Yikes. Stalkers. It's as sullying to be spotted on
E-Bay as it is to be seen in a massage parlor or the
porn section of the video shop. Sometimes it's
necessary, but one hopes to get out clean.

I do not know if I've ever bid on something against
anyone on this list & I think I'd try to avoid it (my
own spending limit for exotica is pretty small). The
Borly was something I despaired of finding in the
bins. It was a score of curiosity. Not a joyous one...
like the Ray Ethier single some years back.

hey, anyone know why the bulk of scott's stuff's never been reissued? i
picked up an LP in clear lake iowa this fall (just down the road from the
surf ballroom, now that i think of it) "this time with strings" (for a buck.
it does happen) that i thought was gorgeous (well, the jacket was. the vinyl
might have been if it didn't sound like somebody used it for sandpaper) -
sent a friend took a cd-r copy of it, and he cleaned it up for me rather
nicely, he claims (i'm still anxiously awaiting its arrival). i'd love to
hear anything else that's not readily available in reissued form. anything
out there, besides the obvious?

All of this depends on how much space you're willing to devote to records
and how easy it is for you to get rid of a record.  Over the past few
years, I've had a lot of fun watching myself change the criteria for what I
keep and what I get rid of.
I'm sure I've brought home at least ten times more records than I presently
own. Very few of them had NOTHING to appreciate.  And as my taste
"expanded", that became even more true.  There are very few "easy
listening" records from what we  might call the classic period of easy
listening/lounge/exotica etc that don't contain at least one cut that I
could throw onto a compilation and enjoy.  I know there are good cuts on
Roger Williams records.  Maybe it's even true of Floyd Cramer but I never
gave him a chance.
I do keep a shelf of records just for the cover but if I kept everyone that
had a neat picture or something in the liner notes or one of those cool
"hi-fi stereo" logo, then there'd be another bunch I couldn't throw out.
The other day I bought a random batch of six Playboy magazines from the
sixties and seventies.
For the articles.
Actually it was for everything.  The stereo ads.  The ads for recording
8-track machines.  The record reviews.  The winners of the 1967 Playboy
Jazz All Stars, that cartoon they have with Henry Mancini leading a band
that has Stan Getz as first tenor sax and John Coltrane as second tenor
sax.  (Or Miles Davis as the first trumpet, Al Hirt as the second, Louis
Armstrong as the third and Dizzie Gillespie  as the fourth - take that Ken
Burns!)
(And as far as the pictures go, I can't get enough of those pre-silicone
boobs)
I'm almost embarrassed how warm and fuzzy all these nostalgic feelings are.
You know what I love doing?  Looking through those Columbia Record Club ads
and figuring out which ten records I would take for free.  I even like
doing it nowadays when I see them.  But I really enjoy it with these ads
from 1967.

("hmmm.  I'll take the Petula Clark... the James Brown... don't they have
any rock records??  Okay three more... Dave Brubeck, the Supremes..  and
Jack Jones.")

The point of all this?

I can't keep everything that gives me some pleasure.  So I limit the space
and keep a random sampling.

There's what I keep and then there's everything else.  That's the B records.

This certainly wouldn't be my recommended introduction to the
Free Design!  It's definitely best arrived at after having listened to
(and fallen in love!) with all their 60s and 70s albums.

Yes, this is quite a sombre album in places but when you realise

I dig pre-silicone boobs as much as the next guy..oh... and ya the
articles!..but can anybody get me a scan of this cartoon?

I've used ebay for a couple of years now and can't see anyone not including
it as a source for collecting vinyl, although I know there are still a few
holding out  :).  I go by ebay user name: basichip.

I've run into this situation before, not with any list members, but with
couple of people that I know personally.  And the understanding is, it's up
for grabs.  May the best man win.  Nobody takes a loss it personally, we
give it our best shots, the "loser" shakes the "winner's" hand and is happy
for them.

