Tim,

I purchased a new laptop over the weekend.  Another Sony, 15" screen, 800
MHz AMD Duron, ATI Rage Mobility video.  Rachel gets the old one for
college.

Fractint has no problems with the video or the OS.  The Mandrake 8.0
distribution loaded with no problems and looks like it's a big improvement
over 7.2.  Now I need to figure out how I got NFS to work before so I can
transfer all my Xfractint files.

I bought nearly the identical laptop for my wife Susan, though I have the use
of it also. Its a Sony Vaio F220. Similar to yours except a 14.1
inch screen. It's an 800 mhz AMD Duron.

You can transfer all the fractint files via FTP.

I now have a "computer farm" of nearly 7 computers (sounds
ridiculous) all networked. I freed up an old pentium 150 mhz by
buying my wife a used Dell 400 mhz. This one still has my original
fractint development environment. I also have a fractint environment
on  my HP. The main goal of this is learning.

What computer do you have connected to your DSL line? Occurred
to me that depending on your circumstances, we might be able to
connect our systems together with VPN (Virtual Private
Networking) or some variation.

The laptop is missing a symbolic link to the X11 library.  I'm not sure why
since all the directories are there.  Can you tell me where it needs to be
and how to make it?  My "real" Linux books are in Illinois.

The desktop installation cleverly removed the C compiler for me.  Not quite
seamless yet!

Cleaning off the Linux partition on Rachel's machine ultimately ended up in
reformatting the HD and re-installing W98.

This is one of those cases where there are several solutions.  I had looked
at FTP when I first needed to do this and decided NFS was a better approach.
I had only one machine running the NFS server and had started it when
another machine was running Windows.  For some reason that tends to confuse
things.  This morning when I tried it with only Linux running on all three
machines it worked perfectly.  Well, after I got the hosts and mount
locations set correctly (don't use /tmp).  Now I have to figure out how to
start the NFS server on my other two machines.  I think something in
initd.conf will do the trick, but my books...

It's the desktop no-name brand 233 MHz pentium.  But, the DSL line is not a
permanent connection.  However, a VPN would be pretty slick.

Heh heh. I responded to your message after my wife had checked
the mail. Pegasus mail was still set to her "sdwegner" identity. Of
course sdwegner is not a list member, twegner is. So the message

forgot to edit the subject line.

I left the bogus subject in this message for laughs.

I am installing Linux Mandrake 8.0 on the laptop as we speak.

What did you mean that the DSL connection is not permanent

I have to 'dial' in to connect.  The connect time is a lot less than for an
analog modem.  Since I have no need for an always on connection, and it was
cheaper, this made sense to me.  The DSL modem resides in a PCI slot in my
desktop machine.

Sounds like you have a pppoe connection. I wonder if you could just stay
"dialed in" all the time.

I have a dynamic IP using DHCP, but my IP seems to always be
208.191.185.105. New Soyhwestern Bell DSL accounts use pppoe, but I
guess my pre-pppoe setup (which is much better IMHO) was grandfathered
in. I leave my 486 firewall router (which hosts the twegner.dynodns.net web
page) up all the time. But even when I take it down, when it comes up the
IP is the same.

I could make some hard disk space available for project use. We don't reall
need it with fractalus, but it might be useful. For example, I could put my
versions files (which I keep threatening to put on a CD) online.

No.  When there is low demand they kick me off after two hours.  During high
demand it happens after a set time of inactivity.

That was my first thought.  OTOH, you could do that on fractalus also.
Perhaps we could implement some sort of revision control system.  Not that
we need it.

We have no special deadline, and have other resources if it's a
problem. Keep in mind that if we put the whole history of fractint
changes in it it will be relatively big. At the moment the partition we
are in has about 1 gb free. I would think that is fine depending on
what other disk space pressures that partition has. Maybe we
should contribute to a larger disk, though I imagine your time is a
whole lot more valuable than the disk <g!>

I'm looking to set up a dmz in my home network that would let me
more safely expose a machine to the web. Of course it would have
only 128 kb bandwidth (the upload speed of my DSL line).

