Hard to say. The song the "Beat Generation" has him both poking fun at the
Beatniks (a nasal voice is heard saying, "Put a Beat in the White House!"),
but seemingly, speaking fluently as one. Then there is "The Mummy" by Bob
McFadden and Dor (neukcM) that has him as a Beatnik again, on a record that
pokes fun at both the Beatniks and the Rock and Rollers.
Take THAT Santa...(whoops!),

Discus Records DS 7017. Discus was a division of Rod's label Stanyan.
Rod came to see Combustible Edison in LA once, but I didn't get a chance to
speak with him. I really wanted to ask him about this record.

Weird - I had someone locally here in NZ email me about this record last week.

I love these things!
In a particularly obsessive period I got 20-some radio movie spots, mostly
from '70s exploitation movies. The best one I got was from "Frogs" (Today the
pond-tomorrow the world!). I've found a few other radio ads, usually also
released as sales promos; There's a really great one out there called "C.W.
Jones' Favorites", that's Bob and Ray plugging Calso water, and I got a
really cool '60s Thom McAn promo single at a downtown Manhattan flea market
last fall. I've only found 1 or 2 radio ads in thrift stores (sorry).

Anybody else into this stuff? I have never seen them in a record store or
swap. The only place I've seen them has been on ebay, where they are
sometimes quite plentiful - and collectible. The drawback is most movie
spots are on 7 inch discs, often one side only so you end up getting about
two minutes of audio. Spots for stuff like Thunderball or The Birds can get
pretty pricey. Advertising LP's usually come in 12 inch.
Any other places anyone can suggest? Come to think about it, I have heard
that DVD's offer movie trailers, but that still leaves me with no source
(other than ebay) for commercials for stuff like Butternut bread and Chock
Full O' Nuts coffee.
And don't tell me you find this stuff in thrift stores all the time :)

If you haven't already, check out "Filmfax" or "Outre" magazine (both

I haven't bought it in a year or so but they might even have moved on to

hi all,
well, i was out poking around in cd shops today which i shouldn't of been
doing considering how much i have to take in since tokyo..i picked up some
music from a japanese animated tv show which is quite popular here called
maruko. anyways, while i was looking around to find something to go along
with this cd i notice some cds which are probably bootlegs but peaked my
interest. one is called "music for children's events" or something like
that. it appears to be a japanese bootleg(i mean bootlegged from a official
japanese release). and looks really interesting.(whether its interesting
good or interesting bad i'm not so sure). all the song titles were in
japanese so i know nothing about it. but the kids on the cover(from the 50s
or 60s i'd say) were not japanese.anyone out there have any idea what it was
i saw or seen this before? i also saw a bunch of 101 strings discs. possibly
bootlegs again. i'm not sure. music from westerns, music from academy
awards, music from films, etc. any of these i should pick up? i'll probably
check out johan's site to see what people have said in the past but any
current advice would be nice to hear too.

I wouldn't pick up any of those three. Or let me put it another way. I
might pick up any of them but I wouldn't have high hopes for them.
You hear a lot about how good some 101 Strings records are. Some. But
they must have made about a thousand.
The good ones are not what you'd expect from a conglomeration called "101
Strings" but the vast majority sound exactly like you'd expect.
I can recommend "Dynamic Percussion" and "Hits of Today" and "Sounds of
Love" and "Exotic Sounds of Love" (though I've never actually heard or seen
it) and the Beatles one is pretty good too. And there might be one called
"Sounds of Today" as well as Hits. Or maybe it's just Sounds and not Hits.
I'd say the best way to buy their records is only buy the ones with tunes
you like or only buy the ones with weird sounding titles containing words
like "karma" and "sitar" and "guru".

Yeah, they really have a wild and varied output. As Alan stated in a more =
"polite" way - most of the 101 Strings stuff is crap. =20
One I can carry a torch for just because two of the songs are simply =
dripping with exotica sounds with female wordless vocals, etc. is the LP =
called "Fire and Romance of South America." The tunes "Inca Theme" and =
"Enchantment of the Caribbean" sound like they were torn outta another =
album and thrown in with the other mediocre titles filling up this LP. =
Anyone else hear these?.......ring members will get a chance to.
I also liked the "Night in the Tropics" album - that has more "alive" =
arrangements on it.
"Strings After Dark" has some *really* "jumping" tunes on it too.

