If it was a NYC session, might it have been Gerald Clark and His Caribbean
Serenaders? They seem to have played on a lot of the NYC calypso sessions
back around the 30s. Some of the backup bands from Trinidad sessions are
Audley Francis Washboard Orchestra, Sa Games Rhythm Boys, Clemons Smith and
His Broadway Syncopators, John Buddy Williams and His Blue Rhythm Orchestra.
Swiping this information from the booklet of "Fall Of Man: Calypsos On The

Atilla The Hun, King Radio, Lord Beginner, The Caresser, Mighty Destroyer,
The Growler, The Tiger and The Executor. Sounds like a wrestling league...

Wow, I walked into the Circle Bar last night to catch a Teaseorama
warmup party. There were all these burlesque artists lounging
around and cool tiki music coming from the back room. The band from
San Francisco consisted of a Bongo/drummer, bass and Vibes. The
band, The Fishermen (if I remember or it has slipped into
oblivion), is the same band that played at Otto and Baby Doe's
wedding. The band did a Martin Denny Tiki version of She Said She
Said by the Beatles that was fantastic. The vibes guy was intense!
It was pleasurable to hear live Tiki music. The guest singer was
from Hawaii and sounded so sublime.
Teaseorama is a huge gathering of modern burlesque groups/artists
that are putting on shows down at a couple of clubs in New Orleans.
Otto djs Friday night, and Br. Cleve Sunday night.
The dancing last night to the dj and the band was truly
unbelievable. The dj was from a surf type band called the
Pendletons and he spun a raucous mix of cool 60s
rock/soul/dance/neworleans toons that got every one to shimmy and
grind.
Easy listening in the Big Easy

You just can't get away from those 78's... I'm not looking for a good deal,
I'm looking for music I like! And LP records are quite defunct enough for me
thank you... I already have more than my share of defunct technology.
> The gist of my point is, don't resign yourself to pay more, or give
> up entirely. Just broaden your interests by experimenting a little.
I'm not depressed or despondent about this situation as much as I'm merely
noting a trend that is the result of the way the market works for any
product that is no longer produced. Paying more for a quality product (and I
don't mean solely condition) is something I have no problem with. As for
broadening interests, I find this comment somewhat amusing coming from a
person who expressed such a very rigid definition of just what constitutes
good music!
> It's a lot easier to take a risk on a 50 cent 78 than it is a thirty
> dollar "lounge" record.
I'l reiterate my comment of never having bought a lottery ticket. But
nevertheless any record I would buy in the upper price range would almost
always be electronic or experimental, and not the kind of thing you find in
the 50 cent bins!
> The market isn't the problem. Your tastes are just too close to the crowd.
I'm afraid you really don't know me or my tastes at all! In fact
having tastes too close to the crowd is just about the last thing I've ever
been accused of! Anyway I really don't have any interest in arguing
the point any further. I've simply made an observation based on my
experiences, and I don't think it is my place or yours to be telling people
what they should be
listening to or what they should be spending their money on...

That's a huge exaggeration. I don't disagree that one can choose to
channel one's taste towards those records that are still relatively easy to
find for very little money. And away from the records that are often
relatively expensive.
I did that for about five years.
But there's a price to be paid if you choose to go there. It's not as if
the moment you start buying cheap records, the world of music opens up. It
clearly closes down. There are certain things you find at thrift stores
and certain things you don't.
And that's even more true of 78's. If you have the patience to go through
piles of 78's - and the patience to play them - you will undoubtedly find
thousands of cool and obscure records. But you will find them in a fairly
narrow group of genres.
And however much you may be able to stretch your tastes in order to
accomodate the records that you find, most people can't stretch it endlessly.
Finding a box of of Russian opera 78's is not necessarily a sure ticket to
becoming a lover of Russian opera.
The other thing that should be noted while we're here is that if you find
an old 78 of Turkish music and you really want to hear more of it, the
cheapest and most efficient solution would be to buy a CD compilation of
Turkish 78's.
Unless you really like looking for them.
Another thing we have to acknowledge is that when thrift store owners start
putting high prices on records, it usually has nothing to do with whether
the record is actually popular or sought after. It has to do with their
misguided delusion that all records are worth something by virtue of being
old. So it doesn't really matter whether your taste is close to the crowd
or not.
The only good reason to limit your shopping to thrift stores is because you
love the hunt more than the find.
Like I said, I've been there. For at least five years, I tailored my
tastes to match the records I could find for cheap.
Then one day, those records led me to this tributary and I got a couple of
miles upstream before I realized that I wasn't going to find those records
at a thrift store. And it wasn't that those records were so close to the
popular taste. It was that they'd been identified as somehow "collectible".
I tried to turn around and get back to the main stream but the current was
against me.
And thus I was banished from the world of thrift stores.
"Broaden your scope" is bullshit. If you truly broaden your scope, the
thrift store will recede in the distance.

Our local Goodwill tried records at $2 each for almost 2 years. I was
probably their biggest customer, but they weren't selling many records.
They just recently reduced the price to $1, supposedly permanently.
Naturally, I'm delighted, but I don't know how long it will last. Hopefully
it really is permanent.
As for supply, my opinion over the last 10 years has not changed. Many
BILLIONS of lp's were pressed from 1948 to 1988, and there are still
billions of them out there. I live in the Northeast, where records have
been a way of life during that whole period. I can't speak for other parts
of the country, but I have good vinyl finds on a regular basis, at thrift
stores, flea markets, and in the summer, very much at yard sales. I expect
this to continue indefinitely into the future. I also expect the demand for
vinyl to decline because those of us who were raised on vinyl are getting
older. The younger crowd were raised on CD's, and whatever comes next, so
the emotional attachment to vinyl won't exist for most of them. Just my
opinion. My interest in vinyl is as strong as ever, and I expect it to
continue. And I expect that the value of the records we collect will
continue to decline over time, with a few exceptions (the really, truly
extremely rare items).