So much depends on what it is, how bad you want it and how often it comes
around.  If the Love American Style soundtrack comes up again, I cannot
agree to NOT bid on it just because Alan has placed a bid on it, especially
when I know his bidding tendency is to keep it under $20 and I'm willing to
pay twice that.  Suppose he is not willing to pay more than $5?  Or he does
not want it that badly?  Now the person who the record means more to is not
getting it.  Which opens up another can of worms, like contacting the
person.  "Gee Alan, I really want that, do you mind if I bid?"

furthermore, there are lots of people on this list that probably use ebay
and I have no idea what their usernames are.  I just know a handful of
obvious ones.  Where do they fit in?

Sorry fellow listees, I can't go for this one.

The Umbrella Man was in the series and didn't make it onto the first LP.
The whistling song I mentioned before is Birdsong at eventide, and I don't
think it was broadcast.
It was amazing listening to this, the Umbrella man scene I remember vividly
from when the series was shown 13 or so years ago,  absolute magic.
I was quite surprised by the Al Jolson track,  approaching someone known as
a black face artist these days, you go in with a certain amount of baggage,
but it was pretty good.  For a start its a top Exotica song. an interesting
arrangement, well played by a pretty good band.  The LP seems to be culled
from wartime songs so I'll make an assumption here that its an electric
rather than accoustic recording, I think the timings about right from what I
remember of Steve and CK's posts. Al Jolson displays what seems  be some
interesting microphone technique,  most of the time singing in a fairly high
voice, theres one part where he drops his voice to a really low low pitched
growl and gets right into the mike for that proximity affect bass boost.
Its quite creepy and he only does it once. I'd never noticed it before but
it really leaps out.  Mind you its a long time since I've played it.
Its a good LP,  I can't imagine that theres many about, as it was definitely
a cash in on the surprise success of the first LP.  Magnus says he thinks
he's found one, so good luck.

But I  thought you were suggesting a "first come, first served" guideline,
that the item is off limits just because "benwaugh" saw it first, that's
what got me going.

You got it, sure, if I see a name I'm familar with, and you are bidding on
something that is high on my want list, as a courtesy, I'll contact you and
let you know what my maximum amount is.

For the record, I have never come across a situation like this with a list
member, but understand it could happen.  Also, when I can, I don't bid until
the final seconds, so you'll rarely see my name unless you check my recent
auctions.  kinda fun peeking at what people are buying :)

But once again, this can get sticky, which is why I resisted.  Suppose I
find the item in the closing hours and  I receive no reply to my email?  Or
someone is high bidder and gets outbid by another person I don't know?  Is
the agreement still in effect?  Do I now have to contact them to see if they
intend to counter bid?  And why no other input from other listees?  Surely
we are not the only ebayers - looks like they prefer to remain anonymous.

I must be complicating this, but I'm just trying to cover all the scenarios.

Anyway, I don't want to step on any toes, I get the picture about driving up
the price without first contacting a familar name and letting them know what
one's intentions are, so fair enough.

Hello there,  I found the list after buying Piero Umiliani's 'Todays Sound'
LP.  I did a search on the www and the only results i could get were from
the list.  I liked the look of it and joined in.  I've come into this more
from a lounge sort of direction, I've been DJing man and boy for nigh on 25
year now (41 now one of many on the list born in 59), and noticing i had a
number of Lounge records on which i liked, this track or that track I did a
compilation mix tape.  Of sorts.  For myself.  A few people asked for copies
of it, and then I started getting asked to play at parties.  More so than
before.  Much more.  To the point where for the last 5 years I've played
more each year than the year before, and more times last year than from 20
to 35.  The tape was called 'The Cheesemaster Tape' and somehow the name got
transferred from the tape to me.
And as you do, I started looking for new stuff, and your tastes get more,
er, rarefied.  For a leaving present for a job i was given quite a sum in
record tokens, which was when I picked up the Piero Umiliani about 3 years
ago.  I still love that LP.
Apart from that I have 1 little girl nearly 3 and another on the way,  I'm
41 as I say.  Live in the UK seaside town of Brighton.
I still haven't found a decent resource for Piero Umiliani, but I have the
Il Giaguaro article.  Did Br Cleve's interview ever get onto Luxuria? i saw
the review of his performance at the Loungefest last year. i wish i could
have gone.
Anyway after all that bragging about DJing, I've just been sacked from my 2
regular slots, and as a consequence am 300UKPounds a month worse off, which
means no new vinyl.  Which is a shame as the list has been introducing me to
loads of great modern stuff (Los Chicarrons, Arling and Cameron, P5,
Bertrand Bergalat etc etc etc). It also means I have to stay away from the
Dusty Groove website.  far, far too tempting.
I'd recommend Johans database.  Not just because he quotes me on the
Umiliani LP either.

