The original German version of this went
"Superkalifragilistischexpialigetisch". So what kind of version did you pick
up there? Amazing how one memorizes a word like this after 35 years, when I
seem to forget words like "Carl" today in an instant. (What was this guy's
name again I met last night at the bar?) Although this word seemed longer to
me when I was a child... superkalifragilistischexpialigetisch...

Of most interest to the Exotica list is his album of Mickey Katz songs.  Byron was involved in klezmer long before the recent mini-revival (playing in the Klezmer Conservatory Band and got a lot of flack for being black and playing that music.  Seems like a strange response to me but then I lead a sheltered life.  "Nu Blaxploitation" had a cool concept but apart from interesting moments really doesn't hold together.  "Tuskegee Experiments" is a wonderful updating of Third Stream; "Music for Six Musicians" is a tad more jazz-oriented and I like it even better.  The live album "No-Vibe Zone" is more extended jazz improv and quite good.  I haven't heard his two newest ones but Byron does nice contributions to numerous other albums, including several from Uri Caine and Bobby Previte not to mention a ton of Downtowners from Arto Lindsay to Marc Ribot.

LONDON (Reuters) - Original "glam rocker" David Bowie has been
crowned the musician's musician.

Bowie beat the Beatles and alternative rockers Radiohead in a
survey that asked hundreds of top rock and pop stars to name their
biggest musical influence.

The year-long "Under the Influence" survey, conducted by British
weekly New Musical Express, put 52-year-old Bowie ahead of an
eclectic mix of groundbreaking rap, jazz, techno and rock artists.

Bowie, who stretched rock music's boundaries in the 1970s with
his hits "Space Oddity," "Changes" and "Suffragette City," has seen
his songs performed by many groups, including Nirvana and Oasis.

Among the musicians who voted -- several of them stars in their
own right -- were British groups Radiohead and Suede, Irish rockers
U2 and U.S. artist Marilyn Manson.

"Today there seems to be a lack of icons and rock stars in
general," said Manson. "When I grew up, there was David Bowie and
Iggy Pop -- people who had something to say and had quite an impact
on music and society," he said.

Radiohead came second in the poll, while the Beatles -- still
riding high around the world with their singles collection "1" --
were named the third most influential.

U2 lead singer Bono voted for Radiohead, a group who were called
"The Pink Floyd of the 1990s."

"I saw the new Radiohead show and it was beautiful, so beautiful,
perfect sound, beautiful songs. ... They've made some extraordinary
music and they can do what they like," he said.

The rest of the top 10 are: rap group Public Enemy, jazz great
Miles Davis, German techo group Kraftwerk, punk pioneers the Sex
Pistols, controversial rapper Eminem (news - web sites),
singer-songwriter Nick Drake and moody alternative band The Smiths.

Other big names on the list were Bob Dylan at number 16, Beck at
19 and Stevie Wonder, who was voted 11th most influential.

"I was brought up with a lot of Stevie Wonder," said Spice Girl
Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham. "I think he's brilliant. I've always
listened to him and I always will."

The full list of the 20 most influential artists will be
published by the NME Tuesday.

Bowie beat Radiohead?? Say it isn't so!  Not to take from Bowie, but let's
face it, he was a third generation bluesman to BEGIN with, and from England
at that!  And then he morphed into something that has VERY LITTLE bearing on
the history of music as a whole..that of Glam Rock. But let's ask further who
are these "hundreds" of top rock and pop stars who were polled? If they were
any of the phony "Party Animal" "rockers" who feel obliged to act like
fucking assholes when they're on MTV, then their opinion isn't worth shit to

"Tommy Graham just got out of California State Penitentiary.  As I write
this, Johnny Steffen is still in.. ONE OUT, ONE IN!  I want to establish
that before you get into this album.
Why these two young men were sentenced is not important to this record.
What's done is done, you can't change that.... But tomorrow can be the
first day of the your New Life.  I think the first day of Tommy Graham's
New Life really began the day he entered CMF, for it was there he was to
meet Johnny Steffen; two dudes who had diced life's rough account and blew it!
Daily, behind locked bars, they plotted and planned a new way to travel the
trauma-ridden road of life's psychoPATH.  They were aided and abetted in
this ambitious scheme by an old traveler who had tripped on the turbulence
himself... Spade Cooley!  Before Spade made his final free-fall that
fateful day in Oakland, he had spent many a lonely night talking with Tommy
and Johnny, listening to their ideas, their songs, their voices and their
dreams. It was rewarding for Spade and an inspiration for the guys.  It was
after several of these meetings that Graham and Steffen laid their master
plan.  Their basic rap is: LIFE is your greatest gift... don't let the Time
Thieves steal it from you".

