Well, Jay, one thing is for sure: it still does not look like a damped vibration
curve, but I would not say you messed it up!

Nice personal fractals, especially in the 2nd half of you page, but when
you show images made by others, you must give the name of their creators.

What is really needed is a way to specify formula defaults for everything
from the view area to the z params and things like "outside=real" if
necessary.
Built-in types have defaults,e.g. put in lambda, and there are nontrivial
values on the 'z' screen automagically, chosen to generate an interesting
image.

12 new images. They are available at:

These are more images using the Carr2821 formula, and remind me of nature=

"Shadows on the Trail", and "Crane Marsh". Thumbnails are jpeg, but the
1024x768 images are PNG files.

Subject: Re: (fractint) Triangle Inequality Coloring
Peter,
The triangle inequality coloring method (at least, the one I developed),
colors the fractal based on a fundamental theorem of complex numbers.
Given 2 complex numbers a and b, then
|a + b| <= |a| + |b|, and
|a + b| >= ||a| - |b||,
where || represents the magnitude, not Fractint's magnitude-squared.
Basically, since complex numbers have both magnitude and direction, the
resulting magnitude of the sum of two numbers lies somewhere between the
difference of their magnitudes and the sum of their magnitudes. For
example, if we use 3 and -5,
|3 + -5| = |-2| = 2 >= ||3| - |5|| = |3 - 5| = |-2| = 2
At one extreme, the 2 numbers are pointing different directions, so adding
them results in subtracting their magnitudes. At the other extreme,
|2i + 4i| = |6i| = 6 <= |2i| + |4i| = 2 + 4 = 6
So if both numbers are pointing in the same direction, then adding them
results in adding their magnitudes.
This can be visualized by considering a triangle in the complex plane.
Start at the origin (0,0) and draw one leg out to a. From there, draw
another leg to a+b. Then, draw the third leg from (0,0) to a+b. The two
extreme cases are cases where the triangle has zero area, since all 3
legs lie on one line.
Anyway, back to fractals. The important thing is that, if we replace a
with z^2 and b with c, then
||z^2|-|c| <= |z^2+c| <= |z^2|+|c|, or
lowerbound <= |current iteration| <= upperbound.
This can be rescaled to:
0 <= (|current iteration| - lowerbound) / (upper-lower) <= 1.
Multiply by 2pi and you have an angle that shows up nicely using
Fractint's decomp option.
Here's a formula file using the triangle method. I have also used
averaging to reduce banding.
Enjoy,
Kerry Mitchell

Most of the formulae I have made will provide default values for entries on
the z page that are left at zero; this is part of the formula, not the PAR
file that sets defaults. However, because these values are assigned when
calculation actually begins, they are not reflected on the z page, so
unless you look at the formula code, you won't see what's going on.
Providing the defaults is mostly there for folks who plug numbers in at
random; this lets them at least see something before fiddling with numbers.

Damien....
You got my idea exactly!!! Can such a feature be added to fractint??
Sometimes I have a hard time conveying what I mean because I'm not really
familiar with the technical aspects of fractint.
Another question.....I noticed in some of the pars that Jay Hill posts that
it reads
frm:formulaname {formula here}
If I paste this whole thing into my formula file (currently jan98.frm),
fractint doesn't pick up the formula. But I suspect there is a good reason
why Jay uses this methodology.....?????? am I right??? and what does it do???

Lee...
Why did you select PNG as the format rather than say, tiff or bmp??

Angela,
- You got my idea exactly!!! Can such a feature be added to fractint??
Theoretically, anything can be added to FractInt. :) The question is, will
somebody do it? There are things I want to do with the FractInt code, but
currently I am so overwhelmed with other things that I haven't had a
chance. I haven't even had time to update my own web gallery... :(
- Another question.....I noticed in some of the pars that Jay Hill posts that
- it reads
-
- frm:formulaname {formula here}
-
- If I paste this whole thing into my formula file (currently jan98.frm),
- fractint doesn't pick up the formula.
Just take out the frm: before the formula name. frm: is a prefix you put
on the formula name so that you can put a FRM inside a PAR. When you take
the FRM out of the PAR and put it back into a FRM file, you need to take
off the frm: prefix. Does this make sense?
- But I suspect there is a good reason why Jay uses this methodology.....???
Yep, so you can cut & paste the PAR and have everything in one file. With
the frm: prefix, you can put the PAR and the FRM in the same file, and it's
easier to pass around your work. Before the prefix was available, you had
to pass around a PAR *and* a FRM, and this was a little more cumbersome--it
was too easy for a PAR to get separated from its FRM, and if you don't have
the FRM, the PAR is no good.

Courtesy of Tim Wegner:
***************************************
Make a file called makepar.bat (or whatever) containing:
for %%f in (*.gif) do fractint %%f makepar=%1 batch=yes
Then type in:
makepar mypars
This will put PARS for all the GIFs in the current directory in the
file mypars.par.
***************************************
[I should add that fractint either has to be in your PATH or in the
directory that the gifs are in.]
It works fine. I used it to extract the pars from the over 1,000 gifs on
Jill Lawson's web page, though the saving in space was not huge, due to
the small size of the images she has posted.

When fractint loads a par from a par file it will read the formula if the line
starts with "frm:". It ignores such a thing in an frm file. If you want the
formula in your jan98.frm file, just cut and paste and delete the "frm:"

For a lossless format, PNG is outstanding (much better than Tiff and BMP, and
for 256 colors, GIF), and is *the* format of the near future since it is also
Public Domain (unlike GIF). For Windows 3.1/95 most graphics programs support
PNG, e.g., PhotoShop, PaintShopPro, Graphics Workshop, etc.
And note that in the next major revision of Fractint, GIF will be drop-kicked
to be replaced by ...... PNG!
If it's good enough for Tim, it's good enough for me. :^)
So it behooves everybody to get on the PNG bandwagon as soon as possible and
to get the necessary graphics software to handle PNG images. I archive all of
my ultra-hi-rez images as PNG.

Hi Fractintiers,
We could change the batch file slightly. If you want to do certain
GIFs and as I, don't want to much in your path so Fractint is not there,
try this. Make a subdir off your fractint dir. Move or copy your GIFs
to it. In DOS run this bat...
for %%f in (*.gif) do ..\fractint %%f makepar=%1 batch=yes
Alas, this does not work for me, neither does the original! I get
an error message. Even when running in the fractint dir.
C:\JAY\FRACTINT.196>makepar mypars
C:\JAY\FRACTINT.196>for f makepar=mypars batch=yes
Syntax error
So what is wrong?
Jay

Subject: (fractint) Lee's Truecol
Hi Angela (the Fractal Wiz),
>>Why did you select PNG as the format rather than say, tiff or bmp??<<
Because Fractint is headed that way! When Fractint goes truecolor, all
such images will automatically be saved as PNG. It (with 256 colors)
compresses much tighter than GIF, it is lossless, and it is freeware
(unlike GIF). The next version of Fractint will be able to read these PNG=
files, but not bmp or tiff. Until then, I use QPV (a shareware graphics
viewer) to view PNG images in DOS, and Graphics Workshop to view them in
Windows.

Thanks. That's way better than a lava lamp. Two gratuitous pars follow. I
someone cld look at them and tell me what I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate it.