Only if you put it in /home. I'd probably put it in /home/httpd, which has
18G free. And yeah, the entire revision history, as much as available,

Actually the disk space situation will change in the next couple of months
anyway. As soon as I recover from a new car purchase, I'm going to assemble
a new server (mandy) and set it up at a hosting facility across town. Right
now I'm looking at a 1.2GHz Athlon setup with IDE RAID and 512M RAM... that
should hold for a while, even with some of the beefier processing I'm
expecting to do. Moving servers is part of a larger plan to separate my
hosting needs from WildCard. Politics.

Of course before that happens I'll let you know, since it will directly
affect how you access files. It won't affect the general public, though. In
fact it will let me open up anonymous FTP again.

Yep. I need to do that here with my cable line, as part of the

Tim,

I ended up having to load the XFree86-devel, ncurses, and termcap packages
to get Xfractint to compile.  I guess I shouldn't chose the standard install
option.

When running at 24-bit color, the artifacts caused by solid guessing
mentioned by Tim Lavoie are very noticeable.  They didn't really show up on
my other laptop.

I've started to add the p4 and p5 parameters to the evolver.  I'll need to
create a new evolver screen just for parameters.  Or figure out how to put
two parameters on one line.

Also, it seems that you are taking them directly to the developer version
and not the release version.  Are you sure that's wise?  I would have the
obvious thing take them to the release version and make them hunt for a
developer version, if the dev. version is less stable.  That's a judgment
call I'm not in a position to make, but it made me wonder when I browsed.

I would make the download link quite obvious and not embedded within the
paragraph as you have the link now.

In general, for links embedded in text avoid having links around phrases
like "click here" or "here" or basically anything that isn't the noun
phrase describing the target of the link.  So maybe using "latest fractint
files" as the link text would be better if you leave it in the
paragraph.  Same thing with the remaining links through the section.

We used to have a symbolic link.  I haven't remembered about it for ages.
It needs to be in a location where I can't miss it when I update the files.

One minor point.  It sounds like it is possible to get the source for the
latest DOS developer's version.  We haven't been doing that, but we could.

I've added the second screen for the evolver parameters.  I still need to
clean it up a bit, add backwards compatibility, and make the appropriate
Xfractint changes.

    First the docs pointed in this URL are for the Apache 2.0 beta branch, and
as far as I can tell www.fractint.org is usring Apache/1.3.17 on Linux. But
the directive that interests us is avaliable in this version also:

    HeaderName <file>

    This will add a header to any directory listing from the file <file> :-)
and if we want it is possible to add a footer with the ReadmeName directive
(same syntax of the HeaderName).

    One point though, the Apache server needs the module mod_autoindex for this
directive to work (it will be cheerfully ignored if the module isn't there).
From the look of the responses of the server I cannot tell if the module is
compiled/linked in or not.

    If you need help dealing with Apache configuration, just tell me and I'll
try to help.

In case you hadn't noticed (you probably did), the Xfractint 20.1.12 source,
although it will compile, doesn't work.  I discovered this after putting
patch 13 in my working version and then needing to check what patch 12 did.

Yes.  It turns out that the focus changes to the blank window that gets
opened if you don't have an sstools.ini file.  I'll look into delaying the
opening of that window.

I have patch 13 ready.  It adds p4 and p5 to the evolver.  I need to get the
executables ready, so I should make them available tomorrow.

Xfractint on my computer has always started that way (focus changes to the
blank window), because I don't use an sstools.ini. I have noticed in
version 20.1.12 that the blank window takes 2 - 3 seconds to appear, as
opposed to almost instantly in previous versions, but it's no big deal
here.

I rarely use the evolver feature, so I'll wait for the xfractint source to
be posted.

This note has some details of my home networking setup. I am
hoping to augment (not replace) the fractint services available at
www.fractint.org hosted at fractalus.

Damien has redirected tim.fractint.org to my home machine.  I have
successfully reconfigured my LRP firewall box (my old 486) so that
it routes both to my internal network and to a "DMZ" that is
independent of my local network. (LRP=Linux Router Project, a
small version of linux that boots off a single floppy and runs in a
RAM disk.) This allows me to experiment with more confidence in
setting up services on the machine (or machines) in the DMZ. This
is because only ports allowed through by the firewall can get to the
DMZ machine, and if it should be compromised in some way, it
would not have access my home network.