Thanks to those that offered suggestions.  I'll post a summary with my
observations in case it may be of help to anyone else:

I added these to advice TB had already given me a few months ago. Some of
the bad disks were probably made previous to my making those original
changes.  I remember uninstalling and reinstalling the software and at that
time checked for updates.  What I did today was a direct copy at 2x instead
of 4x, checked off disc-at-once (to eliminate the added 2 second gaps - I
assume the original mastering already is set up with appropriate gaps?) and
invoked the copy to hard disk first option which is slower.  I think the CD
copied fine though one or two tracks end and count down 2 seconds of
nothing. My guess is the gap on the original may not have been adequate for
these tracks so the program attempts to compensate.  At least none of the
other annoying problems seem to be there. I think this method removes the
potential problems with buffer and CD drive speed compatibility.  It seems
CD burning remains a very imprecise science. Thanks for the tips!

I think if what you're looking for is good, classic exotica records then
neither Mainstream or Limelight (both are similar labels) would be good
choices. You'd
be much better off with Liberty or RCA. But if what you're looking for are
offbeat records and in some cases records that were offbeat even by the
standards of their own day, you can't do much better than these two labels!
In fact they are very highly prized by collectors and I'd have more of them
if they were easier to find and less expensive when they did show up. Not
that everything is good, but they are overall more consistent than many
labels of that particular era. One other  consistently good sub-label is
the Command  "Electronic Pop Music" series, which featured the likes of
Richard Hayman and Perrey & Kingsley.  While I wouldn't place that Bobby
Shad record as genius but it had suitable novelty value to grab me.

I've used EZ CD Creator for a couple of years now.  Hardly an expert, I
won't be able to troubleshoot your exact problem.

But, if you are looking to make a copy of a CD, I would highly suggest
creating a DISK IMAGE first and storing it on your hard drive and then burn
your CD-R from that disk image.  Have you tried that?  You'll need some room
on your hard drive to do this.

What is a Disc Image?
A disc image is also known as an image, ISO image, CD-ROM image, or image
file. It is a single large file that is a representation of the whole set of
data and programs as it will appear on a CD. A disc image refers to both
content and logical format.

Oh, and always use the DAO (disk-at-once) setting rather than TAO
(track-at-once).  These options can be found under the advanced tab of the
CD Creation Setup window.

creating an image is one thing but ripping to wav files and then burning is
another.

i do it many different ways.  the most successful (but not only successful)
method i have found is to rip the tracks from a music CD to wav files.  there
are many freeware programs that do this.  audio catalyst is one.

then you drag those wavs to the cd creator window and burn away.  i have
never found the test function to do anything.

i read once that wav files were made especially for computer sound generation
and they are the most "friendly" to burn from.  it seems to work for me.

btw, the ripping to wav and then buring is the fastest way also.  the whole
image thing is very cumbersome and lots of problems happen there.

Supposedly there have never been soundtrack albums for either film.  Is it possible that this was made directly from the film?  "Days of Being Wild" is mostly Xavier Cugat but I've forgotten about "As Tears Go By."

That's a coincidence. I just rented that last week and was thinking of
posting about it.  Lots of mambo and cha cha.  All sounded kinda familiar
and yet kinda generic.  Probably came from old Tito Puente records but it
could have been almost anyone from that period.  (Gee I'm helpful aren't I?)
Then there's this dream the main character keeps having and that's scored
with old Hawaiian music.  I actually wouldn't mind knowing who did that.
But I didn't care enough to wait and look on the soundtrack.  Then again,
maybe the credits wouldn't have had subtitles.
It's a strange film.  (That's helpful too!)
I might rent it again.  I can't remember how it ends.  If I do rent it
again, I'll try to read the credits.

After hearing this CD on Space Bob I bought me a copy and it's
absolutely fantastic. The booklet holds an imaginary film poster for
each song, done by such capacities as Joost Swaart and others. the music
- - well... it's not surprising, all within the range of sophisticated
lounge pop, but extremely well done. Not many people seem to know A&C,
which is hard to believe. Who are they anyway? Dutch, I suppose.

Anybody familiar with this Exotica album of 1960? I've seen the cover
every once in a while, I think it's also in one of the Incredible
Strange Music books. Now, this album is reissued on vinyl and on CD,
apparently for 5 years now, but I got my copy just today. It's an
absolutely fantastic amazing Exotica highlight! It's Top Ten Exotica, if
you ask me. I heard there's a story going along with this guy, but I
can't remember having read it anywhere. On the cover he looks like
Jesus.
