Quite true.  I posted a while back a book I found at a garage sale
which was Playboy's "how to" guide for the sophisticted male or some
such name (the book is at home and I'm not).  Anyway there was a
section on music within which I hoped to find some leads to now sound
titles but the names were only classical, and for the exact reasons
Vern cites. Keep in mind Playboy didn't ever pretend to be cutting
edge or represent fringe culture. Still this book makes for
fascinating reading if for anything as a social comment on the 70's!

Glad you mentioned it...As far as I'm concerned the less 'extras' on a CD
player, the sturdier it will be. I mistakenly bought a 6 cd changer when I
got sucked into the vortex following the 9CD Stax re-issue ('63-'68). Not
only do I rarely even listen to ONE cd all the way through, I never bothered
with piling 6 in and found it nothing but a nuiscance to wait for it to turn
to the available tray. Then, 5 years later the laser alignment went out of
kilter and my CD's were either skipping or coming up as "disc player empty"
when I had one in there. After trying to return several CD's to a shop that
upon trying them found nothing wrong with them, I went out and bought a Denon
single player in 96 and have had excellent luck with it. The only add feature
I like is the ability to fast forward through several bars of a tune to get
to the meat....JB/less is more

I also have a Denon single player that I've had for about ten or eleven
years that has worked marvelously its entire life.  I often thought I was
missing out by not having the multi-disc player, but it looks as though I
chose well.  I do listen to discs all the way through, but only because of
sheer inertia rather than love for the whole recording.  (And I listen to
more vinyl than discs anyway).

the Right Tempo sounds far better, and has more tracks. but it also
suffers a bit from damaged master tapes in a couple of places.

tough choice, but i'd certainly buy that twofer for the "Marquis de
Sade" soundtrack.

I'm a fake Texan, Colleen, a proud daughter of American Fork, Utah, who's
lived lots of places and settled in Austin from Deetroit/Ann Arbor six
years ago. Came to eXotica in 97 through my pal Ross, who was also
instrumental in breaking me into the wonders of 25 cent LPs at thrifts. As
a broke grad student, had started thrifting much earlier--after Ross played
a cha-cha LP I pawed through the record bins in earnest. My first real
score was I Want to Be Happy Cha-Chas, an Enoch Light LP where Dick Hyman
does a pretty solid imitation of Perez Prado. Happy is still one of my fav
LPs.

Actually my interest in lounge and eXotica LPs predated Ross's intro. In 87
dropped by a Chicago club called Lower Lynx, in the basement of Lynx Hall.
You know this kind of place--furnished with chairs and tables rescued from
trash piles, beer only, etc. But LL was known for its DJs. That night the
guy spun Nino Rota (I'm a fanatic), Esquival, and an Enoch Light cover of
Hernando's Hideaway. I kept pestering him til he said those magic words,
"stereo test records." After that, I was lost.

Once the ever-philosophical Moritz asked if our love of 50s and 60s music
was largely nostalgic. Made me wonder, were my parents the secret swingers
of American Fork, sending strains of Xavier Cugat or Martin Denny into the
alpine night? Nah. But my mom and big brother Charlie played the standards
on the family piano. Thanks to them, I got an exhaustive education that
grounded me as I explored jazz and, later, the music we discuss here.

Exotica? That path is more intricate. I discovered Indian music as a weeny
teeny and in college dated a guy who played the vina, a South Indian
instrument similar to the lute, and the mrdungam, a tunable drum. He and I
hiked the Western Michigan countryside counting off raga rhythms. From
there my tastes expanded into World and African musics. Somewhere along
this circuitous route, I fell in love with Polynesian music and the hybrid
exotica. Probably because I started out with "the real stuff," I first
listened to exotica with ironic ears. Now I adore it with naked sincerity,
savoring the artistry, the arrangements, the meld of "exotic" percussion
and Western instruments, the melodies, and, most of all, the dreamy mood.