In any case, http://tim.fractint.org is now routed through to a
machine I bought on on Ebay for $30. This is a Crystal server, a
166 mhz pentium in a small half-wide rack mount chassis. This
machine has a 2 gb hard drive. I have installed Mandrake 8.0 on it,
but at the moment the tim.fractint.org web page is running on a
RAM disk under LRP and I am not using the hard drive. I actually
could access the 2 GB drive and have a mirror of www.fractint.org
with just the LRP quite easily. But I think I'll likely run a web server
and CVS under a real Linux.

This setup will never replace fractalus because the total bandwidth
is only 128kb, my DSL line upload speed.

One of the things I could do is put my entire archive of old fractint
versions including developer versions online. This could be useful to
developers, though it would be moot if I would cut and sent the long-
threatened CD to Jonathan :-)

I think I have the CVS server set up. I had some help from a friend of mine
who admins a small UNIX/Windows network that uses CVS extensively. He has
expressed interest in working on the FractInt code, but I don't know if
he'll get to it.

I'm told you'll need to configure your local CVS clients by setting two
environment variables:

CVSROOT=:ext:[e-mail]:/home/cvsuser/repository
CVS_RSH=/usr/local/bin/ssh

Obviously replace the path in the last one to wherever your SSH binary
lives. username is whatever username you use to access julia. Right now
cvs.fractint.org is an alias for julia, but I set it up this way so that,
if need be, it can be easily pointed elsewhere without people reconfiguring
their stuff.

I haven't actually done the "cvs import" step because I don't have a full
source tree handy. I did set up a separate group for CVS access, and added
the accounts on julia for FractInt developers to it.

I've never actually used CVS so it's possible I got a step wrong here. If
you encounter problems getting this to work, let me know.

Inspired by some of the talk here, a friend and I are going to try to set
up a VPN between our home networks this weekend. Each of us has cable
access. It should be interesting.

What do you use for a firewall on your home system?

BTW I don't really have a static IP. It's just that it hasn't changed in
a year or more :-) I have DHCP grandfathered in, new accounts use
pppoe. I have an idea more than enough IPs are assigned to the
grandfathered DHCP customers such as myself.

I know that feeling all too well. I have three lists. One for things to do
"right now". One for things that must be done "soon". And the third list,
for "fun things I'd like to do", is the longest. Stuff like learn Japanese,
write a graphics app, maybe write some SF... (lol)

Linux with a 2.4 kernel. So my Windows systems aren't vulnerable to things
like the latest IIS worm:

Current uptime on my firewall is 43 days. I know I've reset the cable modem
a couple of times within that, but I've had this IP address for several
months. It too uses DHCP.

PPPOE is evil. You've got Ethernet; it should be used the way Ethernet was
intended, not running a stupid packet protocol over it. I've yet to hear
why PPPOE is good.

I tried the Windows client and havn't succeeded yet. I should
probably try a Linux client.

From my experience at work, it's not that hard (for starters) to use
cvs via the command line in a terminal. I have a lot of layers of
ignorance here, and trying to use a remote client might add too
many unknowns.

I don't expect or need any support from you on this, but if you do
have success with anyone connecting from a remote client, let me
know.

What windows client are you using?  WinCVS?  I've never had any problems
with it, but I haven't tried to use it with ssh.

Yes. I have to use ssh because that is how Damien has our
access to fractalus set up. He also uses a non-standard port with
ssh. The prblem may be having WinCVS correctly invoke my ssh
client. I have two - Putty and Teraterm.

I'll try from linux. If that works than I'll know that there's no problem
on Damien's end.

Tim,

I spent the weekend rebuilding the Linux kernel on my laptop.  Having done
this before, I was amazed when the machine locked up during the first boot
up.  Turns out the Athlon/Duron/K7 configuration option crashes the kernel
on my machine.  Bummer!  Once I straightened that out everything went
smoothly.  It even finds a Syquest Syjet 1.5 GB drive attached to a PCMCIA
SCSI card.

How is the VCS project coming along?  I downloaded WinCVS but haven't done
anything with it.

login to fractint.org and run CVS by hand.
