I, too, scored a coolsville cha-cha rekkid a week ago:
DELLA REESE CHA-CHA-CHA...where she sounds
frighteningly like a cross between Johnny Mathis and
Eartha Kitt.  The instrumentation is like that on the
Peggy Lee Latin albums!  Very sweet...I wonder if
TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL fans know if her drag-queen like

I remember writing about this one some time ago thinking exactly the same
thing and asking exactly the same question. After the elaborate and
expertly crafted hoax that was Soul Ecstasy, I had to figure it was
possible.  Anyway, several list members then confirmed that it was a hoax.
I'm still waiting for my favourite local store to get its act together and
get me a copy as I know the local distributor has had it in stock for
months now!

Very interesting... Speaking of Cuban-Japanese connections is this stuff
true renditions of songs by the above artists or is it modified (as in
breakbeat)?  I ask because these two CDs I picked up in Paris at the Bimbo
Tower store by the Japanese group "Take Roderiguez and his Exotic Arkestra"
are very much that, broken up - remixed breakbeats featuring latin rhythms
(and Prado samples) but with a VERY Japanese interpretation and intensity.
Sound nutty well I haven't heard anything so off the wall and at the same
time so addictively good until the recent Senor Coconut/Los Samplers.  I've
never seen any of these CDS or anything else on this label "Sonic Plate" in
any store or catalogue since. The group features a guy named "Woodman" and
the label seems to be the home of a better known group I also don't know
much called "Dub Sonic" These CDs were so good I've since put Japan on my
list of "must visit" places!  Of course its a lot close to the Bimbo Tower
store in Paris, but someday...

Oh, lucky!  In a paper auction recently I got a bunch of
Della Reese albums to see if any of those match her debut
RCA album, but I missed bidding high enough for the Cha Cha
LP.  One of the RCA compilation boxes had a cut from the Cha
Cha album which I love and wondered if the rest were as good.
Sounds like they are by your account.

Della was skinnier back then (but then
again, weren't we all?!).

Oh, Jane, it is interesting...I don't even remember your
"previous" name.  Is this a good thing?

SEATTLE (AP) - Jacques Wellington Rupp, a former Walt Disney Studios designer
who won acclaim for ``Lady and the Tramp,'' then became an award-winning
Seattle Times staff artist, died of cancer Tuesday. He was 79.

Rupp landed a job with Disney in the early 1950s by pitching some promotional
ideas for ``The Wonderful World of Disney.'' His subsequent opening and closing
titles for the television show featured a darting Tinker Bell.

Rupp designed the original logo for Disneyland, the park's commuter bus and
costumes for workers on the Jungle Cruise and Canal Boat rides and
Frontierland.

For Disney's film ``Lady and the Tramp,'' released in 1955 after three years in
production, Rupp designed the settings in which characters appeared and
indicated what action was to occur in each. The work earned him membership in
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Rupp went on to bit parts in several Disney TV productions and graphics work
for other Hollywood animation studios. He was associated with animated versions
of ``Batman'' and ``Superman'' and drew for the ``Magoo'' cartoons.

Returning to Seattle in 1969 to do graphics for the University of Washington
School of Medicine, Rupp began free-lancing covers for the Times' Sunday
magazine and became a full-time staff artist in 1972.

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (AP) -- Film editor Robert E. Swink, nominated for
Oscars for "Roman Holiday,'' "Funny Girl'' and "The Boys From Brazil,''  died
Aug. 15.  He was 82.

Swink joined the editorial department of RKO Radio Studios in 1936 and within
five years worked his way into film editing.   During World War II he worked on
training films in the Army Signal Corps.

In addition to his Academy Award nominations, Swink earned a career achievement
award in 1993 from the American Cinema Editors.

Other films edited by Swink, who retired in 1989, included "Papillon'' with
Dustin Hoffman and "Rooster Cogburn'' with John Wayne.

