Subject: (fractdev) FTP issues on julia
Date: 01 Oct 2001 09:23:36 -0600
Hey guys,
I just checked uploading files via FTP to julia.fractalus.com and it
works for me. Are you FTPing to julia or to ftp.fractint.org? (Trying
to narrow down where the issue is!)

Since I have the patch, I can update the source package if you like. Let me know.
I have FTP working - had to turn off PASV mode (I am using CuteFTP.)

Julia.fractalus.org, not ftp.fractint.org. I was doing PASV mode. When I turned that off, it worked.
I have never understood the complexities of FTP except that I know it is one of the more
problematic protocols, especially in situations like mine trying to FTP from a PC behind a
masqueraded firewall.
In any case, I seem to have it working.

Thanks, but I got them. There seems to be a problem with time-outs. I had
to keep disconnecting and reconnecting to finish getting all the files
uploaded and the old files moved.

That's really weird. There's not supposed to be any firewalling at the new
host, so both passive and active FTP should work. (Yes FTP is a
cantankerous protocol, but better protocols aren't in widespread use.)
You're not supposed to get timeouts unless the FTP server itself has
decided to time your session out.

My favorite is scp (secure copy) which has the advantage of encrypted authentication. I use it
between my various machines on my local network. For some reason I couldn't get it to work
with fractalus, but I'll try again, problem is probably on my end.
Of course FTP has much more mature clients.

And encrypted file transfer. scp is suitable for transferring any sensitive
file. It may not work on julia if you're using SSH1. I've run into this
myself, though, so it's on my list of things to check.

Hmm, I changed to ssh2 and it still didn't work. I guess I should try in from Linux, since Windows
clients are a bit weird. I can ssh in for a terminal session OK.