There's a 101 strings Cd called "Plus, Plus, Plus" which includes "Karma
Sitar", "Blues For The Guru" and "Strings for Ravi" amongst a few other
goodies.
BTW I picked a good vinyl copy of "Exotic Sounds of Love" recently and can

Add these to the list:
"101 Strings Plus Guitars Galore" (Volumes 1 & 2)
"101 Strings Play Music Composed by Jim Webb and Burt Bacharach" Contains
a great long version of "Mac Arthur Park" (this of course by Webb) and an
equally fabulous version of "House of the Rising Sun" (this one by neither
Webb nor Bacharach - talk about filler).
Also I have seen a cover of "101 Strings Swing With Hammond Organ".
but haven't heard it.
A good rule of thumb with these guys is, if the tunes are swinging sixties
stuff, it's probably a good record.

Santa Monica/San Jose'? That's quite a jump, but:
San Jose has "Big Al's Record Barn", which was a bit overpriced for their
LP's, but I had a natch'l ball with the singles, $2.50 for unmarked
ones. The night fellow didn't know much, so I made out well, but the day
fellow kept incrementing the prices when he found out that I knew what I
wanted. Plus, he talked with his mouth full of peanuts. I did find a Jack
LaLanne exercise record for cheap there.
Collector's Records, had me scoring "New Sides" by Shelley Berman. On the
West Coast, Berman by the metric ton, Southeast, not so much.
For Santa Monica, I would head to Bagatelle Records in Long Beach. Exotica
at good prices:
Eloise Trio - Six dollars
Soundproof -Ferrante and Teicher, Six Dollars
Ted Auletta's Exotica, now with unbelievable warp!, 99 cents.
Plus they have a turntable.
The Record Collector in Hollywood, I think, is SUCH a boob that another
store knew where I had been when I described his attitude. They actually
wanted to know WHY I wouldn't spend twenty bucks for a record I had asked
for. ("That's a hamburger and a soda!"). If I could break wind on command,
I would have in that store.

Subject: (exotica) Swedish "Holerin"
on the radio i heard fragments of Swedish "Holerin" (long distance
shouting/calling/singing), called [kuning] or [skoning] or something
soundalike.
no artist given, no playlist, no-one at the radiostation who wants to
tell me what/who i heard, so, does anyone of you (Citizen K?) have
any idea if there's a CD out there with this Swedish kind of holerin?

Subject: (exotica) More "Jazz"
I've been defending the series as a kind of "enjoy it for what it is" thing,
mainly coming from a perspective that well, this is TV... & how can anyone
be deeply & fundamentally peeved that the "quality" of a TV version of the
history of Jazz is somehow lame?
I couldn't imagine that a documentary like this would have anyone but Wynton
as primary consultant, nor could I imagine that he'd somehow manage to be
not as annoying as he generally is. Of course the stock footage annoys, the
"America's Music" & "Black Music" refrain crosses the line from passionate
reminder to jingoistic hoo-ha etc, but on the other hand I'd NEVER seen
footage of Art Tatum playing. Ditto the Benny Goodman quartet with Lionel
Hampton & Gene Krupa banging at each other. Now I have to seek them out.
Anyways, last night's episode got me. I came home a little late,
turned it on in hopes I didn't miss too much Parker / Gillespie / Roach /
etc footage, & was treated to what seemed like a solid 10-15 minutes wasted
on "why heroin is bad." Annoying as it was to see all this time wasted, what
R-E-A-L-L-Y got me was Wynton's smug intimations that the solitude of the
junkie lifestyle was responsible for the lack of practice & discipline that
underscored Parker's long flights of improvisation, i.e. "no need to
practice boys, we'll just wing it." This was contrasted with John Lewis &
the MJQ's "restoral of the dignity of the American negro" (I'm paraphrasing
here) by bringing jazz out of those seedy dives and into the concert halls.
Parker's epitath, as far as Mr. Burns seemed to feel, was "a promise
unfulfilled."
I'm sorry, maybe it's an existential thing, but an artist lives &
dies, and their work is their legacy; you can speculate all you want, but it
doesn't change what exists & genius, such as it is, should be celebrated.
I'm willing to buy into the notion that heroin got in the way of Parker's
wish to break through to another level in his writing & playing, but if you
see bebop's harmonic & rhythmic improvisational open-endedness as a crucial
element for further & subsequent explorations of high-level improvisation,
these insinuations that the premise for all of this was self-centered,
loveless junkie behavior is not only offensive, but absurd. (I'm imagining
Archie Shepp to Cecil Taylor: "Cecil, looks like we got this all wrong, man.
This is junkie shit, flawed premises & such... I just didn't know. How bout
a few choruses of Sophisticated Lady before it's too late?" "Sounds right
Archie, but better keep it down to 4 choruses; after that 'it's just
practice,' as I heard Bird quoted on the TV the other night").
I'm not even going to get into the armchair psychoanalysis of Miles
Davis' "personal demons" by... the annoying woman whose name escapes me at
the moment.

