I was asked by a fellow listee to look into a similarity between a Residents
LP (Fingerprince) and a sound from a German schlager song. A long shot
maybe, but when I made the comparison I couldn't come to any conclusion.
However, here I was putting together this week's Space Bop show and I happen
to be listening to Les Baxter's "Skins" LP (circa 1956) and immediately
thought back to that Residents LP, so I listened to it again. It may not be
a sampled Baxter but it's certainly a similar piece to "Afro-Deesia" or at
least a similar rhythm pattern in the beginning of the Residents piece, and
the similarities continue on from there. I'm kind of happy this all came up,
as the whole side 2 of Fingerprince "Six Things to a Cycle" has a very
exotic, al la Martin Denny-Les Baxter sound to it, and frankly, it was one
Rz album I hadn't ever given a lot of listening time to, as I passed it off
as just another Moleshow period recording. And I probably would never have
made the connection without these past few years of exotica inspired
listening. Lesson learned for me: Play your records more often stupid!

Yes, this album is good, although it's very coooool arrangement wise, =
don't expect the usual pound, pound, poundnig of bass in the background as =
Secret Agent Man scuba dives underneath the enemy vessel.

They're all bossa nova-ish, Mexicali with predominant horn section.

Didn't know it was rare, glad I copied my 50 cent LP onto tape!

Since I have been too tired to shop for records lately (a combination of
diet, exercise and yardwork, but hey, I am losing weight), I decided to
look at the albums that I HAVE already and I came across a couple of
interesting discoveries:

1. Alan Livingston's name shows up on ALL of the Capitol Kiddie records
advertised on the back of the "Sparky's Magic Piano" LP; Bozo, Woody
Woodpecker (to the left of Woody is...POPEYE!?) and, of course "Sparky..."
itself.  I also found out that he starred as the ringmaster in  one of the
Bozo TV shows (how many label heads have appeared on kid's
shows?).  According to one site, he created Bozo (?)

2. The inner sleeve mentions a contest, which I lost, but I was born in
1963 and the contest ended in 1962.  I blame the judges.  In any case, it
seems that Capitol issued a record of songs with no words and ran a contest
to have people write lyrics to them.   Has anyone heard this album and was
it ever issued more than once, as a sort of before and after thing?

I didnt think it was rare. I have 2 copies, why? I dont know cause sometimes
just one aint good enough. anyway I have transferred my best copy to cd-r
and it pairs with Dick Hyman Man from O.R.G.A.N if anyone is interested in a
cdr trade.

But thats not the reason ive posted here today to this grand list, the
reason is that I picked up a record at my favorite flea market that I want
to boast. Vol. III of Soothing Sounds for Baby by Raymond Scott. I had my
doubts when this was re-issued, i thought it was some DJ pulling the wool
over our eyes and putting out one of those "fake" old records to make us all
think that here was this genius dude doing electronic music for babies in
the early 60s and we never knew about it. I didnt really think this but I
had never seen an original of any of these, so I had a little doubt, until
yesterday. When quickly flipping through the crate I went right over the top
of it, it didnt even register until I was about 20 record past it. I couldnt
believe my eyes. At any rate, its in Mono. Was wondering if it was ever
released in stereo. Is the re-issue in stereo? Anyone else here have an
original? Now I have to find Vols I and II. I reflipped through the crates
just to see if I had missed the first 2 volumes, but to no avail. And I
asked the woman, whom I proudly gave my dollar to for the record, if she had
any more records thinking she might have the other 2 stashed away. She
pointed me towards her "Collectible" records which of course consisted of
thrashed Elvis records and Beatle records with no covers which she wanted
$20 each for. What is the deal with Elvis and Beatle records? I find this to
be a very funny thing that people think just because its Elvis or the
Beatles that they have to charge all this money for them. Dont they realize
that these two artists probably sold more records than nearly anyone other
artists? There are BILLIONS of Elvis and Beatles records in the world, why
do they think them so valuable and rare???

am I ranting?

anyway im glad she had kept that Soothing Sounds aside for me, and im sure
glad that Elvis didnt do any singing on it.

