooms around the point where
the usual golden ratio Siegel disk Julia is found.)
A better question: Does the boundary of the M-set have a nonvanishing
area? (Astonishingly, some plane fractal curves of dimension 2 have a
positive area, even not including dragon and Peano curves.)

Suggested usage of tesseral @ 1024 x 768 for this one in this par. Also
color cycled just a bit as can be seen by comparison:
pastel_blue2b { ; (c) Copyright David Shanholtzer, 1998
; "t" suggested by Paul Derbyshire
; color cycled a bit
reset=1960 type=phoenixcplx passes=t
center-mag=0.458265/0.312112/6.942966/1.2137 params=0.2/0/0.3/0/0
maxiter=5000 inside=255 logmap=75 decomp=256
colors=rqvZbm<38>4H`4H`4Ia<32>CmrDnsEnr<8>TgoUgoWhp<13>vvw<15>UUhVVhWXhY\

rqv<24>_cn
}
For Jay: I saw that area (or very similar - right side) but thought I would
go with what I had. Cycling the colors in the area you posted gives a bit
more than I thought it would. Maybe I'll swap color maps on that one and
see what I get...something like this (trouble is with the banding...):
pastel_blue2c { ; (c) Copyright David Shanholtzer, 1998
; nearby image
; slightly different color map
reset=1960 type=phoenixcplx
center-mag=0.491683/-0.344382/3.471483/1.2137 params=0.2/0/0.3/0/0
maxiter=5000 inside=255 logmap=75 decomp=256
colors=rqv000<42>0004H`<34>CmrDnsEnr<8>TgoUgoWhp<13>vvw<14>WWiUUhVVh<3>`\
biaci`bi<24>00U<15>rrw<15>cRTZ00<11>mfjoinpmrrqvrnv<14>m0m3Km<14>rqv000<\
18>000
}
And maybe I'll post ...2b to abpf.
davides@pipeline.com
Back up my hard drive?
How do I put it in reverse?

I have some space left on my www pages (~100 MB) so maybe we could
make a mirror of it here (Uni Tuebingen, Germany).

There is also another thing that could be done, no matter what zoom
factor one uses:
The automatic logartithmic pallette is calculated by calculating every
pixel at the border of the image. This mechanism could reuse the
previous zoom to establish the new log pallette instead of calculating
it all again. One would save several minutes without loosing quality.
The only problem would be that only the colour value is stored and not
the itterations, the log value would therefore be the lowest iteration
that would get that colour, which could be off a few iterations, but
who cares if it saves several minutes (~42 minutes on my last
deepzoom).
May the Source be with you.

One wouldn have to limit it to those aspect ratios. There could be a
flag (or modifier) that rezises the zoombox to an integer scaling and
when zooming the programm could scan all horizontal lines whether they
would fall onto one line in the original picture (within 10^-3 of a
pixel or similar value). Then it could scan all vertical lines with
the same method and copy all intersections from the original image to
the new one. Something like Boundaryguessing would immediatly accept
those points and other methods could be changed to accept them.
The time taken to copy any relevant points is irrelevant and the time
saved can be huge.

Its not strictly true, but for everyone who uses an Operating system
its true. DAUs with some "Game Playing Sytems", with a name similar to
those things in the wall, that contains glas and that you can look
through, might be using a "Wordprocessor" from the same firm to read
their emails. If an email then contains a harmfull "Macro" (as the
very same Firm calls it) it is executed (thats enabled by default) and
it can be harmfull.
Well, its offtopic and hopefully nobody here does it, but its still
intresting to know that nowadays this virus fraud email could really
be true (for DAUs).

Given p3's use as the bailout, you can enforce your default option by
adding the following to the initialization section of the formula:
IF (p3 <= 0)
p3 = (4, 0)

Good point, but who says I *want* to enforce the default? In fact,
I usually (strike that -- more like "often") override it (take a closer
look at the original post). Here's yet another example; as the name
implies, it's closely related to gj09.
gj09b { ; 1/28/98 by Mark "Bud" Christenson
reset=1930 type=formula formulafile=budz.frm formulaname=gravijul

colors=YP2qjE<18>CCs<13>ccseesefs<7>gtxhvxhxyizzgzz<6>UvvSuuSuu<14>EkfDj\
eCidChbCfaCe_<3>C_UCYSDXREVQ<4>JMLKKKKKK<26>ZXCZYB_YB`ZAa`A<8>qqCssCrqB

5>\
sCQsCSsER<12>sfE000kkk
}
Try setting the bailout to 4 for gj09. It's interesting, but 2.95
produced an image with a nice "chiseled" texture (although
I must admit I love them both, as I do all my fractal brain farts).
B-b-bud.