Although I rarely if ever buy anything on ebay, my feelings about the
gentleman's (and, presumably, gentlewoman's) agreement were similar to
Ford's.  It's an auction--that's the way the game's played.  I like Magnus's
impulse, and I suppose it is courteous to have an exchange of top bids, but
a first-come, first serve system brings with it its own set of problems.
Ford waits to the last minute (even seconds) to bid, which is clearly the
way to do it if you're determined, but having been outbid in the last
seconds (not by him), I found it quite aggravating.  I don't bid on things
that others have bid on, mainly because I'm the only income in a four-person
family, and I can't (and won't) spend a lot for an album, even if I really
do want it.  But I guess I'm really not much of one for auctions.  Speaking
of which, has anyone bought anything off of the Gemm website?  I look on
there occasionally, but everything seems very pricey (although, as you can
tell, because I'm cheap, almost everything does anyway).

Yes, I have, but it was a CD by Carl Allen on delete-happy Atlantic and I
didn't pay more than the average new CD as it was only about four years
old.  The CD took forever to get to me, but since there are many vendors,
there will be many different experiences.

As for a Gentle People's agreement, I believe that as soon as I see a name
that I know, I back off.  I already have enough enemies, due to either my
shocking good locks or my insufferable vanity.

This is nice, but it is not the point. The point is, that the price is increasing for the winner by competitive bidding. I remember Otto posting about this problem some time ago and he was trying to establish some sort of "gentleman's agreement" back then; the only problem is that it is practically really hard to do. Knowing each other's ebay names may be the best we can do, so it becomes possible to contact each others before unnessecarily bidding an item higher and higher.

Well, since it looks like everybody else is doing it, I might as well do a
little intro too-I don't post a whole lot to this list, mainly because
everybody else seems to know so much more stuff than me.  I'm Christine, 38
years on the planet and I live in Reno, Nevada.  I love this place for many
reasons.  For one, the weather is great and the cheesy sleazy casino scene
never ceases to fascinate me.  Also, folks like Tom Jones, Charo, Englebert
Humperdink et al play here all the time.  And this pretty much outlines some
of my current musical interests.  I was brought up on TJB and continue to
dig them to this day.  I first discovered Martin Denny back in the '80's
when I was in art school and my friend was playing a tape of Quiet Village.
I said "what the hell are you listening to?" but within about 3 minutes, I
was loving it and had to have some and thus started my thrift store and used
record habit.  I went through the jazz to industrial to exotica progression
and now I'm really into Mexican music, for example, Juan Gabriel, Vincent
Fernandez, Sonora Sant Anera  and especially anything that utilizes organs,
like Los Angeles Negros.  Anything with organs or vibes is great, I think we
all can agree.  An obsession of mine is footage of Elvis' '70's concerts.
can't get enough and probably should seek a 12 step program.

To me, Nevada is a perfect place, never a last call, only 7" of rain a year
and a great Lounge legacy.  I have compiled many photos of the old motels
and casinos in Nevada and they are on www.lostnevada.com.  So, if you can't
afford a trip to Vegas right now, you can at least check out some of our
fine architecture.  Also, look for our Lost Motel to appear at Burning Man
2001.