Hey quit it with the "I didn't know it was rare" business.  "Rare" is
supposed to mean that very few copies exist.  But effectively it has come
to mean it's been "identified" as something people want and now it's hard
to find a copy for cheap.
Most of us have probably stumbled upon a record that others here are dying
to find.  Yesterday at the record show here, I saw at least a dozen records
for a couple of bucks that I already had but which I'm sure somebody here
would be thrilled to find.
(I'm through with record shows myself.  But that's another story.)
Anyway just quit it.
And you can do me a favor and also quit talking about my appearance.
And finally, if anyone here is friendly with the journalist Christopher
Hitchens, please let me know.

I just picked this one up in Toronto (along with about 70 other records of
varying quality from the Toronto Record Show) and I couldn't agree more.
Exotica meets psych, with an early 70's groove. Stellar lp. Highlly
recommended.

Over the weekend I picked-up an LP on the Somerset label, looks like a =
re-issue.....................this must've come from the same person who =
donated all of the Rod poetry books in the book section.

Haven't listened to it.................the person I was with (poet) just =
groaned and rolled her eyes when she asked where the poetry section was =
and I pointed and said, "Right there, see all the Rod McKuen books?!?"

I've mentioned Rod a number of times.  I like his crooning records. He does
great versions of "He ain't heavy he's my brother" and "Lilac Wine".  I
like his songwriting, especially tunes like "A Single Man" and "The Lonely
Things".
I kind of like his poetry records.  But mostly I like the Earth/Sky etc
records he made with Anita Kerr.
I know that his poetry is discredited but I think a lot of it has to do
with how popular he was.  Sort of like Dave Brubeck.  "He can't be good if
he's selling that many copies to people who normally wouldn't buy poetry".
I think you could hide some of his poems in modern poetry anthologies and
no one would be the wiser.
It's certainly much much better than this Paul McCartney book of poetry
that's out there now.  I saw one poem to Linda.  Something like "She was
the yin to yang, She was the skin for my wang.  She was the sun and the
moon and the june and tune".
Anyway I like Rod and I'll defend him to the death.

Well, you can be - sort of.  It may not be as glamorous as NYC through the
eyes of Hollywood, but that's OK.

Visit New York City in the late 50's through Tony Schwartz's field
recordings of the sounds and people of New York.  It's the most wonderful
stuff.  You've seen photos of New York.  You've watched video footage.  Now
listen to New York.  It's like browsing through a stranger's old photo
album - except these are audio snapshots.

From 1945-1976, Tony Schwartz created and produced a weekly radio program of
people and sounds of New York on WNYC (AM & FM).  With Webcor wire recorder,
he taped the people and sounds around him, "documenting life in sound and
pictures".  From this hobby developed one of the world's largest and most
diverse collections of voices, both prominent and unknown, street sounds and
music, a collection that resulted in nineteen phonograph albums for Folkways
and Columbia Records.  The Library of Congress has requested that the entire
body of Tony Schwartz's material be housed in their archives.

a tale of woe, alas! today at the sally ann i came upon a copy the
soundtrack of "the biggest bundle of them all," a caper film from 1968
with music by riz ortolani. the cover was in mint condition but there
was no record inside. i thought of buying the cover anyway (raquel welch
in a bikini) but i knew i would just be taunted by not having the record
so i didn't. musically speaking, what am i missing?

I just got another stone mint MP2000 (Montparnasse) library LP by Jean
Jacques Perrey - Moog Generation (MP27). This one also features Harry Breuer
(weren't both of them responsible for The Happy Moog?) and Pat Prilly. I'll
be sticking this one on Ebay soon for another potentially massively
overpriced bidding war.


And does anybody know anything about Dimitri Tiomkin's Rhapsody of Steel
soundtrack? I've seen it for a lot of money but just won it on Ebay for very
little money. I know I probably wont like the record and I don't really know
why I bid apart from the fact that it was cheap and in mint condition.


Sometimes I feel like a scavenger.

two mouths/sets of lips gnawing on each other.  Open it up to see the "big =
picture" - oh! a rapturous couple embracing and........well........looks =
like she's attempting to remove his lower lip!!  The left-side of the =
gatefold includes poetry re-prints like Wordsworth's "She Was a Phantom of =
Delight."

Rod McKuen "In the Beginning" - this looks like a re-issue on the Sunset =
Records label.  There's an odd note that says "Electronically re-recorded =
to simulate s-t-e-r-e-o"  The track Sinner Man includes credits to Will =
Holt and Les Baxter(?).