Subject: (fractint) NEW 4-Dimensional Hall of Shame!!
First off, I'd like to say "THANKS" to the person who posted the bogus
virus message. I didn't find out it was a hoax until I checked my
messages this morning. Of course, I had already passed on the message
to a few family members, and now I have to issue retractions and
apologies. I hereby sentence you to owing us a par a week for the rest
of your life, and I hope the other fractalers out there support me! <hg>
Now, on with the real business...
I have decided to start a 4-Dimensional Hall of Shame. Simply put,
these are quat julias or hypercomplex julias rendered with type julibrot
that don't live up to what would be expected from looking at the area of
the quat or hypercomplex that they come from.
Note that these WILL take a long time to generate if you aren't using
XFractint, especially for the recommended resolution of 1024x768. So,
for the impatient of you, I *may* put up a website on my school
account. However, the space is small, and I have to figure out how to
do it, so don't hold your breath. ;-)
Anyway, here's the first two inductees:

hyperc1 { ; our second inductee into the 4-dimensional hall

}
- --END of shame.par--
I'll try to do this every two weeks or so, at least while I'm at school.

Sorry, George. *I* just took a closer look at *your* post and see
what you mean. It's a nice option, but I'm still using v19.3 (which
does not support conditional processing) until I get a response from
the wizards re my "image shift" (1/20/98) and "color-map loading"
(1/23/98) bug posts, except when I require conditional processing.
(The latter post was a response to Paul Carlson's post on 1/19).
Thanks anyway, Bud

This is a variation on the well known "Good Times" hoax. The virus is
the warning itself, you just propagated the virus by "warning" us.

In the future, before you pass on a virus "warning" from someone else,
check a site like that one (sarc is Symantec AntiVirus Research Center,
run by Symantec, which makes Norton Anti-Virus). The virus companies
are aware of all the hoaxes long before most people have heard of

is done by passing false reports and causing people to worry about and
spend time investigating non-existent problems.

I agree, the usual answer to the question - what is the dimension of the
MSet...
is 2.
How ever the question here is a little different. It is perhaps not well
stated mathematically. The dimension of the coast of the
'contiguous' Mandelbrot set (the cardioid and attached buds, skipping the
filaments and midgets) is not dimension 2.
The algorithm used by Dr. J shows an early estimate of 6/5. However if
the calculation were to have been stopped at half as much, a different
value would have obtained. If the particular method Dr. J used were
continued, either the assumption of doubling the steps with each
contour is not needed or the estimate will slowly increase toward 2.
I'm going to modify the FotN page lest anyone get led astray :-)

Subject: (fractint) Flame fractals
Is it possible using Fractint (formula's ?) to recreate the type of
fractals by Scott Draves at the following site?
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/usr/spot/web/flame.html
I've tried without success to make sense of the source code, but maybe
someone has already trodden this path and has it sussed.
Regards
Bob

Whaaaaaat are these horrible little a`a`a`s doing on my par screen. They
don't appear in the file itself, so I can't even delete them. They are
completely preventing me from doing the herman rings, and a number of other
par files I cut and pasted the same day. Any clues please?

Yes, use type=ifs and store the IFS mappings in an IFS file. Flame
generates the IFS mappings automatically. You should be able to
convert one of its stored mappings to a fractint IFS file.

In the mean time....I'm getting so many fantastic images from Bud's

A better choice than Symantec (which has been involved in
fostering virus scares in the past) is the Computer Virus
Myths Page at
http://kumite.com/myths/
or the CIAC site at
http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/
Now the question becomes, given the amount of time some
of us spend using Fractint, instead of something more
productive, maybe we should classify Fractint as a virus?