=46rom time to time I've posted lots to the list. Recently other things
preoccupy me. Hope to participate more soon--appreciate off-list notes from
some of you urging me to speak up. Welcome to the list, Colleen. It's a
great place to be, many fine people, and remarkably well-mannered for a mob

Don't get me started.  Too late, you already did.
My Pioneer CDRecorder is "in the shop", not because the recording side
broke but because the play side did.
It's a 3-CD changer and one day it just wouldn't open.  Actually that
wasn't the first time it wouldn't open.   But before that you could turn it
off for a couple of hours and it would open after that.  This last time was
different.
I'll get it back from the shop. It'll open but it'll still be crap.
Because it is crap.
There's other things wrong with it.  It doesn't always play CD's, even when
the recording side will play them.  The recording side is an old-fashioned
one-CD tray. It's solid.  But that changer is crap.
In the meantime I'm playing CD's on my old Pioneer single-CD player which
also had broken but after seven years of constant use.
I initially bought this one because of its unique tray design and as far as
I can tell, this design was abandoned after this model.  I've never seen
another one like it.  (The drawer comes out, it's two inches "thick" and
solid, there's a metal plate and a spindle, you lay the CD in upside down)
Anyone else have a CD player like that?
THE BEST THING about this CD player is that you put in the CD, hit play and
it starts to play.
I hate the way the other CD player makes you wait while it examines the TOC
(table of contents).  What's that all about?

I've been having a lot of trouble with technology lately.  I keep reaching
for my baseball bat but luckily I don't have one.

Out of curiosity, I once bought an album by "Al Nevins," thinking it might
be the leader of the much loved Three Suns.  I was a bit dubious, because
the cover of the album showed a man playing a trumpet--not a featured
instrument from the Fab Three--but, just in case . . .  But the album turned
out to be a dud (I think it's "Dancing with the Blues.")  Anybody know
anything about this interloper?
    By the way, recent mention of "On a Magic Carpet" got me to pull out the
album, and I concur with the high rating another list contributer gave it.
Sure "Fever and Smoke" (which I still don't have), "Ding-Dong-Dandy
Christmas,"  and "Movin' and Groovin'" are great albums, but I'm a great fan
of several of the other albums as well.  "The Happy Go-Lucky Sound," in my
humble opinion, deserves to be right up there--as far as I'm concerned, the
version of "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" is better than the one on Movin'
& Groovin', and I was surprised at how much I liked the album "Easy
Listening."  "Love in the Afternoon" and "Twighlight Time" rarely make it to
my turntable, but the version of "Blue Skies" on "Fun in the Sun" can hardly
be beat.  The lack of bidding on "Dance With" and "Having a Ball" on e-bay
suggest lack of interest in these medley-driven albums, but I get a real
kick out of them when I put them on.
The key is Al Nevins's fantastic guitar licks--perfectly weighted to the
songs, not overpowering, but impeccably performed.
    Are any of the Three Suns still alive?  I've seen Esquivel and Martin
Denny quoted as saying they're thrilled with the revival of interest in
their music--any similar word about the Nevins family?

Hey Brad, which 12 records are these? Denny had more than 12 records didnt
he? or is this just the "ghosted" ones? Which one was the last one, the one
Denny actually played on?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is an area that fascinates me- ghosted
records.

can you imagine a ghosted record today? Buying , for instance, a Tom Waits
record, and he not even be playing on it?? I dont think the buying public
would stand for it. Must have been a different world back then.........

i still love all my denny records, even the ones hes not playing on

I used to have about fifteen Three Suns records and every one of them had
at least a couple of cuts I loved.  "On a Magic Carpet" is a good one and I
particularly liked the ones with pipe organ added.
I can't remember the names of those pipe organ ones (on one, a couple rode
a firecracker) and I can't go to the shelves and pull em out.
It was just too many records.
So I made two really hot "best-of" CDR compilations.  And got rid of them.
But I kept the two best ones.  "F & S" and "M & G".  Two of the three you
mentioned.
If someone out there prefers the Three Suns when the arrangements are more
subtle or the playing less frenetic or the overall effect more quiet, then
they can choose other records (like the orchestral one with the cover
showing a woman lounging around with a pussy arranged on her lap.... so to
speak.)
But if you like the crazy stuff with over-the-top arrangements, like
"Danny's Inferno" for instance, then I think it's just indisputable that
those two records are the most consistent.
There are less boring cuts.
Less reason to get up and move the needle.
The first time I heard Danny's Inferno was on one of a CD lounge
compilation - can't remember which series, I'm sure one of you will tell me
- - and it blew my ever blowing mind.
I hate to tow the party line but I can't help it.  Those are the two best
records they made and Movin and Groovin is the better of the two.