Does this Mr Kiely chap not know who the marvellous, debonair Mr Hannon is?
I spose some of you on this list must do, but i shall expound none the less.
Well, Mr Hannon is a chap who 'is' the Divine Comedy, an outfit, in my
opinion, far more like Scott Walker than anything Almond (can that really be
his last name?!) has ever done. Hannon's music is all enormous orchestras,
grand arrangements and impassioned vocals, and his music is rather quirky.
(he uses music students to play on his albums)
'Fin de Siecle', his recent album, had a song about the National Express (UK
version of the US Greyhound, and just as crap), with witty lyrics about the
people on the coach, 'from the feeble old dear to the screaming child'. then
in Generation Sex the lines 'lovers watch their backs while hacks in macs
take snaps through telephoto lenses chase Mercedes Benzs through the night'.
Er... he also wears a cummerbund and drinks champagne from the bottle...
And his third album 'Casanova' (with a song about Holly Golightly on it) was
presented to Scott Walker on a bed of red roses.
Which is rather cool...

They are!  Sometimes singers unsuspected Latin
abilities can surprise you!  I still haven't found a
"blue eyed bossa" record I like more than Eydie
Gorme's BLAME IT ON THE BOSSA NOVA.

Christopher is a librarian at the Chelmsford public library and one of his responsibilities is purchasing the music for the library. And what a wonderful selection it is.

around, unless they're in deep lurk. Or changed their names. Lazlo is still

Ahh I sent him the link to the pixie...He sent out all those bumber stickers and I wanted to show him that I support him. It seems hard work putting together that magazine. Its doing well (I think) and good for him!

I've sent him a few LP's he put in the mag...Dana sent me a few things...I taped an interview over the phone with him once and played it on the air. I would do this for every issue but I can't get a decent recording over the phone.

It's all a lot of fun being involved in this nice community and this list. Doing what I can. I'll have to remember to mention the magazine on the show tomorrow. Maybe Chris will get a subscription for his library?

The mag might be in the mail tomorrow. I hope he mentioned the show!

Most humble apologies! Stuff buried in the back, I catch. The danged cover
story goes over my head. Habits formed by too much digging in the bins in
the back of the store, I guess.

Hi, boys and girls,

back from a 10 days tour stuffed with Tiki events, release parties and
art happenings (of which I will maybe report in further mails). But
first things first:

The time has come, the waiting has an end, your prayers were heard, your
wildest dreams will come true, the book of the books is out, and it's
great. 10 years of extensive research by Prof. Dr. Sven A. "Tiki"
Kirsten with the help of numerous others resulted in the final definite
standard work about Tiki culture. Covered in a pool-proof plastic
"pillow-cover" an unsurveyable multitude of the greatest photos spread
out on 254 amazing pages in 100% full color. "The Book of Tiki" is
released at a point in history of popular culture when the Tiki craze is
just about to leave the inner circle of the original enthusiasts and to
become a major trend for many. It will surely kick off an avalanche. But
it's not only the flood of pictures: like noone else Sven Kirsten has
managed to tell the story of Tiki with minute detail obsession and a
whimsical humor that makes the book a reading experience of the rare and
pleasing kind.

As a friend who has watched Sven working on this book over the years,
and especially seeing how long he has been trying in vain to find a
publisher I am double happy for him that it finally happened. I think
the time for the release could not have been chosen more propitious
though.

When Ina, the PR-girl of Taschen, the publisher, arrived with the first
200 copies fresh from the printing plant, I was in the middle of a Tiki
sculpture workshop in a little Thuringian village, called Auerstedt.
First my co-artists would not tell me about it, because they knew, that
I would drop my saw and leaving my Ytong-Tikis immediately as soon as I
learned about the arrival. But not for long. When I heard the news I
forgot everything around me and hypnotized I leafed through the pages
for hours. The book is so big and full of pictures you hardly manage to
go all the way through it in one turn. After two thirds I had to take a
break and breathe in before continuing.

Everybody loved the book and on the official release next day Dominic
Taschen and his wife showed up personally. We placed the book on the
front window of a red convertible Trabant that we used as the coach of
our Tiki princess for an event at the annual Wine-parade of Bad Sulza,
Thuringia. We formed a block of our own amongst all the wine dealers and
folk-people, announced as "Tiki - the dukes of the South Seas", all
wearing flower leis, Hawaii shirts and the girls in Hula skirts. I had
prepared big cardboard Tiki signs that we carried to the sounds of
surf-music through the streets of  the tiny village much to the
disbelief of the rural population. Even Ina joined us and I guess this
must have been the most unusual promo-event she has done in her life.

