Subject: (fractdev) Out of town

I'll be out of town until Sunday. The list can continue as normal
(though "normal" lately is quiet <g!>) though I won't be able to
handle any special list administration requests until I get back.
Tim

Subject: (fractdev) Integer math
Date: 17 Oct 1997 21:17:23 -0600
We had a discussion on CompuServe about integer math, and everyone
(even Bert Tyler, the original author) voted yes. It will be done.
This will buy us a whole lot of space in the DOS version. I'll find
out how much as soon as possible.
While extending the life of the DOS version, this will also move us a
step closer to portability.
I have also raised the question of removing all fractal types that
can be implemented in parser formulas. This would further simplify.
Right now I am thinking of a truly major new release of fractint. We
never have schedules around here, but just to put ideas in peoples
head, I'm thinking of a June release target.
The new fractint version 20.0 will have no integer math, but will
have SOI, PNG, and truecolor support. It would have a new method of
storing parameters in images (probably PNG images - we might drop GIF
support altogether, or we might leave in GIF decoding but not
encoding.)
I don't anticipate a new GUI in the June time frame, but Fractint
20.0 would be written with an increase of portability and a better
architectural isolation of the underlying engine in mind.
Any comments?
Tim

You might also want to consider anti-aliasing options.

I would prefer to have GIF decoding for at least 1 or 2 more years after
PNG is implemented.

Is this along the lines of storing the PAR as a plaintext comment in
the image?

You should be able to get this with the tiling options, right?

Please explain. What tiling options are you referring to?

When you use the 'B' command to make a PAR from the current set of
configurations, it asks you if you want to tile the screen with a grid
of NxM images. If you tile your image with a 3x3 grid of images,
stitch the 9 images together in a mosaic and then downfilter, you've
just anti-aliased your fractal.

But Fractint doesn't downfilter. This discussion was what should be adde=
d
directly to Fractint itself. Once any post-processing is done, the image=
can't be zoomed, pars can't be made to construct the same image, etc. =
Since Zplot and FractalXtreme both support anti-aliasing, I was just
suggesting that Fractint also support it.

Yes, though not as a comment. I have reserved a special PNG chunk for
this purpose.
We never thought of portability when we wrote binary numbers to a
file. Ken Shirriff went to a lot of trouble to make Xfract read our
fractal data! We don't need to repeat that mistake when we go to PNG.