Well I'm glad it finally got to you.
I've been enjoying it lately myself, especially the last couple of
episodes. It's nice to hear what I call "jazz" in the background instead
of the earlier jazz.
I like seeing Charlie Parker and Miles Davis and other musicians I like,
even when the narrator is spreading a bunch of shit around. I love hearing
all that Parker. I liked the way Branford Marsalis imitated Parker's
playing on his "With Strings" record which I was just listening to the
other day.
I like that other critics like Nat Hentoff are getting in there. I liked
hearing Nat Hentoff putting down the critics who didn't "get" Thelonious
Monk. I loved the way that woman described Monk's playing, the way he
always looks like he's about to hit the wrong note.
But you're right. It's just sickening the way they keep engaging in "moral
commentary", the way they keep pushing their agenda. It's classic
propaganda. They suck you in and keep you happy with all the beautiful
music and imagery while they send out the message :"Jazz equals classical
music. Ellington equals Beethoven. Stay away from bad negroes making
crazy music".
It was a small thing but I couldn't figure out why they said that Louis
Jordan had success with his "novelty" songs. They show him playing
"Caledonia", a classic rhythm n blues tune and they call it "novelty"?????
And all the while they're going out of their way to show you how Louis
Armstrong was NOT the "Uncle Tom" the young brothers thought he was.
Well I don't think he was an Uncle Tom - though I understand the accusation
- - but it's kind of strange to be defending Armstrong while you're
essentially accusing Louis Jordan of shucking and jiving.
(And yes I know that the term "novelty song" was used on early blues or
country records but the audience who heard that term last night doesn't
know that.)
What made me laugh last night was that long list of musicians who got into
junk. They say their name and then show their picture and I'm thinking of
Art Pepper up in heaven going "That's the only mention I get in this damn
documentary???"
And it's funny that Nat Hentoff puts down critics for putting down Monk,
given that I know there's going to be people in the last couple of episodes
who put down all kinds of stuff.
Anyway, sorry for continuing this but...

I'm probably aiming my foot right at my mouth for saying this since I missed said episode....but I would have LOVED to have Miles' reaction to said "psychoanalysis" had he been alive!!! (though I get the feeling that, if was still alive, that segment would have somehow made it onto the cutting room floor....)

If that's so, then I gotta wonder what kind of drugs Sun Ra was on and where I can get some...

I just read the Sun Ra bio and not only was he not a druggie, he had an
incredible work ethic. The only thing more amazing than the hours he put
into his music is the way that he was able to get his bands to rehearse as
much as they did, for little or no money. I saw Sun Ra perform several times
and after reading this book I wished I could go back and really appreciate
him.

2 Americans among Polar winners
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - Two composers and a synthesizer pioneer are this
year's winners of the prestigious Polar Music Prize, worth $115,000 each.
American composer Burt Bacharach, German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and
American electronic music innovator Robert Moog will receive the prize from
King Carl XVI Gustaf on May 14. The prize was endowed by Stikkan Anderson,
whose record company released the songs of the '70s Swedish supergroup ABBA.
Anderson died in 1998. Although it is usually awarded annually to one
popular and one classical musician, three winners were named this year. The
Royal Swedish Academy of Music cited Bacharach, 71, as one of the primary
architects of contemporary music.
Moog, 66, who helped make electronically generated sounds part of the music
mainstream, was named for his design of the Minimoog, the first compact,
easy-to-use synthesizer. The invention "paved the way to the realm of
electronic sounds that has revolutionized all genres of music during the
past half-century," the Academy said Monday. The 72-year-old Stockhausen,
who was born near Cologne, Germany, was recognized for a career that "has
been characterized by impeccable integrity and never-ceasing creativity,"
according to the citation.