I hope the book will make an impression as good as it did here on the
Kahiki closing party this weekend. I heard Sven will manage to make it
there, although he's in the middle of a film job. He will celebrate into
his 45th birthday, so I hope it will be the most exciting he has ever
had! Congratulations!

commercialism.   I really have enjoyed the Tiki culture the way it

Was talking to someone about Japanese "cartoons" and he made some =
recordings of the various theme songs etc. to stuff like "Cowboy Beebop."

Is anyone aware of any music CD's compiling this type of music - some of =
it's not bad at all.  The "Beebop" stuff is like frenetic big band =
stuff............

       The only Tiki bar listed on the national registry of historic places
is
       about to close its doors, and that's causing an uproar in Columbus,
       Ohio. The Kahiki Supper Club is being torn down to make way for a
       Walgreen's. And where to go now in Columbus when you get a yen for
       Samoan flaming chicken or a rum drink erupting with dry ice, not to
       mention girls in hula skirts. Owner Michael Tsao insists he hopes to
       reopen the Kahiki as part of the city's redeveloped waterfront.
Still,
       Kahiki's fans are lining up to get one last taste of the tropics.

       Mr. MICHAEL TSAO (Owner, Kahiki Supper Club): We are ready to close
the
       restaurant as of this Saturday. And there is a huge luau going on
this
       Saturday. But in the meantime we're getting so much press, we have
been
       doing so much business, but we don't even know why we're closing
       anymore. So...

       MONTAGNE: Well, that actually is my question. Why, in fact, are you
       closing Kahiki down? One of the big concerns, as I understand it is
this
       Kahiki has all this wonderful architecture from when it was built
       back--What?--1960 now, right?

       Mr. TSAO: It was built in 1961.

       MONTAGNE: Is that all going?

       Mr. TSAO: No. Nothing is going. You have to understand to start with,
       you have to go back into the '40s and the '50s. During that time, our
       military boys have R&R and going into the islands, and experience a
       phenomenon, which is drinks, relaxation, naked womans. When they come
       back to the mainland, they started restaurants and copied that
       phenomenon. And that's how actually Polynesian restaurant is the
       granddaddy of the theme restaurant. At this point, we look at--the
Tiki
       culture have to be preserved. What we intend to do is take the
current
       Kahiki and reproduce it as the shape of the building, like a canoe,
and
       then taking the interior, rebuild it using the same decorating
package,
       in fact, the same floor plan.

       MONTAGNE: There's all this controversy. Is that because the fear is
that
       that won't happen?

       Mr. TSAO: Yes, it is true today that we don't have a signed document
       saying that we are going to down to the waterfront. However, it is
the
       understanding of the Kahiki and the city that we're both working very
       hard to achieve that goal. So we believe that it can be achieved.

       MONTAGNE: Well, what's the coolest thing at the Kahiki? The most sort
of
       amazing site one would see walking in the Kahiki?

       Mr. TSAO: When you walk into the Kahiki, at first you see this two
huge
       Tiki about 20-foot high guarding the front door. And then you go into
       the foyer, you see water fountain all over the place. As you enter
into
       different rooms, on the side you'll see one area is all fish tanks.
That
       represents the tranquility of the islands. As you walk into the main
       dining room, you see a 80-foot tall Tiki head looking right straight
at
       you. It is very solemn. Then on the other side of the building, there
is
       rain forest, which from time to time there's thunders and lightning
and
       rain coming out. That represents the weather of the Polynesian.

       MONTAGNE: And then that's only, really, the beginning because you
       haven't even been served your smoking eruption yet.

       Mr. TSAO: We already overwhelmed the customer as they walk in. Then
you
       have to go through the whole experience of dining.

       (Soundbite of music)

       MONTAGNE: Michael Tsao owns the Kahiki Supper Club in Columbus, Ohio,
       which is closing this weekend.