Here's a weird one.  It's a Greek LP called Pycckaa Gananavka - Russian =
Balalaika.  I don't usually buy Greek albums but this one's cover is make =
up of shockingly vibrant day-glo colors with a "hunter orange" background =
and hand-done bubble lettering that makes it look like a hippies worst =
trip.  Smack in the center is a weird drawing of a young "groover" doing =
an impossible sort of standing split with his legs bending in opposite =
directions while strumming a rectangular shaped "guitar" - and he's =
wearing vertically striped pants.  Haven't listened yet.........

101 Strings Plus Guitars Galore Vol. 2 - Didn't know Vol. 1 was such a =
hit.  From the back cover, "...all in the groove of the pop and underground=
 scene of today.  Over 130 players sending you to *where it is*!  Got it =
for their version of House of the Rising Sun.

Sammy Kaye "Swing and Sway in Hawaii" - Took a chance on this to hear =
Kaye's original song, Diamond Head Sword Dance.  Hope it's good............=

of movie do.

A couple of throw away orchestra pieces.

A couple of easy listening pieces

A cool jazz number

A comedy track

A chase or "action" scene with music to match

A "hip or groovy" track - in this case, it's called "In The Night Club"

This Lp also has a vocal by Johnny Mathis AND Eric Burdon and the Animals!

Overall, a very enjoyable and varied score that is probably much better than
the Modesty Blaise I (wisely) passed on and way more affordable.

The Guitar Kings "Lovin' Time" - from the Time Records label, so I hope it =
"rocks."  I liked the close-up female face and the title........

Dan and Dale "Thunderball and Other Themes" - Here's what I thought to be =
a great find, but I played a few tracks and it has very *corny* arrangement=
s that put a totally new "spin" on the "spy music" genre.  Not what I was =
expecting - but now that I know, I can listen again........the cover is =
great James Bond fantasy stuff - a photo of a guy in white coat and =
bow-tie holding his silenced pistol towering over a girl on the floor in a =
red wet suit (how they managed to outline the breasts in a wet suite??) =
that barely covers her thighs.  She holds a spear gun.  A very prominent =
yellow sticker on the front cover states "This is not the original sound =
track - the 10 additional tunes are originals composed by Dan and Dale."  =
I guess they feared legal action..........

Is this the Warren Covington album?  I don't listen to his albums as much as
I used to, but I always liked his albums. It seems to me it takes a lot of
nerve to try to replace a giant like Tommy Dorsey, and maybe the effort was
ill-conceived, but the albums are still good.   Did he ever do a spy/jazz
album, like Si Zentner or Ralph Marterie, or were they all variations on the
cha-cha theme?

There is also an exotica/latin-flavored version of the same song on one of those Dynamic Percussion LP's (there were 3 i believe). I cannot remember the name of the orchestra that played them as they are only mentioned in the liners, BUTT, the liners were scribed by Nat Hentoff. This song may be of interest due to the fact that Don Tiki resurrected it on their maiden voyage with the Mark Ryden cover (a realllly PHATTT cover BTW). It was originally recorded by Jeri Sothern back in the 50's and was something of a lost item. Maybe Fluid Floyd can fill us in further.....JB/still weilding that tiki Floyd!

Did anyone hear the segment yesterday about a Mexican rock band
that plays "go-go" music for toddlers? While they jam out, they
let their audience (which range from 3 to 8 years of age) get up
on stage and dance around.

Their songs seem to be on the garagey side, including one entitled
"My Grandfather is a Go-Go Zombie". I would love to hear it... or,
at least know what the lyrics are.

There is a wonderful jazz-exotica version of "Occasional Man" on that album
Cal Tjader did with Anita O'Day.  I can't remember the name of the album
right now, but I think it is something like "Time for Two".  It has been
reissued on CD by Verve and is great stuff.  Check it out.

Martin Denny also recorded "An Occassional Man" on his "The Enchanted
Isle" album.

I listened to this.  I got the biggest kick out of the punky little
attitude of the band.  "Make up an excuse for the teacher when she
asks you why you were late for school"

One song they played was based on "Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham.

I had this a couple of years ago and after listening to it a couple of times
I thought the best thing about it was the cover. I sold it, and I don't
remember the music being particularly good at all, it was probably a bit too
stringy and traditional, not enough pop fun or twisted experimentation for
my taste.
I know the regret of no-record-in-the-sleeve thrift store finds. my
sympathies.