fortunately I don't but at a dinner party the other night after being
force-fed Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Joe Williams, and some new guy (not
that there's anything WRONG with them) I decided the house needed a little
Sam Paglia, some Ursala1000 and Sergio Mendes which I just happened to bring.
I had my first encounter with that type of drawer..first, to unload the old
CD's inside takes a couple of head scratchin' minutes. OK, finally got 'em
out..Now where do these people put the beloved jewel cases while they play a
CD. None in sight...OK, place the CD's gently upside down in a neat row so as
not to be anymore disrespectful than I'd already been...Then the tortuous
loading in of the upside down CD's (at first I put them in right side to, but
no tickee, no washee) The host, wondering why I was changing the CD's he'd
loaded in the first place, showed me with all the patronizing nonchalance he
could muster, how to load properly as though his choice of a CD player was
the only choice civilized mankind could possibly make..And this guy is a
friend!...JB/on vacation, lots of time to ponder these matters

I have a Pioneer 6 cd changer that loads upside down- probably like you =
encountered JB.  I don't understand that design.  So far it hasn't acted =
up, though its at least 10 years old.  However, I noticed that I seem to *=
hear* more of the recording nuances on my car cd player (new) compared to =
that antique Pioneer.  Is this possible?  Does it have to do with the =
listening environment?  I would have thought that a home environment would =
be better than a rumbing car.

For the most part, Cachaca (Brazillian sugar cane liquor) is not that easy
to find in the U.S. I'm fortunate to live in a Brazilian neighborhood, so I
have about 10 varieties to choose from (and yes, I make a wicked
caipirinha!). The easiest brand of cachaca to find in the U.S. is called
Pitu. It has a shrimp on the label.

be forewarned - cachaca is very very strong and can rip a hole in your
stomach if you drink too much of it in one sitting. I know from experience
(ouch!)

This happened to me. I ended up getting one of the 5-disc jobbies myself,
but I ended up enjoying it, mainly for the "full random" feature; somehow
hearing tracks from all 5 discs out of sequence can make some stand out in
ways they might not in the original context, & bouncing between a different
discs can keep the short attention span satisfied for... slightly longer
periods.
Also good if you're recording to put test masters of your own stuff in with
other discs you enjoy to see if they "measure up."

        stereos) exist any longer?

        My original cd player from 1983 finally
        crapped out entirely.   On impulse, I grudgingly
        purchased one of those 5 CD carousel players.

        I loathe the damn thing.  I can barely find one
        cd I want to play all the way through.  For chrissakes,
        what the hey do I want with five ?   It a total
        nuisance.

        Other than some exorbitant supa high end models,
        do simple garden variety "one cd" home players
        exist  ?

Mahalo to whomever it was who recommended the La Mariana Sailing Club /
Hideaway Restaurant off the Sand Island Access Road in Honolulu.  I
went with my friend Sully today for a great teri chicken sandwich and
a bottle each of Heineken Dark and Newcastle Brown Ale (too early in
the day for Cheeky Chimps and the like).  Great atmosphere - it reminded
me strongly of two favorite places growing up: Hula Hut on Georgia Ave
in Silver Spring, Maryland and Blue Hawaii off of Old Georgetown in
Bethesda, Maryland.  Only those didn't have boat slips right off the
lanai.  In fact, they didn't even *have* lanais...

haha, but it is deceptively strong... providing you're in the mood for
quite a bitter drink, then the two shots of cachaca slip down far too
quickly...

I've always had them with crushed ice, not cubes... And i recommend
white sugar instead of brown sugar which recipes often use - brown sugar
makes them a bit murky looking.

I've just come back from a cocktail bar actually, and a friend had a
mango caiprinha which i;d never seen before...

putting on Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn, he must consider himself a man
of good taste and he wouldn't need a whippersnapper like you to tell him

And anyway, it's one thing to bring CD's and ask whether you can change the
music but to just go to the CD player and change the music without telling
anyone, wow!

a bit of a shock.
I like Sarah Vaughn and Billie Holiday myself.  Who doesn't?  Then again, I
can see how they could be annoying, especially when presented by a host
who's a bit too proud of his good taste.
So way to go Jimmy, you lounge warrior you.
But if you ever come over to my house, leave your friggin CD's at home!

He was not really proud, but more trying to be the cool host with the right
sensibility. I've always hated that, especially since I have the disease in
